I hate to be a downer and I've talked to John about this privately already, but this type of hit them in one day idea DOES NOT WORK! TPTB assume, rightly so, that there is one small group (yes, SMALL GROUP) who decided to spam them. They will very likely ignore the whole thing -- discard the letters -- not count them as valid consumer interest in the show. This type of spamming leads to the belief that TPTB are dealing with a fanatic fringe group rather then the typical consumer. We want them to believe we are a cross-section of the entire viewing audience, not some small fringe group with specialty interests. >> 5) Letter writing campaigns can be very effective, especially >>when an unsuspecting receiver of said mail gets BAGS of mail all >>at once, or whose mail room blows a gasket, fax machines run out >>of paper... A sustained influx of mail over the course of weeks and months is MUCH MORE effective then one explosion. Besides that, wasting people's fax paper is more likely to cause them to get annoyed with the group doing it than to look on their crusade with a positive eye. How long do you think it's going to take for their fax machine to run out of paper? How long before the person that hands out the faxes realizes that they are all about the same thing and decides to throw them away? The one thing we don't want to do is annoy people that we are trying to get to come over to our view of things and do something for us. >> US Independence day is close (July 4). Could we organize the >>first LETTER BLITZ by then? (Or on some other relevant date, from >>Canada, perhaps?) This is just my humble opinion, but I can't stress enough, feel free to write letters, write them once a week, every day, once a month, whatever, but don't blitz anyone. Well maybe we should pick 26 totally huge targets, starting with the week of the 4th of July, we all write the first target. Then the next week we all write the next target, and everyone whose last name starts with *A* writes the first target too. And we do it for 26 weeks, every week, Bumping up the letter of the last name so that we travel thru the alphabet and keep a steady stream of letters going. That way we maybe write two letters a week each. Not only arewe hitting a major target big time on a weekly basis but we are also reinforcing it with backup letters. I'm sure we can work something like that out. You can't avoid war posts on this list (FORKNI-L) because it isn't set to screen them out. To avoid War posts on the fic list, send a message to listserv@p....... (I'm assuming you're already subscribed to fkfic-l) Leave the subject line blank. In the body of the text, put ONLY the things between the <> below. Not the <>, no sig file, nothing else. <set fkfic-l topics -War> Then wait. In a minute (five, tops) you'll get a reply back that shows your listserv options. If it *doesn't* say, besides a bunch of other stuff, "The topics you subscribe to are: War," you've done it right. For those of you that want the War but not the other fic (though I honestly can't imagine why you would) I'm guessing you can say <set fkfic-l topics -Xover, -Adult, -Other> and only get War posts, but I could be wrong. There was a time during the last campaign when the letteres to TriStar were being forwarded to the FK office instead. I'm not sure how this happened since we are not supposed to put anything about FK on the envelope, but that was what we heard. Even though viewer organizations like ours are made up of "Joe Q Public", TPTB don't look at it that way. The letters that stream in individually are much more powerful than an onslaught and I think they'd notice that they were getting letters from people with just "A's" and they would start to toss them in the circular file. People should just concentrate on writing. Everyone should. And the flyers have to be gotten back out there to the campuses and the comic book and speciality shops etc. If everyone were writing, then we wouldn't need to organize anyone. High rated programs live and low rated programs go away." the VP at Sci-fi channel was quoted. This is the biggest crock of shinola. EVERYONE in the business says this and it usually true. But the history of TV is littered with shows that had decent numbers and still got cancelled. There were high rated shows that got deliberately canned, Murder She Wrote for example, by moving it to another slot. Or in the case of Due South, moved and preempted constantly. The list goes on. If a network wants a show killed, for whatever reason, (someone at NBC didn't like Quantum Leap) they know how to use and manipulate the ratings system to do so. There is also a policy when a new head of entertainment takes over a network, he is inclined to disregard and even cancel the shows of his predecessor. As someon once said, the industry is half ego half money . The " poor ratings" is a convienant excuse. Remember, these are the same people who think sweeps period ratings are accurate and work. (2) The Topics available on FKFIC-L are: WAR, XOVER, ADULT ; the Default topics are: ALL, -ADULT. (3) If you are on DIGEST, you get ALL the topics, there is NO WAY to filter certain topicss from a digest. Send a message to "LISTSERV@p......." OK guys, I see this and wholeheartedly agree. Diane, Lisa, etc. are all correct. Last thing we need is to be perceived as more "fringe" than we already are (percieved that is). We talk about the successes of the ST folks. But on the other hand, how long did it take them to get over being referred to as crazed "Trekkies"??? They even had to reinvent their fan image (trekkers, etc.)