Lets see if I remember my Journalism Law class correctly:

Falwell is probably enough of a public figure that the authors could get away
with it.
Libel recognizes three types of status: Private figure, Public figure and
Limited Public Figure.
The classification that a person fits helps determine the degree of libel that
applies.

A private figure is someone who is not in the public eye, like most of us.
Janette, Vachon and Screed are private figures. Someone who is just not famous,
or someone who has no attention drawn to them for any reason.
If someone were to write a story giving negative facts about one of us, without
our permission, then it would most likely leave them open to a higher degree of
libel.

A limited public figure is someone who has been pushed into the public eye for a
limited reason. Once that reason has been resolved, chances are that they'll
revert to being a private figure. One example of limited public figures would
be Either Nick Schanke or Nat.

For the duration of a crime, Nick could be considered a limited public figure.
Particularly a high-profile case in which he is in the spotlight.

However once that case is over, his fame ends, and he goes back to being a
Private figure.

Libel against a limited public figure occurs when you make statements that
pertain to their personal lives (that part of their lives that hasn't put them
into the public spotlight.).

The final category, Public figures are basically people who are famous, like
President Clinton, Howard Stern, Or Tom Cruse. The Nightcrawler would be a
Public Figure.

It's hard to prove libel on a public figure. They are celebrities, and all
parts of their lives are under scrutiny. That's why tabloids are able to go
after celebs (that and it dosen't matter if a tabloid loses a $20 million dollar
lawsuit when they make $80 million per issue).

Libel has a narrow definition. It has to be:
1. Statements of fact. (opinions aren't as damaging)
2. personally damaging.

The burden of proof falls on the plaintiff.

Say that Nick told local reporters that local radio broadcaster Lucien Lacroix
had garlic breath. This wouldn't necessicarily be libelous, because it's his
opinion. Now if Nick said that Lacroix was a crook who was bilking honest
citizens out of millions of dollars in a make money quick e-mail scam, then that
would be libelous.

If LaCroix decided to Take Nick to court (instead of beating the crap out of him
like he normally does) then LaCroix would probably try to show that he's not a
public figure (so that a higher degree of libel is involved in the statments
that Nick made), that Nick made a statement of fact (basically that he lied
rather than just giving his opinion) and that Nick's lie was personally damaging
to LaCroix.

That's what I was thinking, but anyone who'd dare to parody Lacroix, or even
come close to it, would not have to worry about being sued for libel, they'd
have to worry about becoming lunch.

I know this isn't much help, but I know there's something called "Babelfish"
on AltaVista somewhere that can translate whole sentences at a time, into
any language. I wish I could give you the actual address, but I seem to
have misplaced it.

Hope I helped at least a little!

Subject: FK trivia file uploaded to egroups

I've just finished watching all my FK tapes. This time, though, I took
notes! As a result, I've created the file FKCHARS.TXT (Ligeia's Forever
Knight Character Profiles and Assorted FK Trivia) on egroups. The aim is to
help fanfic writers by having a place they can find this information
easily. The main sections are:

--Major & recurring characters: actor's name, character's biography, likes,
dislikes, family members, & blood type.
--MFON (Mortal Friends of Nick) (and a couple of Janette's, too): Over the
centuries, some people have learned Nick's deep, dark secret and survived.
This is a list of who they are, and what we know about them.
--Cops: Why invent a new cop when there are so many already out there? Also
includes a list of Toronto precincts and police stations mentioned in the
series.
--Forensics & Coroners' Office: A very short list of the characters working
in these areas.
--Misc.: Other interesting character(s) that don't fall into any of the
above categories.
--Toronto Institutions (Mostly Fictional): A list of Toronto businesses,
hospitals, & entertainers mentioned in the series.
--Odds & Ends: A very eclectic mix of trivial stuff; dialog, myths, how-
to's, etc.
Coming: Vampire family trees.

To acess the file, go to www.egroups.com and subscribe to forkni-l, which
is the egroups version of this list, created by Carla Martinek to hold that
list name at egroups in case this list needs to change servers one day.
Once you've joined forkni-l on egroups, go to forkni-l, click on 'files',
and then click on the filename fkchars.txt. If there are any problems with
reading the file, or folks have corrections, additions, or clarifications,
please drop me a line.

I hope people find this file useful, and I hope that other folks will take
advantage of this egroups feature by posting their own files.

Your humble & obedient servant,
Ligeia

I have that one bookmarked, and I've used it before, but unfortunately it's
one of the ones I mentioned that seems to offer only modern languages, no
Latin. :( Thanks for trying though. :)

While strolling through some mystic sites, I ran across one dedicated to
Vampire Femmes and guess who held # 6 in the top 10? Janette. The
descriptions of both the character and the actress were quite
flattering, and there are some nice photos.

Hi all

This message is in response to Kylie's question - although this is my
second posting and I haven's seen my first hit the web, so my response may
be irrelevant.

Geraint Wyn Davies played Immortal Michael Moore. This was the third
episode in the second (I believe) season. Episode 25. This occurred in 1993.

If you have any further need of information I might be able to assist.

Alternate personality was Quenten Banrnes.

Hey, Lauren, your poll server needs a talking to! I was quite surprised
to see Nat not listed on this one; then even more surprised when I typed
her in and the thing told me it couldn't add that choice because it was
already listed, but it would add another tick to her total. Then I
reloaded the page and it *still* didn't show her!

Has LC got his fingers in the free-content pie now too? That's playing
dirty, even for a master cheater like our dear Uncle! ;-)
