When I read Carrie's comment: > Interesting that LaCroix had only three individuals in his life close > enough to him to warrant killing before he was 'alone'. I immediately wondered, "What about Janette?" If, as most people (myself included) believe, she was a vamp again at the end of HF, why does Divia not know about her? Surely, she would know of LC and J's relationship through Nick's blood, if nowhere else. Or did she know about J, fly to her (off screen), and kill her, too? Any thoughts on this? Not another reason for Janette to be dead! ;) Because she was killing vampires *surrounding* LaCroix and Janette's way-the-heck-off someplace far away? Because the connection between vampires seems to weaken, to some extent, when they're at a distance from one another? (Remember when LaCroix says to Nick in HF that he can't believe Janette is in Toronto -- he would have sensed her. This seems to imply that he doesn't sense her wherever she is . . . ) Remember, we don't know if Nick or LaCroix even know where she is after her rather abrupt departure. And even if Divia sensed Janette in Nick's blood, she went straight from Nick's to LaCroix's, didn't she? Just my 2 cents . . . I've marked that section with spoiler spaces in case you want to read the first parts of my post. Add'l Warning: LONG & rambling post! (Sorry, I got carried away...) Dear fellow listmembers: Did someone recently mourn the fact that the old-time listmembers weren't posting any more? Hah! Be careful what you wish for... :-) Brief introductory comments: I've been here since the beginning, and it's been one h*ll of a ride. Forever Knight was my first fandom, and I joined FORKNI-L two months after its inception by Jean/Jeanster/Jaye/Phoenix/"she of the many psuedonyms." I posted the first piece of fanfic to FKFIC-L, and (with the aid of Margaret, Valery, Scottie, and that package of chocolate froggies), founded the Cousins-- the very first FK faction. The first-ever List Party was held at my (then) brand-new home during San Francisco WorldCon, and it was a blast meeting listmembers face-to-face. Of course, FORKNI-L had a membership total of 86 people in those days... :-) It's been a wonderfully enriching and fun three years with you all, and, inspired by Marian's comments, I now feel the need to inflict upon you: Forever Knight: Karin's Retrospective 1. Introduction Marian and I have discussed the topics expressed in her eloquent & thoughtful "rant" several times over the past two years. Now that she's made her side of the dialogue public, I thought I'd throw in my $.02-worth, too. It's not really a rebuttal, but my take on why I haven't been as enthusiastic for the second and third seasons of FK as I was for the first season. 2. Themes and Storylines - Season One: Nick turns his back on vampirism, denies his nature, strives towards mortality. LaCroix is dead, but haunts Nick in a series of object lessons. Freed of his master's oppressive presence, Nick is occasionally victorious in the present day. There is hope for Nick's achievement of his quest. - Season Two: With LaCroix back on the scene, and trying a new strategy, Nick is forced into a series of compromises because of the tug-of-war between LaCroix/Janette on the one hand, and Natalie/Schanke on the other hand. Nick is frustrated, unstable (as evinced in the enormous risks he takes in "Near Death," and his nervous breakdown in "Curiouser & Curiouser") and he is rarely victorious, either in flashback or in the present day (The Fix, Be My Valentine). His hopes of achieving his quest seem more and more hopeless as the season progresses (Near Death; The Fix; Crazy Love, with Nick's resumption of a sexual relationship with Janette). - Season Three: Nick begins the season with enormous losses. His Toronto life seems on the verge of disintegration-- he loses two mortal friends, Janette leaves him, and he is tempted to abandon everything and start over somewhere else. As the season progresses, Nick's quest is on hold while episodes focus on Tracy, Urs, and Vachon. Nick then suffers further setbacks and defeats (Night in Question, Sons of Belial) and begins to reconcile with LaCroix, whose strategy of appeasement and paternalism seems to be working (AtA). Nick no longer seems hopeful of achieving his quest; rather, he seems to be trying to find a comfortable balance between the mortal and vampire worlds-- trying to become an ethical vampire rather than a redeemed mortal. 3. Why Season One? Without passing judgment on the relative worths of the three seasons as "good," "bad," or "indifferent," because I consider them all about equal on the acting/writing/production levels, Season One was may favorite because of its themes-- the Loss of the Light and Nick's struggle with himself to regain it (ie, Dark Knight; For I Have Sinned; Last Act; Feeding the Beast; the Rebecca music-video ep whose name escapes me at this moment). And here's where I disagree with Marian. I don't think that Forever Knight went downhill after the first season (which had its share of rotten episodes, too), but rather that its focus shifted. I've mostly enjoyed all three seasons-- each had its share of excellent episodes and total dogs-- but Season One struck a chord in my psyche with its "fall-and-redemption" theme-- a very old and very powerful story and one that has always appealed to me greatly. I do agree with Marian, however, that in order to keep the redemption story arc of Season One, LaCroix should have stayed dead in the present day, and appeared only in flashback. No offense to the brilliant job that Nigel did with the character, but LaCroix alive in the present day meant that Nick's only options were compromise (his balancing act of Season Two between Lacroix/Janette and Schanke/Natalie), reconciliation (Season Three), or utter defeat. 