As it was not actually WAR proper (but merely intended to inspire interest),
it didn't go out with the WAR header. Instead, mention of "McLisa's brother
Larry" was supposed to give people a heads up that it wasn't real. Clearly,
this didn't work. (Ah, memories are short.)

Let me second that. This was *not* supposed to be so stress-inducing for
people. The messages were supposed to follow one another a lot faster, with
the joke becoming obvious within a few hours. It's dragged out; and people
were therefore taking it for real for far too long.
Apologies, for a joke that didn't *at all* hit the right spot.

P.S. Mildred, I'm glad to see the Mercs' new AI has been dealt with.
Clearly it had a mind of its own, and utter disregard for proper protocol.
If you've figured out what it was after, let me know. Perhaps we can deal.

This is being cc:d to Fkfic-l so anyone who isn't on Forkni-l but
wants to play in a war will now about it. If you want to join the
discussion, you'll need to join Forkni-l. I'll be happy to help if
needed, at the address below.
Ok, now that the truth's out, I want to open the floor for war talk.
From now on, posts will need to begin with the subject line war: so
that only those who are interested in playing need join in. I can't
remember whether this is a default option or not. If you're getting
war: posts and don't want them, let me know, mclisa1014@g......., and
I can reset you not to get them.
Please note that you must put the colon after the word war. Otherwise
the listserv software won't understand that it's a topic.
Also, we're not going into a war before everybody knows and most
people agree. The first few wars were spontaneous or at least not
announced in advance, but things are too complicated how for that.
More tomorrow, after I get some sleep.

Just in case the question ever arises again, I had myself be Larry Merlin's
sister many wars ago when I needed programming and hacking on a cosmic
scale. I don't know how to hack and my programming is at sub-kindergarden
lever. <g> I also made myself a divorcee, with Merlin as my maiden name.
In real life I don't have a brother and I've never been married.
I forgot that not everybody would know that. My bad <shaking head>.

O Grand High Pooh-bah,
You have said that the recent attempt to hack my computer was instigated by
a new AI belonging to the Mercenary Guild. Apparently, it was trying to
look at my graphics files to see if I had made an icon for its and your
faction.
If the AI had been acting under instruction, this would be grounds for War.
However, I accept your assertion that it acted without your instructions.
(We all know that the *human* Mercs have Rules and follow them.)
Nevertheless, as the AI was yours, its actions are your responsibility; so I
feel you owe compensation.
I would suggest about 14 pounds of chocolate. I know it sounds a lot (!)
But it's not for me. I think it should be divvied up proportionate to
membership, and delivered to the HQs of all the factions taking part in the
next War, so they'll get it when they arrive in Toronto.
Does this seem reasonable to you? Or do you have a counteroffer?
