Is Bach to be considered greater because he had a large family? Does he somehow thereby earn himself and his music "more" immortality than Beethoven (if such a thing were possible)? Or is "Last Act" really giving us a superficial examination of a complicated ethical issue? Let's face it, in Nick and Erica we have two vampires who could do with some heavy-duty counselling for depression. Greer ========================================= It was certainly a topic needing more than a one-hour show timeslot to fully explore. Sadly, it was neither a 2-parter, nor taken up again in some future ep. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2013 15:53:51 -0700 From: Walt Doherty <wdoherty5@c.......> Subject: Re: Discussing "Last Act" - From: "Greer Watson" > > I think of someone like the childless Beethoven, whose music is still > admired. Is Bach to be considered greater because he had a large family? Sometimes we don't know who has been influenced by us. There was a girl in high school who helped keep me sane (and aline) just because she always (always) smiled at me and said hello. She' certainly be immortal in my mind (even if I have kno idea of what her name is). Likewise, in some of mu teaching stints, I've learned that I've had more influence on some of my pupils that I ever thought possible. So, passing on one's genes is not necessary in my book. > > Or is "Last Act" really giving us a superficial examination of a complicated > ethical issue? Let's face it, in Nick and Erica we have two vampires who > could do with some heavy-duty counselling for depression. > For the most part, it was discussed enough for me. I don't think it was so much superficial as it was limited. There's only so much you can cover in 45 minutes, especially when you are dealing with a historical problem, a contemporary problem, and a personal problem. Also, this episode has some of the best quotes of the series. When Nick is holding the guy out the window, Schanke says to not drop him, think of the paperwork. At the end of the play: Schanke: Call me a bore. Nick & Nat, together: A bore! ;-) And, finally, one of the biggest logic holes in the whole series: Erica commits suicide at dawn, but apparently no one from the police shows up until the night shift comes? So, her clothes, including Erica's large ring, remained on the park bench all day without being disturbed. Yeah, sure. On the other hand, if you want Nick to be involved in dealing with this event, you have to gloss over the time discrepancy. Walt Doherty wdoherty5@c.......
