Well, we know he started as a police officer during Lyndon Johnson's administration, so that could have been as early as November 1963. We know he was still with the police during the 1968 presidential campaign. And we can assume he was also in Chicago as late as 1986 or 1987 or his joke to Janette about the lights in Wrigley Field wouldn't make sense. We also know that he couldn't have stayed with the Chicago police for that entire time (the never-aging problem). And he was at Woodstock (with the Grateful Dead). Otherwise, I think the '70s and 80's are pretty much wide open to fan-fic speculation. Maybe he left the windy city for a decade and came back. Even so, I would think he would have had to keep a pretty low profile so as not to be recognized -- unless.... Here's a theory. We know Nick was at Woodstock. A beard would have helped him to pass for under-30 with that crowd. Maybe after '69 he went, if not for the full-fledged hippy, at least for the hairy-professor look, and that made it possible for him to stay in Chicago....... ----- Mary mcombs@e....... I'm on digest, so I hope I'm not being redundant here. <g> We know from the flashbacks in both Amateur Night and Beyond the Law that Nick was in Chicago during the 1960s. I would guess, since he has to move on before people notice he isn't aging, that he probably wouldn't have stayed much past the mid-70s, at the most. During that time, he was in East Germany (1966), so he either left his life in Chicago for awhile, then came back, or he took a vacation. <g> Nick does seem to have a fondness for that city, since he had also been an archeology professor at the university in the 1950s. Never could figure out why he thought it was safe to return so soon, especially considering his notoriety in the Spin Doctor flashback. Tsk, tsk. Wasn't he also in Chicago in the '50's, during the McCarthy years, as an associate professor of archaeology? And then in Close Call, Schanke found his driver's license for when he was living in Grennwich Village, NYC, but I don't remember when that was. Ah yes, now there's a very good possibility for where he was in the early 70's. Do we think Nick left Vietnam after the events we saw, or do we think he stayed... perhaps until the fall of Saigon? From: http://www.uwyo.edu/ahc/exhibits/veterans/vietnam.htm ***************************************************** The United States had been involved in the war between North and South Vietnam since 1956 but not until the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident was full military intervention authorized by Congress. Escalation of U.S. forces was rapid in order to defend South Vietnam and retain United States credibility with allied nations in fighting Communist aggression. After years of bloody conflict with no end in sight, domestic support for the war effort dwindled. In 1969 President Nixon ordered the first withdrawal of U.S. forces, but not until 1973 did the last combat troops leave South Vietnam, which soon fell to the North. ******************************************************* So, Nick *could* have been in Vietnam in combat situations as early as 1956; chances are more likely he was there somewhere between 1964 and 1973. (Some sources say we still had troops in there after 1974, but that's another story.) Using the referenced "Nick as Chicago Cop" scend with a classic Mustang visible, I would guess Nick to have been a cop in Chicago somewhere between1964 and 1968-69 (and the infamous Chicago Democratic Nat'l Convention - now *that* would be an interesting fanfic idea...). Sometime soon after that, he would have moved onto Vietnam, being there betw. '69 and '74. THEN AGAIN, Nick might have been in Vietnam with French or other forces that were there many years prior to U.S. involvement. That could *really* throw a timeline off! (I'd rather Vachon was >singing to her than Sydney). ...Ahem....not necessarily "fun" for all of us... #1--I am a devoted VAQUERA, yet I feel I must remind ya'll that there IS another lady that our Totally AWESOME Guitar-playing Vampire could sing that song to, a beautiful, sensitive, gentle vampiress that Javier Vachon HIMSELF chose to bring into HIS un-life and had been with for about a century and STILL obviously has deep and sincere feelings and concern for: URS !!! And, if ya think about it, {although I vaguely recall the lyrics :) }MAYBE it would be MORE appropriate for Javier to sing it to Urs, as they've most likely been thru a LOT together but, also since there may have been times in their life together where maybe he, like Peter Criss, spent time away from her that he'd have preferred to share with her. #2--While Sidney Lambert [Nat's cat] is the only cat that we saw on the FK television series, I understand that in FK War #10, Javier Vachon DID have a pet cat, Carmencita (right,War 10 VaqVetrans?). So, that may be something a fanfic written may want to consider and even maybe