Subject: Re: An Essay on Forever Knight, Part 1 of 1

I've been thinking about the essay on Forever Knight. I think a large part
of the appeal the show has for me is its spiritual side. Nick is all of us
writ large. His struggle with the sins of his past is the struggle we all
have, religious or not, with regrets, things we'd like to go back and do
differently or better, people we wish we hadn't hurt, ways we wish we'd been
better friends and lovers. The vampire desire to drink blood, which keeps
dragging him down, is the same drive, in larger form, as whatever things
keep us from operating at our best.

Nick's inability to see that what he needs to do is paradoxically to let go
of the past, repent of it sincerely and just start from where he is now and
try to do better. But again, that's precisely what all of us need to do for
ourselves, all the time; let the past be, and try to do better in the
present, which is the only place we can actually change anything.

Nick's persistent mistakes are mistakes that we all make from time to time,
so they resonate with us. Plus, he's likable, he is capable of love, and
he's downright gorgeous - always a plus! But if he didn't have a heart we
wouldn't love him. He's the Tin Woodman, but more attractive - convinced he
has no heart, but if he were right, he wouldn't want one.

I run a list called FKFANSHUG on egroups and have e-mailed Shana explaining
some of the things FK fans will do for each other, and offer our assistance
to at least make sure the girls get a few goodies.

For those of you not familiar with FKFANSHUG, it is in a way a prayer request
list for fans of *all* faiths (Christian, Wiccan, etc) or *anyone* who may
just want to help out in situations like this but are not religious. I've
forwarded Shana's message already to that list. The list can be found on
egroups.

If anyone hears from Shana, be sure to let us know. Myself and McLisa have
both e-mailed her, and if we hear back, we'll let everyone in on any details.

I was thinking that too. It sounds like a good idea. I'm interested in
contributing. I don't have much, but every little bit helps. Even $10 each
would be quite a bit if we piled it all up. We just send it to their house
and everything. Their kids need food and a nice Christmas. Nick would agree
I'm sure. :)

Bonnie

Super story... I don't watch that show but the author will be on Bynon
tomorrow so I will be sure to watch the show.

As for me... just not writing... too much happening... but when I read about
people like K. C. Smith I realize how lucky I am. I feel for the poor
woman. Twenty one years ago I spent Christmas with my brother Doug as he
cried about his life and missing his sons and what was he to do. The next
year he committed suicide on December 1st. I do not want any one to go
through that. I would send cash if I had an address... even change it into
that horrible American green stuff to make it easier for the family. Let me
know if you hear anything so I can help. Maybe a gift certificate or a
hamper could be arranged. Also, the Salvation Army is there for anybody to
make sure the children have a Christmas.

Please let me know what is happening.

Lee

By the way, Merry Christmas.
Love you for all your sharing in the past year.

I've obviously missed a post in here. Could someone email me and let me know

Hey Lee,

I understand how you feel about KC Smith. Today happened to be the four year
anniversary of my cousin committing suicide, and it was haunting to read the
message from KC's sister. I had visited Joyce's grave, and I got home and found
that e-mail. I wish we didn't know what it was like to lose someone that way.

I'll find out from Libby if she hears anything back from KC's sister. If fans
can spend thousands on charity auctions, we should all be able to come together
and pool enough to keep the wolves at bay.

I do have KC's address, so there's always sending them a money order anonymously
if we don't hear from her sister.

{{{hugs}}}

Count me in on this too, if it can be organized. I've done enough asking for
money on this list (on behalf of KtK...watch for our announcement sometime
tomorrow) and I'd love the chance to give to help someone else.

Subject: Nick looks at other person when suspect emotes

Luc wrote to ask why Nick/Ger always looks at the other person he's with
when the suspect they're interrogating cries or starts to breakdown.

From a purely narrative point of view, I suppose Nick might do that in order
to pick up a klew as to how the other officer wanted to proceed with the
interrogation. From reading interviews of GWD, we know that he thinks reactions
to what other actors say or do are every bit as important as the lines an actor
actually has to speak. He has said that one of the problems inherent in
filming live theater is the difficulty of capturing all the reactions on film.
So, as an actor who believes reactions are of supreme importance and as an
actor who greatly appreciates the collaborative nature of his profession, GWD might
instinctively look to see what sort of reaction his fellow actor was registering
to the suspect's breakdown. On the other hand, maybe those looks were either
1) written into the scripts or 2) mandated by the director(s). <g>
