Subject: Questions for Can. trip

Hi-
My friend and I are going to Canada the weekend of June 16-19, and we are
going to be in TO on that saturday. I have 2 questions:
First I had thought that the Metro Police gift shop was open on saturdays.
It isn't! (but I swear it used to be) I had been hoping to get some stuff.
I checked out their website and when I click on 'store' it puts me to the
museum. Does anyone know if there is a number I can call for a catalog or
something? I have their address and I was planning to write.
Second, it is still up in the air what we are doing in TO, but just for my
information, I am wondering if anyone still gives tours of the shooting
sites. If so, what is the procedure? (ie, payment, how soon do I have to
let someone know, etc)
Thanks!

Calgary's police service, one of the largest in Canada, does not require a
degree, but they certainly would like to see one. They have a really nice
website, with lots of info for prospective members of the police force,
(including rank & salary for various grades of constable) at:
www.gov.calgary.ab.ca/police/jobs/requirements.html

If this was supposed to be in Orlando with Pat (P.N.) Elrod as another guest,
along with Susan Garrett... then Nigel didn't show due to a late job offer. I
know this because I went to see him and didn't learn he wasn't going to be
there until I got there. ::grumble:: At least it was only a three hour
drive so I wasn't out plane fare.

Since I got so many wonderful, but different answers.... I went to the
Toronto Police Department page for the answer.

I do know Nick would fabricate whatever documentation he needed, but he'd
need to know what that was.

<<have successfully completed at least four years of secondary school
education or its equivalent. (Note: official transcripts and diplomas will be
required). Where education has been completed outside Ontario, official proof
of equivalency must be obtained by contacting the Ontario Ministry of
Education and Training.>>

I'm assuming secondary school = college/university? This means that Schanke,
Nick, Tracy, and any other cops we saw have at least a Bachelor's Degree.
They always portrayed Schanke as a guy who got the job right out of High
School. Although, sometimes it did seem like he did have a higher education.

I think secondary in this instance would mean the old time High School prior to
Jr. High's, Middle Schools, and Grade Schools.

Primary was grades 1-8
Secondary grades 9-12

But I may be wrong

No, secondary school would be college or university, or possibly a relevant
community college program. I believe that Ontario schools have run with a
high school program that goes to Grade 13 for more than 25 years, with Grade
13 being the approximate equivalent of the first year of a general Liberal
Arts Degree program. This may have changed in the last few years, but I
have had friends and acquaintances attending school in Ontario since the
1970s.

"Four years of Secondary school" would normally mean an Undergraduate
(Bachelor's) Degree. I would imagine that most police forces would expect
all detectives to have at least an undergraduate degree.

On the other hand, a veteran member of a force who may have entered with
completion of High School would not necessarily be kicked out if the
requirements changed, but they very well might be expected to be working on
a suitable degree on their own time. (I knew several people doing just that
when I was attending university in the late 1980s.)

I think the trend has been around for many years. Very often when a show,
whether network or syndicated, stars losing market share, there are cast
changes - often to "reach a younger audience". I think that both economy
and lack of other alternatives make these decisions inevitable. I don't
think there are a lot of other possibilities to try - as much as I wish
there were.

That's why I have so much respect for the FK cast who was willing to fight
to get the show back to its original standards after the unfortunate (not
for the new cast, but the bad plots) digression the 3rd season took.

Nigel Bennett said as much at LCA2. The producers and writiers seem to
change things after the third season as they think they've got it made. Then
the show looses it's direction and is then cancelled.
It does seem to be that way doesn't it. FK was great the way it was the
first two seasons. I must admit, Tacey and Vachon did add to the show.

Secondary school in Ontario does refer to grades 9-12. OAC (grade 13) is
also part of high school/secondary school, but is only required for those
students who plan on attending university and is due to be eliminated in
three years (which means my brother will do one year less of high school
than I did). Universities/colleges are called postsecondary institutions. So
according to the Toronto Police Service web site, Nick would not need a
university degree to work as a police officer in Toronto. I think it's
likely that he would claim to have one anyway, however, given his apparent
age and obvious erudition. The closest I can recall to canon on the matter
is Schanke's conversation with Janette in PoTM when he guesses that Nick and
Janette met in college. That could be taken to indicate that Nick's record
states he attended university, or could simply have been an assumption on
Schanke's part.
