Well, actually, I wrote that, but Melissa's got you Tim---it would be a

Recently when I was re-watching "I Will Repay," something Natalie said to
Nick suddenly seemed strange to me. She said that if the reason he would not
bring her brother Richard across was that his unlife was so horrible, then
why doesn't he just walk into the sun? In other words she said to him, then
why don't you just do away with yourself? Vampire suicide. I began to
think of all the other vampire suicides in the series, and came to a
surprising conclusion. Female vampires tend to kill themselves by going
into the sunlight, while male vampires tend to be more violent about the
taking of their own lives.

The female vampire Erica, took her life by allowing the sun to destroy her
on the park bench. Vachon's Master also flew into the sun to kill herself,
while Vachon chose to run into a wooden stake. Nicholas chooses to die via
the stake as well, and even the Inca's self destruction(although it was for
good) was an explosion. Is there sexism when it comes to vampire suicides?
Are male vampires more violent about the way they choose to die? Just
wondering what you all thought.

Ahh, but the Inca didn't really commit suicide. He was smart enough to
throw the bomb before it exploded! No cheese needed here, we never SAW
him killed, just the explosion. ;)

Which brings up another of those Famous Forever Knight Inconsistencies: Why
WAS there an explosion when the Inca was only carrying the detonator?
Remember, Screed had the bag full of bombs. The Inca only had the
gift-wrapped music box.

As far as suicides go, though, I don't think its an issue of sexism so much
as it's just a violent business overall to dispatch of a vampire. If you're
a vampire, and you want to end it all, you have only a very few choices,
and none of them is exactly pleasant. Erica certainly didn't LOOK peaceful
as she was becoming a living tiki-torch. Tran, a male, chose to die in the
sun, but he didn't seem to be enjoying it either. I believe Vachon likely
would have chosen the sun--as did his master--but he was in a pretty
desperate situation, and the stake was handy. (Of course, we all know his
aim was off and the stake didn't really kill him, right?) Nick is a
masochist, so he doesn't count. ;-) And remember, HIS first suicide choice
was the Brain-Sucking Machine (TM) that sent him back to the beach in his
nightie. Not smart, certainly, but not violent.

Back to lurking (and to mutting unkind things under my breath about LK and
suicide and TPTB...)

I don't think is sexism as much as just following male/female lines. It's
been a long time since I read it, but I remember a study that showed that
men in general tended to kill themselves violently, gunshots or hanging,
while women preferred more 'passive' methods like poison or slitting wrists.

That's one thing I like about FK vamps. They're human, only more so. It's
like looking at a fun-house mirror. You're there, but warped and all out of
proportion.

Actually, IMHO, it is just a reflection on how males and females choose
to commit suicide in general. Women tend to take less violent ways out.
The majority of women that commit suicide usually do so by an overdose of
some sort. Whereas men are more likely to shoot themselves in the head.
(I know, really morbid, but I've tried it enough times myself, I actually
began studying up on the subject.)

Well, the vampires are only mirroring humanity. Statistically men who commit
suicide tend to use more violent, final means: eating a bullet. Women tend
to use more passive means of suicide that also leave a chance for being found
and saved: pills or slit wrist. It's not absolute, there are always
exceptions, but there is a gender prevalence for one method or another.

And even if The Inka *was* blown up, since when did that kill a vampire on the
show?
Nick catches a hand grenade, by the time he reaches the morgue, he
looks like he cut himself shaving. Vachon's plane ka-booms, and all he loses

Another way of looking at it which concerns only vampires, without
reflecting on men ..... If they choose to die by stake, it involves someone
else. Maybe they didn't feel they could do it on their own and needed
someone on the other end of the stake to take the matter out of their hands?

Urs did that too as a mortal. Anyone has the ability to end it for
themselves if they truly want to, but she asked Vachon to kill her.

Heh heh.....but then if Vachon were standing in front of me, *I* might just
suddenly discover suicidal tendencies too! Vachon? C'mere..... ;o)

Actually, it too was a bomb, though a different type than the others
(better to blow Tracy up with ;-) Anyway, I did that rewrite of BB (with
the plane no goin' boom) and BOY HOWDY! are there problems with the
bombs! Remember Screed, Nick and the Inca collecting all the bombs?
While going through the script (with a fine nit picky comb) I noticed...
hey, wait a sec... they don't take the bombs anywhere to get them
disarmed! Infact, Nick leaves all the bombs with Screed when he flies
off to save the day... better hope Screedykins knows to cut the blue
wire! We also have to assume that they found -all- forty bombs and
managed to disarm them all in time...

Meanwhile, the gift that keeps on giving in the music box was seperate
from the other 40 bombs. "There's no way to disarm this one. There's a
range of ten miles. A five-minute mainspring." So that one -had- to go
boom. Of course, we all know the Inca was bright enough to toss it at
the last minute. Come on, Vachon would have either been upset or
thrilled (depending on how he -really- felt about his bro) if he'd really
been rid of him forever, instead, he seemed more interested in fakin' the
whammyin' o' Nick and carrying on the seduction of the lovely and ever
talented Tracy Vetter.

Not me. I bet LC would be rather distainful at such a work. They'd get all
the details wrong, it would be overly dramatic, and they'd miss the point
completely. <g>

But then, I also think Nick would avoid Phantom of the Opera. I want to

Just a reminder: when replying to the list, but you're talking about
something that isn't the same subject as the message to which you're
replying, please change the subject line. Many listers have mailers that can
sort mail by subject. Sometimes others are watching for particular subjects.
So it's necessary to have the subject line match the mail.

Thanks!

Anyway he wants it treated. <g>

That's a good point.

OK - a question for all you lucky Toronto residents: For a fanfic, I need to
know the name of the main airport and whether it's near the city center
(like a short bus ride) or waaay out in the suburbs. Also, are there direct
flights from London Heathrow?

**OFF-LIST** please! <waves at McLisa>

That would be "points," Nancy, dear! The plural would be correct in this
instance.

Subject: Capitalization in LC's name

The early publicity material had "LaCroix." The scripts tend to have
"Lacroix," probably because it's easier to type.

I use "LaCroix" from force of habit. I'm not sure there is an official
spelling.

Anybody who wrote one of the books or had the material they gave out got any
definitive version?

H'mm, it probably depends on whether the bomb (a) blew his head off his
shoulders and/or (b) set fire to him as it blew him up. Any soap writer can
come up with ways to revive a supposedly dead character no matter what was
done to kill him/her off. I'm sure we can do it for the Inca, and throw in a
special on The Cheese of the Week at the same time. :)

IIRC, at Syndicon, Nigel said it was a lower-case "c".