! No, I was not suggesting we blast any of the people to whom we are writing, asking, pleading our case (a/k/a the Powers That Be). Perhaps I wasn't clear, (that's ENTIRELY POSSIBLE). <wink> My response to John Folden's comment about writing or getting a write-up in TV guide had to do with letter writing either through a gimic or on a targeted topic.. (with due consideration for a postive/effective-ONLY result) to other publications which have NO IDEA what's been going on. The tabloids, the sports mags, scientific mags, I dunno, ANYTHING outside our baliwick. --Would college writing programs be interested to hear about the birth of a writer's group from an internet list which (at the drop of a hat!) wrote: --"If Other Authors Wrote FK..." --Top 100 things LC would never do/say --Top 10 things Natalie would never say --Top 10 thinks to know if you're dating a vampire (my personal fav!) etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, I have been constantly AMAZED in the past month as to how much creative spontaneous writing, challenges, fiction writing, poetry, songs, and critical discussion have crossed my path. My old english teachers would drop dead (if not already) to see me actually applying critical thought for fun! on my own time! (If I ever saw another final exam starting with "compare & contrast"..., I would scream. And now, the last laugh's on me, cause I'm doing it in my spare time! How about a college (writing) course using FK themes,. discussions, etc. Any college attendee out there who HASn't seen wackier course offerings? IT COULD HAPPEN!!! (er, um, pardon me. Had the rose-colored, big ideas, "What If", glasses on again. Just happy feet on the brain. It's what this show and all of you do to me, I guess.) Anyway, I was asking about getting publications' attention (NICELY, though) & get THEM asking TPTB... "What's All The Bru-haha?" I'm not talking about being crazy or thoughtless here. I AM talking about using all the other avenues of communication to get more & more talking about FK. Here's a personal example: I hate it when The Washington Post prints beach station schedules (for beach towns 100 miles away), but not programming notes after Midnight on Saturday's Channel 45 listing!) I bet folks wrote in asking for it & now they've got a TV guide to take with them to the beach. What I was thinking of is tieing a response/focusing an inquiry to an event or specific request. eg: What if all Baltimore/DC/ Northern Va (DC metro area) FK fans wrote to The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, the various Journal Papers (etc) all asking to have the weekly blurb for FK written up with the other show's blurbs. I know The Washington Post lists it for Thursday Mid-Channel 50, and Monday/8pm for SciFi, but not for Saturday/Mid-Channel 45. Some don't get cable & *cannot* get Channel 50. What about all those who get Channel 45, but never know they can see FK on Sats? I'd be willing to write to The Washington Post to ask them to at least include a blurb in the Saturday listings (elongating the block schedule on a fixed size page of paper is NOT feasible) to LET BALTIMORE KNOW they can watch Channel45 for Forever Knight! AND, cc: a copy of the letter to the correct person at Channel 45. Do the same for the other local papers if the situation applies. * * * * * I don't have the best ideas for this. I was thinking along adjacent lines. Sometimes the best way to get the primary target's attention, one can get a secondary's attention well enough to get noticed indirectly, and produce yet another voice asking "How about..?". Perhaps, this is a bad idea. However, you must admit this "WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN" discussion has gotten newer people willing to volunteer where they didn't think they might be effective before AND we've gotten more word from those who came before us about what all that's already been done, so that we DON't trip ourselves up or throw a wrench into the long-term efforts. So, that we CAN learn from them & coordinate all our engergies. The folks mentioned above are Exactly Right! If we bomb someone's mailroom, they will NOT think kindly of us.