4. Endings (contains Last Knight Spoilers) a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o So I was deeply saddened but not surprised to hear (from the Last Knight spoilers) that the series ends with Nick ultimately defeated in his quest. If I've understood the Last Knight storyline correctly, Nick is unable to fully reconcile his vampire self with his desire to be a mortal man in a mortal relationship (echoes of his disastrous marriage to Alyssa in "Dead of Night"). He gambles all by trying Janette's cure with Natalie-- and loses. Death is then Nick's way of opting out of the struggle between Light and Dark in his soul-- because after killing Natalie, he no longer cares whether or not he's been redeemed (as he did in Near Death). All of his progress towards a moral and physical cure has been nixed by drinking Natalie's blood. He departs his vampire existence as he entered it-- with the murder of a mortal woman in a frenzy of lust and hunger (Dark Knight flashback). And that, beloved fellow listmembers, makes for powerful storytelling but is a real bummer. I don't usually post here. (I've gotten too accustomed to just lurking around and listening) But I just want to give a small opinion about Last Knight which I copied off satellite on Sunday night. I have to admit that I am now watching LK for the third time and I find that I dislike it a little less every time I see it. I don't think it will ever be one of my favorite eps but it sort of grows on you. To be honest the writing really sucks but GWD's direction almost saves the day. But the real saving grace here is the acting. Nigel is as good as ever but GWD and CD really get the chance to shine and do they ever take advantage of that chance! Both manage to show three seasons of love and the anguish of love unrealised in their body language and facial expressions that the words don't. Maybe the best way to see this episode is from the view of an undying romantic like myself. Real love, the truest of loves, like that between Nick and Nat, is so strong that it can exist not only through this lifetime but into the next. Yes, there is disappointment that we didn't get a cure for Nick or a different resolution of any kind, but we have to take what we have been given and make the best of this awful situation. OBTW, did anyone else catch the little statement that it was Sony that asked for the ending of Last Knight to be altered to something more ambiguous? Maybe they didn't want it to be so final after all. I have finally seen it. So I finally read the spoiler posts. Honestly, until the last segment, I was thinking it wasn't going so badly. Thinking, maybe they *did* make the ending a little better. In my mind, I thought maybe they would have taken out the part about Nick asking to be staked, that the ambiguity at the end would have more to do with whether or not he had brough Nat across. So, boy was I upset! But the part where I lost it was when Nick said to LaCroix, " you are my closest friend." What a revolution from where things were in the beginning! Such a sacrifice on LaCroix' part; to be willing to assist in Nick's death because it is what he wants. I suppose there is wiggle room here; after all, Nat wasn't dead yet. Maybe just as LaCroix was going to stake Nick, she moved. I don't know. It's 2:30 am, and I am still shook up, I can't really think straight. One humorous note: A while back, there was a thread as to when everybody's birthday was. Well, we know Natalie's now - it's April 14. And Tracy. I, for one, am glad that she got to know Nick's secret, even if it was because she was being killed off. I know I have many more thoughts floating around in my head, but it's going to take some time to get coherent. Why did it have to end (?) this way? Dear Catherine Siemans-- thank you for your very kind comments. Heavens! Disagree with my opinions all you like. (I do, often.) Dear Karen Stortz-- Thank you for identifying so clearly so many of TPTB. It is quite helpful to know who was responsible for what. I aim my responses toward Parriot because I believe he's the boss, and has the final say on what gets done, and because the functions of the other creative people in charge of stories are less visible. Your post helped make some of that invisibility go away. Thanks. and when you said: <...they've come full circle in a way we never expected; depicting a triumph of despair and loss over hope, and failure where there should have been success is perhaps a more true reflection of the series overall...> I wished <I'd> said something half as concise. Dear Laurie Fenster-- You're right, too. Different season fans like different things about the show. My expectations were formed on "Nick Knight" and "Dark Knight" (and "Cherry Blossoms" -- my very first viewed FK ep.) My lack of ability to accept the live Lacroix because of the story issues his resurrection brings up for me didn't stop me from enjoying watching Ger and Nigel bring their interactions to life. They were always good together--even when I laughed when I shouldn't... I'm sorry to have been on this one-note kick for so long. I just kept feeling like I was yelling "Watch out for that train! Watch out for that--" (Wouldn't you know, I had a <really hard> time watching the haunted house ep, too...) Dear All-- and despite my moaning and groaning, I will always be grateful to FK for the stimulus (hey, I always knew what day of