"Brightknightie" on AO3/LJ/DW ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2013 16:39:46 -0400 From: Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> Subject: Re: Discussing "Last Act" On Mon, 29 Jul 2013, Walt said; > Also, this episode has some of the best quotes of the > series. > When Nick is holding the guy out the window, > Schanke says to not drop him, think of the > paperwork. That is certainly one of the funniest lines, in one of the most memorable scenes. It's no wonder that, after a few other such incidents, Schanke could start to wonder about Nick (not least in "Close Call"). How did he explain it to himself? I can only suppose that he assumes that Nick was hyped on adrenaline. Or maybe Nick whammied him...again. > And, finally, one of the biggest logic holes in the > whole series: Erica commits suicide at dawn, but > apparently no one from the police shows up until > the night shift comes? Curiously, had they cared to plug the plot hole, they could simply have played up the fact that Nick and Schanke are working different shifts. If you remember, in "Dark Knight", Stonetree reassures them that they will only have to work together at the shift change. (In the real Toronto, there's an hour overlap between shifts in order to ensure that there are always police on duty.) Of course, in most episodes, both men work the night shift. However, at this point in the series, TPTB haven't yet made the decision to set aside the initial idea of having one work days, the other nights. We know this because, later in "Last Act", Schanke visits the fiance's apartment on his own, in daylight. So, the first act *could* have had Schanke handed their new case in the morning, and briefly gone to the park and seen the mysteriously abandoned clothes. Nick would then have been shown the evidence (and recognized the ring) when he came on shift in the evening. The story could then have proceeded essentially as we see it here--but without the time discrepancy. You know, a lot of episodes could have done with a halfway decent beta-ing!
