Oh, dear! How embarrassing. (And we've had warnings on list about this
sort of thing before, haven't we?) I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions,
you're right. I mean, why on earth would Mildred try to access my computer?
I should have realized it was something like this. At the very least I
should have written to ask her what was going on, *warn* her to take
precautions. Certainly, it was wrong of me to just go assuming the worst!

Thank you so much for pointing this out.

Oh. Right. I just went back to the discussion we had.

Now I can breathe a little easier. I hadn't responded in a little while
because I was doing a fairly intensive scan/test on my laptop (which hadn't
been on in over a month), and getting gently bitched at by my best friend
who's laptop I use from time to time during *his* extra scans and testing
(which we had done because a person on the list had been hacked- it's a
precaution we both always take when someone on our various groups are
compromised).

And since there was no War tag, I got confused over the reality/fkfanfic
world setup for this.

McLisa was ok with this going out as regular messages? I'm fairly certain
that I'm not the only one who would think this is for real.

Everyone, I've not used a pc on a regular basis for a couple of years now.
I primarily use my iPhone, and I'm not aware of any antivirus stuff for this
device, but I'll look again.

The iBook that I use occasionally is always updated with anti-virus gear and
has been tested extensively and is clean. It wasn't even turned on for almost
a month before this all started.

Likewise, a friend's laptop I use from time to time has likewise been kept up
to date and is clean.

I and my friend are both in the computer field. Me, tech support and knowing
how messed up a computer can get with these things, him a programmer with a
security focus.

I've changed all my passwords to my accounts, and haven't seen any records
of bad login attempts that weren't my own fat-fingering the new password.

I can say with confidence that it isn't me.

And I'm sorry it took so long to respond. I've been running scans and
cleaning on all of the computers I touch since the first notice of hacking
went up (even before my name came up) and not paying attention to the list.
It's a precaution I take whenever any of my friends or someone from a list
belongs to reports hacking.

Likewise, we should look into if my address was being spoofed. Like Steph
said, that header gives up so much info.

I hope to get to the bottom of this soon.

Let me just say that those of you who know me, take a second look at the
reference to my brother Larry. :)

(Resending, as I originally sent this to McLisa privately by mistake)
Greer, Mildred, McLisa: Was there some warning that this was a war-like
joke, that I missed? I found these posts, and the idea of a potential
s*&tstorm on the list, very stress-inducing.

I have to second what Laurie says... And aren't War posts supposed to have a
header indicating such?

Hey,

After some extra digging in the MercCentral computers I think that the AI I
was going to ask McLisa permission to create for the Mercs got a little out
of hand and decided to find where Greer had been hiding the Merc faction icon.

That is now one dismantled AI. He forgot the Merc rule: no contract, no
job… no job, no action!

----------------
Now, in reality: I am so sorry for the confusion, folks.

This was a joke designed to get people interested in War… but since it was
cooked up with McLisa's permission a month ago, and there were no tags on
the messages, I forgot and missed my cue. (and panicked like any person in
real life may have done under these circumstances.)

Bad actor, no chocolate covered biscuits.

I would like to follow this pseudo story to the conclusion we cooked up if
the rest of the list is ok with it, but I think we really need some sort of
tag to help stave off further confusion.

There isn't really any role-playing outside of War… and we can't use RP as a
tag because of the Rat Pack. Any suggestions?

Yours truly apologetically,
The Grand High Poobah of the Mercs.
