If you are coming to San Jose, you can easily go upto San Francisco for the day
via the train. The ride is about 1.5 hours and once you hit SF, there are
busses to take you where you want to go. Or, you can take the train to BART, which
will take you downtown. From BART you can catch a cable car to Union Square,
which is something to see at Christmas time. Then from Union Square, you can
take a cable car to the wharf.
If you want to stay in the San Jose area, the kids science museum is fun, and
Christmas in the Park is just around the corner. You can also go and explore
the Stanford University campus, or you can rent a car and drive down the coast to
Monterey or over the hills to Santa Cruz. Just don't try swimming, the water
is freezing.
These are just a few ideas the quickly come to mind. I was born in SF, so I'm
partial to SF.