the week I was in in relation to 'air-day') -- and the horizon broadening (who knew Brabant was so interesting?) -- and the camaraderie here (you guys are amazing!) I'd read the script. I even liked the Gotterdammerrung "everyone dies and Lacroix takes over for the fat lady and sings one last little aria" way the script was originally written -- except for the 'tale of woe/Juliet and her Romeo' tag -- I guess I have a weakness for operatic moves. The script remains my favorite part. With exception of Nigel Bennett, who plays a once-again-reserved Lacroix (his world-weary, "oh, I hope you thought this through" is *so* parental and resigned) I don't like how it was acted, and I don't like how it was shot. But I mean *like* -- not "I don't respect." They made choices that I can't feel any affection for, and on a first viewing, I can't even see through the emotional response to a cooler technical one. It's interesting that GWD, who directed, gave himself some really unflattering closeups; he really does seem to be a man without vanity. Catherine Disher's reading of the "bite me, bite me please" speech absolutely stood everything I thought I understood about Natalie Lambert right on its head. She played the scene exactly like she played Natalie's fantasy sequence while reading the vampire novel in the vampire-novelist episode last year ("Stranger than Fiction"?). Oh well. This never happened <g>. Someone thought FK could be killed? Nah -- it's "far too old and powerful." If you haven't read Laurie's detailed spoiler first, I recommend you do so, as I will be removing some of it. I am adding a few opinions to a few key moments detailed in this spoiler (awesome job, Laurie, I think you really caught much of the essence of the episode)... Overall, this is a very emotional and intimate episode. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend watching it with a very open mind (and heart). IMHO, I think it was superbly done (and I'm a tough critic): great directing from Ger, well written script, superbly acted, and probably one of the most daring dramatic series episodes I have ever lived through. Let me reiterate that: "one of the most daring dramatic series episodes I have ever lived through". Yes, I believe many will dispute this episode to the finest detail, debating the why and wherefore's, but I doubt I'll get involved in any of these debates, if I even do more than skim them. Personal preference: I usually just accept most of an episode as it is. Especially this one. Enough said. What LaCroix narrates throughout the episode is crucial. To me, he describes the thoughts and feelings from the vampire point of view, his world view. A father's last words to his son? With his encounters with Nick in the episode, we get the message that it's time for them (him and Nick) to move on. That by Nick's staying, he's only hurting those mortals around him more. The Nick & Nat interaction in the entire episode revolves around how much the death of her friend gives Natalie a rude awakening about the status of her life (and lack there of). The impression left here is how lonely Nat has always been. The one thing that changed that was when Nick entered her life. (Come on, she remembers the exact date!). Believing her friend left her diary and suicide note for Nat for a reason, to warn Nat not to fall into the same trap, Nat pressures Nick into deciding what they are going to do with their relationship. One personal thought here: let me say that unless you've been here before (loneliness, emptiness, depression, suicidal), it may be hard to comprehend how Nat could feel this way. (Been there, felt that, have recovered; but I was shocked to see how realistic the scenes were acted. Wow!). (Don't they have some sort of mental health plan / therapy for these people thru the Metro P.D. benefit plan?) I also believe this episodes accurately shows the depth of the love between Nick and Nat. A true Romeo & Juliet type of love, but with the additional twist of believing in an afterlife where they can be together. Then there's the debate over "how come you can bring <insert-name-here, in this case Tracy> across, but not me?" My belief is that Nick loves Nat too much to 'taint' her goodness by bringing her across. If anybody understands it, I think Nick does, knowing what the vampirism does to a 'good' soul. I think he also knows he's not very good at bringing someone across... especially when it's someone he loves so much. From Laurie's spoiler: > > Nick finds Dawkins, starts to whammy him as Tracy, unbeknownst to them > both, closes in from behind Nick. Dawkins loses it and fires, striking > Tracy. He squeezes off several more shots as Nick vamps out completely and > slams him to the wall. (Note: the filming is bad, imo; I'm still trying > to figure out how she got struck in the back of the head.) I think the bullets ricocheted (sp?) (listen closely to the background sound effects) off the wall(s), thus hitting Tracy in the back of the head. Whether this is realistic or not, I'm not sure. I thought this was a rather quick (and drastic) way to get rid of Tracy. Why was Tracy killed in this episode? Was it necessary? Pay attention to the dialogue between LaCroix and Nick that follows: > LC: Nicholas ... don't you see? You have overstayed your welcome. The > pain you are causing your mortal friends is no longer acceptable to > them. Those that do survive will not allow their relationship with > you to continue in the way that it was. They will demand change. And you > will be compromised. One way or another." > > LC: "For all the things that we are, there