in a future FK War [[[McLisa's RL time permitting :) ]]] the devoted Vaqueros/vaqueras may also consider including The AWESOME Javier singing to his own cat! *BVaqG* ...Tim said he'd rather Vachon was singing to Tracy than Sidney... no offense intended to anyone who holds a different opinion, but I'd rather him sing to Carmencita, Urs, or even to his devoted Vaqueras! :) ...Ya'll are aware [I hope] that NOT all Vaqs favor T & V fiction... We do know that Vachon was The Perky One's friend and protector on the series... I personally prefer the "Raven's Cellar" fiction-- VERY interesting stories which are about a romantic relationship between Tracy and Miklos-- and CERK Perk fiction-- stories about a romantic relationship between Tracy and LaCroix. TRACY AND MIKLOS??? Yep!!! Actually, it's a pretty 'believable' combination-- and, I highly recommend that at the "Raven's Cellar" site, ya'll check out Cousin Mary's 3 stories in her "Beauty" series {{{I THINK that's what it's entitled}}}-- from reading those great stories, you may come to think, as I have, how a lovely, caring, and romantic relationship could come about between Miklos and Tracy... in this series, it kinda develops almost like a RL relationship possibly COULD and would develop between a man and a woman...{{{Cousin Mary, PLEASE, when RL permits, PLEASE WRITE MORE stories for this wonderful series; I enjoyed reading it and would like to read a LOT more of them!!! Thanks! :) }}} There are also some absolutely WONDERFUL stories about Tracy with Screed... and {of course} Screed IS a PERFECT gentleman in the 2 I'm thinking of: "Viva Las Vegas" by Cousin Mary and "Burning the Stubble" by Spike Shovelton (sp?) LC as a mean stepfather I can agree with... but the beautiful Janette, who has loved Nick for over 7oo years and that Nick brought back into vamp-dom because he could not bare to let her die-- she as a wicked step-sister...?! While Nat is supportive of Nick in some ways, she does not always accept him and what he has to do to survive and apparently has no conception of the how Nick being a vampire/using his vampire abilities helps people and the sacrifices he makes and difficulties he deals with in trying to live among mortals and control his vampire tendencies -- even in IWR when Nat begs Nick to 'save' her dying brother by making him a vampire, nat says thet Nick DOESN'T really need the blood! Janette, whereas she for seasonns #1 & #2, she does not approve of his desire to be mortal, can understand Nick --the vampire, the man, and the person, and as a vampire; she can know how difficult his struggle is to control his vampire tendencies when nightly being in close contact with mortals; she may not agree with Nick, but she does accept him for all that he is and after 7 centuries she still loves and trusts him! Janette HAS been there when he needed her and even rescued him in 'Cherry Blossoms' and in AFWTD and HF we saw, IMHO, true, substantial aspects of the real Janette-- and in HF a sensitive, protective, loving, and humble Janette-- she is a strong woman of deep feelings, and if ya think 'bout it... remembering her life (in AFWTD) before LC brought her across, maybe "Cinderella" would be more likely Janette's story... while LC may not be exactly the good fairy godmother type :), he did offer her an alternative to the horrible life she was forced into living, and she had been 'of noble blood' and maybe living a materially 'good life'--here like Cinderella?-- before being degraded by the husband who should have protected and cherished her the most (she says in AFWTD about, in her time, a woman belonging to her father and to her husband, and what her fate was if she failed to 'produce a male heir') Seems that LC in some important ways rescued her and and Nick could even be Janette's Prince Charming... And even considering HF, when Nick made her a vampire again, that's another way the Our Handsome Prince rescues his beloved Beautiful Princess!!! And away they ride, into the moon-lit night in The Handsome Prince's Awesome green caddy convertible, driven by Screed {{{well, Cindy's pumpkin/carriage, had been pulled by mice or rats turned into horses, so who better to have as a chauffeur in a Cinderella re-make?! *RPg*}}} as they listen to their fairy godfather on the radio who made it all possible in the first place!!! She's under their control in any future wars the list may have. For non-war fic, I figure people will check with me before writing her in anywhere. After seeing Vachon pet one of the rats at Screed's place in 'Black Buddha, I decided he could use an animal companion. Considering that cats blink as a sign of affection, and mine often whammy me into giving them treats and catnip, a feline seemed more appropriate than, say, a chinchilla. As the story goes, Vachon named the cat after his mother. In appearance, I based her after one of my oldest cat, so her picture's up on my fanfic site.
