So good to know I'm not the only one to fancy they saw this in him. There
was something there, I don't know what, but Stonetree saw behind the
facade. The fact that he was the Captain who allowed Nick to work nights
only was significant, IMO.
It's sad we never saw him learn the truth. Wasn't it his precinct that
exploded? ;-( I figured he blew up when Vudu started exploding police
stations, and that Captain Stonetree was scattered in many pieces all over
downtown Toronto.

Yes. I've often felt that there was a camaraderie between Nick and
Stonetree that was never quite developed or expressed openly.
Nick would often go into Stonetree's office without knocking,
and their relationship was more than just supervisor to employee.
I think that originally the buddy-system was going to be between
Nick and Stonetree, but then Kapelos just kind of picked it up
and ran with it, and then the whole dynamic between
Natalie and Nick was added. Apparently too many things
going on to develop all of them.