is a price to be paid. Love can be > tasted but never savoured. In our darkest moments we may envy > mortality, but we should never aspire to it. Guilt ... is a poison. And > staying past our time ... is death. But it need not be. If we > truly care for a mortal ... truly love one ... then we must go. Isn't that > something that _you_ taught _me_?" > This is probably the key area I just don't get about this episode. Other than Nick being blinded by his love, why can't he see that by sticking around, he has only and will continue to hurt Nat? I think he realizes this by the next encounter he has with Nat. > > Nat glances around; she's been packing. The contents of her desk have been > put into a box. She puts the diary into the box and puts the cover on. I couldn't quite understand this either. Did they do this to save time? (I hope someone will tell us if the Canadian version is different here?) Or was Nick perhaps testing his self-control, before taking things further, at this point? We get a montage of flashbacks, > from Nick's many lifetimes. Is Natalie receiving these images? I got the strong impression that Natalie was receiving these images from Nick, based not only on what we were told in Francesca, but by the reactions Natalie has to what we see intercut with the images (great acting, CD! great editing too.) I also got the impression, based on the violence we saw in the images, that Nat was a little shocked by same of the images of Nick's past, with the last image being from when Nick was brought across. It's most likely due to lack of time, we only saw Natalie's impressions, not Nick's. Obviously, whatever he saw must of been darn good if he couldn't stop in time. > > Nat, swoons and collapses. I'm not even convinced that Nat is dead yet. Do Nick and Nat both die, and meet in the next life to live happily after? Much as some people may disagree with me, I actually liked this ending. Sure, I would have preferred the storybook happily ever after ending. But, at the same time, IMHO, this would have made it more difficult to bring back another season or make the upcoming movies. This way leaves the door open to alot of possibilities (including alot of great fan fiction). (And it's sure better than the Romeo and Juliet end originally posted in the spoilers). So, yes it's over. This season. This chapter closes. Is the show over? Absolutely not. This season finale / series finale was riveting, amazing, a masterpiece of film making (acting, directing, editing, sound, cinematography) and we should all feel proud to have been privy to and part of it all. It's late and this message is rather long enough as it is. (Already preparing to duck the flames). I usually don't post messages about episodes, but this one really moved me. Worst Aspects Dialogue Acting The poor dialogue and acting directly relate with each other, though. First, the writer stoops to writing simple sentence structure for Lacroix' part. Lacroix is not a simple sentence structure guy. He is very much a compound-complex sentence structure vampire. For example: in the Pompeii scene he says to Divia "I want to live" --I wasn't convinced that this was true because Bennett delivered that line with confusion. I think he felt the strangeness of Lacroix' simplicity at this point and was struggling to link the dialogue with the character. Perhaps if he had said "Given the immediate peril that I have found myself in , I believe I would prefer to live, wouldn't you?" or something to that nature I would have been convinced. I DO think Bennett did an EXCELLENT job at portraying a someone nervous Lacroix. The scenes at the Raven where he appeared disquieted by the evil he sensed were performed with skill. In addition to Bennett's awkwardness, I felt Davies struggled with his lines too. For once, he is played against the backdrop of Lacroix; as a character for Lacroix to bounce his feelings off of rather than vice-versa. There was no room for Nick to angst in this episode and I felt that attributed the sense of disjointedness I felt when watching the character. Many of Davies' lines were written ambiguously, subject to interpretation. I believe that he lacked guidance on how Nick should feel (or perhaps received conflicting advice) because he recites his lines with conflicting feelings. For instance, during Lacroix' interrogation I sensed Davies was wrestling with the interpretational delimma. In one line he recites he seems friendly, the next he seems angry, the next he seems sypathetic. I also felt that Davies was somewhat uncomfortable placing his hand on Lacroix' shoulder. It seemed intentionally and strategically placed, rather than sponanteously committed. Part of the problem is that the camera never goes below chest level on these guys (are we hiding something people?) so the affect is lost in the filming. Perhaps if Davies had slapped his hand up on Lacroix shoulder and squeezed it, then released, I would have been more convinced. It was an excellent plot and it was truly exciting to see Lacroix' softer side (despite claims that he was "out of character" I believe he was perfectly in tune with himself). Remember, Good and evil exist in us all, and is in a constant state of flux. Because Lacroix is always played as "the evil guy", he was beginning to risk becoming a flat character. But they broadened his horizons, and it was done well, unlike the portrayal of Reece. Tanya out PS I hope they don't kill Nick in Last Night. WHen I saw him laying on that sun picture possibly dead I was so traumatized! =========================================================================
