I'm not sure of the origin, but "Fen" is the tradition plural name for
science fiction/fanasy/horror/etc. fans and has filtered into other fandoms
      as well.

Probably like _man_ is to _men_, so then _fan_ is to _fen_.

Obviously I also need to be more careful about what's in the "To:" field
before I hit the send button. I meant that last message to go only to

Yes... and they contradicted themselves <eg>

In "Dark Knight", Janette says that she'd been in Toronto three years, and
only *now* Nick comes to visit her.

In "Human Factor" (roughly three years after DK), either Janette or Lacroix
mentions that she'd run the Raven for 20 years...
 >>

I actually put in Dark Knight to see if the answer was there and only watched
the scene where N&J reunited for the first time in years. She did NOT say
anything about how long she'd been in town. I had thought to check Black
Buddha but didn't think it would be there, and I hate that Schanke died.
::sniffle:: I didn't know what ep had the flashback with Janette selling the
club to Lacroix, and figured that would have the info I needed.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out with that one.

That's in Human Factor, the ep where Janette is mortal and comes to TO to
avenge her lover's death.

The folk etymology is that it came from a typo in a Trek zine sometime
in the 60s or 70s, and enough people were amused by it that it became
common usage. Considering the fannish propensity for playing with the
language, before I heard this story I had always assumed it was a play
on "man/men". And if the zine-typo story is entirely true, I'd bet the
farm that's why the term stuck.

Not that typos *have* to be from the Dark Age of Mimeographing. After
"False Heart", the NatPack is always on the lookout for a "packing
space" to leave the car in. (We love you, Susan! *eg*)

My thought was that Nick wakes up in the hospital beside Tracy, he'd fallen
asleep, and the whole second part of the ep was a dream and then Tracy wakes
up. Then Nat and Reese come in to see how Tracy is doing, find Nick there,
it's sunrise (oh no) so Nick has to hide in a closet for the rest of the day.
Could have a hilarious scene with a doctor who looks a lot like Schanke
opening up the closet and finding Nick there.

Me, neither. I thought what you were called depended on what faction you
joined. And, if you're like me and you haven't joined a faction, you were
simply a FK fan.

Hey all -- just twenty days left in the ScreedWasHere.com fiction contest!!
Prizes, prizes, prizes!!

If this is successful, there will be future contests based on other FK
characters, with related prizes.

Just remember, even if Screed isn't your fav character -- or you're entirely
intimidated by "Screed Speak" -- you can still participate! Have your
characters THINK about Screed. Have your characters AVOID contact with Screed.
Have your characters toss him out of the
Raven/precinct/church/morgue/loft/apartment before he can utter a word. As long
as he motivates the characters in the main plot, that's all that matters.

But, if you want to do the Screed-Speak thing, check out the Ratpack page for
helpful language suggestions: http://www.ScreedWasHere.com/Ratpack/ -- in it's
most basic form, acceptable Screed speech is change MY to ME, change TO to TA,
change YOU to ya, and drop the first H on any word, HANG ON becomes 'Ang On.
Not so hard now is it. Oh, and take a tip from Greg Kramer: he says that he
always writes out the proper English first, then goes back and "translates" it
into Screedish.

So, good luck! Just remember Halloween is Greg's favorite holiday, so I hope
you all will get into the spirit here and enter something by October 31st!!

I think this is one of those words whose origins are clouded in fannish
history and memory. It definitely pre-dates FK. (I've never heard it
applied to FK before. )

When I first entered active fandom (about 20 years ago or so) 'fen' was a
term used for followers of elf/fairy/mythological series such as Anne
MacCaffrey's Pern or Richard Pini's Elfquest. Followers of science fiction
based on 'science' - space travel, etc., or TV shows and movies used 'fan'.

Surprisingly, the actress who played the vampiress Alma is the same person
who played the human rock superstar Rebecca -- I did not realize this until
I saw it in one of Cheryl's awesome monthly FK Alumni VCR Alerts [BTW,
Thanks, Cheryl for all your hard work in getting that info to us! :)] and
she had Tracy Cook listed as Alma & Rebecca! {{{I also recently saw her in
an ep of "Due South" as the agent of a hockey player}}}

However, IIRC, was not Alma in at least 2 or at the most 3 FK eps, one of
them maybe being the 'For I Have Sinned' ep-- I know that is where Schanke
confesses to 'Father Nick' about going in the Raven alone because Alma's
there, but was that the first ep in which Schanke meets her and is that also
the one in which she tries to make him "a permanent member of the night
shift", as Janette warns him when she rescues him before Alma gets her fangs
into him, or was that a different ep?
