Hey! They may not win at football, but the Belgians and the Dutch excel at horse sports. Belgium's warmblood horses are famed for their ability at dressage and show jumping, and some of the biggest shows are held in S'Hertogenbosch, which is the capital of North Brabant. Show jumping and dressage draw huge crowds in Europe. They just don't riot like those football fans. <g> Nancy Kaminski ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2006 22:24:55 EDT From: Lori Isabella <LDukie913@a.......> Subject: Re: FORKNI-L Digest - 10 Jun 2006 to 11 Jun 2006 (#2006-159) Didn't Nick mention in one episode that he left Chicago when they put lights in at Wrigley Field. That would suggest that he followed baseball at one point. Yes. That line was followed by one from Janette that I have always loved. She says something like "I hate those slow games, they make eternal life even longer." Ever jump a course? It takes strength, balance, timing, and courage (I've only jumped to 4' 6", but there's nothing like hanging up there over the fence and looking straight down your horse's neck at the ground so far, far away <g>). Believe me, the riders have to be athletes, too. Dressage is just as intensive for the riders. > And in North America, too! The Continental will start at > Spruce Meadows later > this week. Now if US television would just bring us Spruce Meadows, but alas, not one cable channel in my area thinks there's a big enough audience in the States for it. I haven't seen any show jumping for ages except what's taped by friends (waves at Mary). Obligatory FK tie-in: I think Nick would prefer dressage to jumping because of its elegance and aristocratic background. Heck, I can imagine he studied with the Old Masters like Pluvinel and De la Guiniere in the 1700s. Besides, he would look great in formal riding attire. <g> Nancy Kaminski ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2006 00:45:17 -0400 From: Don Fasig <argent@c.......> Subject: ADMIN: FORKNI-L Rules Rule time again.... Unfortunately the book didn't have much information. Does anyone have any more info/history, and do you think that Nick and his mortal family might have had something to do with it? Might be an interesting idea for a story if there is enough information. Might be an interesting idea > for a story if there is enough information. The Brabant is a true heavy draft horse (see http://www.ruralheritage.com/brabant/index.htm for photos and some information). This is not a horse that would be used for riding (not even by knights in plate armor, the heaviest of the armored knights). The breed was developed in the Brabant region, and it is certainly possible that Nick's family bred heavy draft horses of that type. I think it more likely that a noble family would be more interested in the development of war horses and riding horses in general, for their own use and for the prestige. You don't get props for breeding plow horses for the serfs. <g> Nick would have ridden a sturdy but agile type of horse, similar to the current-day riding type of Friesian (think the black horse in "Ladyhawke") or the recently-established Spanish-Norman horse (see http://www.spanish-norman.com/). The horse would not have been all that tall (if you look at the art of the period, you'll see how small the horses were in relation to the riders), probably between 15 and 16 hands tall, which makes sense if you are wearing chain mail, are armed, and need to get on and off your horse a lot.
