Real Life (translate: my job!) has me running in circles right now. HOWEVER, the good news is that I may get my employer to pay for a trip to Toronto for me at the end of August! :) We're sending a recruiting team up there...but that's got nothing to do with FK. Except saying "hi" to everyone and staying the weekend over Labor Day. :) Anyhoo...last weekend I received a copy of Kindred: The Embraced that I had ordered, and it's difficult not to compare and contrast it with FK, seeing as how it started right around the time that FK ended. After I watched the entire DVD set, I went and rewatched various episodes from FK from Seasons 1 & 2. I'm still struck by how well written our Forever Knight is, and the sheer *depth* of the characters and plots. They are obviously different shows with different premises, but FK is just much more mature and honestly, more believable as an urban fantasy. :) Kristen Fife, Author http://writersweekend.com - Spend a Passionate Weekend With Your Muse ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2007 02:18:48 EDT From: Gaelin Wade <GaelinWade@a.......> Subject: Re: FK and Kindred: The Embraced fenix23fyre@y....... writes: > They are obviously different shows with different premises, but FK is just > much more mature and honestly, more believable as an urban fantasy. :) ~~~~~~~~~~~ I suppose that is to be expected given that Kindred was based on a role playing game. Is that a step up or step down from a graphic novel? :-) Besides, one was a crime drama. The other, a Spelling produced, uh, soap opera. I enjoyed both FK and Kindred. (Kindred after all had Mark Frankel and Patrick Bauchau and FK had Nigel Bennett:-) ) I thought both were entertaining, yet different. FK seemed more about an individual, Nick, and his life with those around him. Whereas Kindred spent more time depicting an entire Vampire society with Julian Luna at its center. Also, Nick was tormented by what he was and what he had done and sought redemption for it. Julian had regrets, but accepted that a part of him was monstrous yet he never let that define him. He, well, embraced who he was. He was kind of like Nunkies in that regard. But more moody like Nick. :-) I think it's fair to say that FK dealt with darker themes where Kindred wasn't very thematic at all. FK's episodes were self contained. Kindred relied on developing the stories and characters over the course of several episodes. Unfortunately, it only lasted for 8. I think it's difficult to compare the two series in terms of development. Kindred had only 10% the number of episodes of FK. But in general, I thought Julian Luna was a fairly well developed central character and there were others that had potential. I would have loved to learn more about Daedalus and the Nosferatu and more about Archon as the former Prince of the City.
