Sunrise, sunset (3) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2006 23:26:07 -0800 From: Megan Hull <mistrydder@y.......> Subject: Sunrise, sunset It's been quiet for a couple of days, so I thought I'd throw a question out. What, exactly, determines sunrise and sunset? In areas with high mountains, the sun is visible for much less time each day than, say, out on the ocean. What if a vampire (FK-type, of course) lived in the bottom of the Grand Canyon? One can see the blue sky for much longer than one can see the sun, so which is sunrise? When the sky turns blue, or when the sun comes into view? Would the Grand Canyon be the ideal place for vampires? Would it mess with their ability to get a good day's sleep? A fair amount of light does get down there, even tho it's not direct, would that be safe for them? OK, so it's a bunch of questions. It's something I've been wondering for a while! From the evidence in the show, it appears that the vampires (at least, the older ones like Nick, Janette, and LaCroix) can stand indirect light with no difficulty. So I would say that it's only the direct light of the sun that is damaging to them. Which would give them the ability to move about on, say, stormy days where there's no sun visible. Or, as in the example you give, down in canyons and valleys where the direct light doesn't reach. As far as affecting sleep cycles, though, I wouldn't think so. I expect that if there were any vampires living in northern Canada or Alaska, where the night can be almost total, that they would still sleep in a pretty regular pattern, despite not having to simply because of the rising sun. *tosses two pennies out* --Roger ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2006 11:16:42 -0500 From: "Phillips, Tim" <Tim.Phillips@s.......> Subject: Re: Sunrise, sunset >What, exactly, determines sunrise and sunset? The wikipedia has a definition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunrise but I don't think it is "practical" from the standpoint of vampires. I know I've heard somewhere that a Islamic practice for timing morning and evening prayer is to call sunrise or sunset the moment at which you can/can not distinguish between a black and a white thread. That actually seems more useful as it does indicate an intensity of light above and below which our eyes do not function...so it does tell you how "powerful" the sun is at that moment. From what FK shows us of vampires, it does appear to be the direct sunlight that is the real factor. Nick is shown in a number of episodes "racing the sun" and going home in fairly bright twilight. In a narrow slot canyon orientated north/south...I could see a vampire being able to withstand being outside well into the morning and fairly early in the afternoon. That said, I don't think FK was extremely rigorous in following a show-bible that defined the level of sunlight that was dangerous. I'd bet if we watched close we'd find someone smoking in light conditions that they withstood safely a few episodes later. I suspect that the real issue was that the shooting schedule worked with them one day and against them another.
