Subject: FOREVER KNIGHT Compendium

The following was passed to me by my friend Jeff last night (he publishes
a fanzine called "1701", and another this summer called "MapleStar".). It
was sent to him by James Van Hise, the author of the FK Compendium (via
snail-mail hard-copy.)

This is by no means an endorsement, I just thought you might be
interested in the info.

-------------------------------
THE FOREVER KNIGHT COMPANION

This is being done for Belfry Books, whose publisher is Sharon Jarvis. My
deadline is June so it would be best if I have all material in by late
May.

I have enclosed the planned outline for the book, and at this time all
sections are open for contributions. Please contact me regarding what you
plan to do.

I use a Mac computer but I can accept PC disks if they are 3.5" disks as I
have a translation program to turn PC files into Mac.

Anyways, here's his outline:
------------------

SECTION ONE: THE CHARACTERS
Profiles of Nick Knight and the various supporting characters who have
come and gone.

SECTION TWO: THE ACTORS
Profile of the star and of the supporting actors who have appeared on the
series (Fans don't like female partner) [ed. note -his words not mine]

SECTION THREE: THE PILOT
The original TV movie which starred Rick Springfield. Behind the scenes
information and a brief plot synopsis.

SECTION FOUR: THE ORIGIN OF NICK KNIGHT
How did he become a vampire and what makes the character different from
other vampires in film and popular literature [ed. note - I'm guessing you
can include Dark Shadows and The Kindred in here, but don't take that as
gospel]. Includes an interview with the star commenting on his own
character.

SECTION FIVE: BEHIND-THE-SCENES
How an episode of the series is written, how much the script changes
before it is filmed and what is filming the series like. Includes
interviews with production personel such as producers, directors and
writers.

SECTION SIX: EPISODE GUIDE
Complete episode guide listing from each season of the series including
guest stars, creative credits, and synopsis of each episode [ed. note - I
think he means something like the Star Trek: The Next Generation
Companions books].

SECTION SEVEN: THE FANS IN THE DARKNESS
FOREVER KNIGHT Conventions, fanzines, etc. Reports, profiles, lists.

---------------------------------------------------

So, mull it over, discuss if its something you want to involve yourself
in.

If I've over-stepped my bounds, I apologise.

It looks like it might be a decent something-to-do this weekend, but there

It was Semtex. A, it was mentioned in BB. B, while any plastic explosive
is hard to get without an explosives license and a ton of other paperwork,
C-4 is checked by the ounce and kept under highest protection. To get the
stuff Vudu would have had to go through military channels (or, more likely,
be a military explosives expert), not a mining company. The day C-4 is used
in mining is the day I'm heading for the moon, rocket or not. I don't want
to see the results of a gram too much used.

I don't remember specifically what kind of explosives were used (at this
point I think it was Semtex), but given the fact that the bomb was given
to an unwitting accomplice (the female pilot), in all probability the
the bomb avoided the standard checkpoints at the airport. Someone here
can probably correct me, but pilots and stewardesses are normally
waved through security.

BTW, ABC did a report on airport security and in the US and found how
horrible they are in bomb detection. The x-ray station attendants are trained
to look for the stereo-typical bomb with sticks of dynamite with coils of
wire running to a alarm clock. <I am not joking.> They are not trained to
recognize consealed bombs made with plastic explosives.

He'd taken Schanke and Cohen hostage in the rear of the plane and
was planning to use them for lunch. When the plane crashed both Schanke and
Cohen were driven to feed off the non-baked victims and were brought
accross. Schanke assumed the role of Master Vampire because he spent 3 years
with a partner who was a vamp. Both of the fledglings are living nice quiet
lives on a tiny island between Buffalo, NY. and Niagra Falls. <doesn't

Vachon didn't reattach the hand, he just didn't want anyone claiming
his body parts for souveniers. He had it bronzed and has it on a shelf in
the church. His hand grew back spontaniously sometime between the commercial
break and Tracy's FIRST kidnappind.

Really easy -- PLOT DEVICE ! Tracy needed the night off to go find

Well, according to Tracy (by way of Vachon) the box containing the music box
was never checked by security, so I always assumed that's where the bomb was.
As for the blast radius, I figure, the cockpit is where all the electical
"buttons, switches, and knobs" are, so if an electrical fire started in the
cockpit which spread to the fuel tanks....well, there you are.

Don Durham replied:

That just will not work. Yes, a small bomb will take out the cockpit and
controlls. Easy. However, the same small charge is not going to start an
electrical fire of the magnitude that will travel from the cockpit all the way
to the fuel tanks (in the wings) in the time it took for the plane to hit the
ground. Unless the charge was massive, there are going to be a myriad of
automatic fire suppressant systems taking effect as soon as the fire started.

I vote for semtex in the hold, with a trigger in the music box. That way
Voodoo can get his thrills by knowing that his victim feels the terror, and
get the massive explosion that we saw in BB at the same time.

I know that I am expecting consistiency and logic from the show that cannot
maintain any other level of consistiency or logic, but call it a character
flaw.

And I think that we will never figure this one out... the way the episode
is set up, it is difficult to tell. IMHO, (unless you subscribe to "Nick
was having a nightmare" theory), he brought her across, but I ***only***
think that because I can't imagine Nick of 1912 killing her even if she
asked him to (and I'd love to see Claire again, for having 5 minutes of

Now there's the nugget! In LYTD, Nick declared that he stopped killing
after the incident with the dancer, which was before 1912. Of course, we
now know that he has killed since, as a cop, as a soldier, perhaps even
by accident. Why do I think Nick of 1912 killed her? How would Nick have
rationalized it to himself, such that he could believe this kill didn't
"count"? Because she was certain to die anyway. She had no intention of
getting into a lifeboat, even if the opportunity presented itself. IMHO.

Sure, Brandy! Are you volunteering your house for this? <BG>

Truly, without any spoilers, I think that such "support groups" for the
last (only for now, let's hope!) episode is a terrific idea! Listfolks
and off-line fen alike should all get together all over the country to,
well, *support* each other in their time of grief. And I'm only half
joking about the "time of grief" stuff, because many (me included) have a
lot emotion wrapped up in this series.

Of course,
I won't be able to take advantage of support groups since I get the
satellite feed, in the middle of the night, having to deal with my
reactions all alone since I can't get any of my family to stay up that
late on a Sunday night... I know, I know, your hearts bleed for me! ;)

Sex scenes?? We didn't see sex scenes over here! Is this another Canadian
thing? :) (i came in late, here. Weren't you guys talking about the
steamiest Nick scenes a few days ago? Or are we really talking about sex
scenes?)

Yes, yes, well, in no particular order:

1. With Sandra (an almost sex scene)
2. With Darkangel (a very sexscene)
3. With James (an interesting ouchie sex scene)
4. With Nick (one of many sex scenes, take your pick)
5. With Natalie (two sides of the same coin sex scene)
6. With, uh, Screed (me blanking on sex scenes)
7. Um, Vachon (unseen sex scenes)
8. With Fleur (sex scenes in his dreams... inquiry: Do vampire wet dreams
result in dribbling mouths in the morning?)
9. Well, there's the microphone (dirty list minds sex scenes)
10. With, um... well, Tracy (bad, bad Dianne sex scene involving nostrils
and some other orifices i never even knew about before)

Okay -- as an electrical engineer (who, regrettably, knows nothing
about AKAI VCRs), I'm going to hazard the first guess.
A bolt of lightning is caused by the sudden release of gigantic
amounts of electric potential -- potential created between the earth and
a cloud or between clouds (which, incidentally, is far more common).
Assuming that a vampire cannot affect his or her own electrically
conductive properties, I suppose it has to happen eventually.
We know that vampires are flammable. Since a bolt of lightning is
very, very hot (plasma-type hot; the laws of gases cease to apply within
such a charge), the vampire might catch fire. It happens to trees. Why
not vampires? This, I suspect, would occur before a certain critical
resistance.
If vampires are MORE resistive than this critical resistance, all
this charge from the lightning bolt would probably try to spread itself
evenly over the vampire's exterior (see Gauss' Law) and, being unable to
do so because he/she is too resistive, would end up blowing the vampire
apart. This, too, happens to objects which cannot conduct the electricity
to ground fast enough.
Of course, these are worst-case scenarios. Maybe vampires are okay
with lightning -- heck, they're okay with falling down huge buildings!
(Falling thirteen stories?) I read an intriguing theory on this list
which supposed that vampires have a hyper-sensitive neural structure.
Since the nervous system is electrochemical, that sensitive system might
get scrambled pretty well by such a blast.
I guess I'm trying to say that I don't know. I like the question,
however, and hope that some of these possibilities intrigue the more
imaginative minds out there. Of course, the possibility of vampires
carrying electric charge is an interesting one; do they build up static
electricity when they fly? How many cities have lost power thanks to
distracted vampires (or vampires engaged in flashbacks) crossing high-
power lines? The mind reels at the possibilities.
