On several levels." Speaking of which (a bit of comedy before we enter the long dark post): Reese: "C'mon Nick, the truth is out there!" Nick: "Yeah, but just maybe not in our jurisdiction." Somebody knows their audience damn well. Well, I knew what was coming; Urse and Vachon 'dead', Divia back from it, Nick taking a hit but coming back. I haven't read any of the last week's spoilers, just the plot summaries from a month or so ago. This is all off the top of my head on second viewing. But still... I wasn't ready for this [Let me add, that I think we can resurrect everyone except Divia and Urse---I believe the usual Metro Coroner disposal method is incineration] Maybe it was the sight of the normally unflappable Lacroix actually --- cringing, dare I say it, at the sight of the graverobber in the freezer. Ooooo, and that was almost beyond my gross-out threshold. I like this show in spite of a little blood here and there, not because of it.... No. I think it was Divia's little-girl-lost act, luring Vachon in, and then CHOMP. What a scary bit of work this actress is. Watching the pint-size vampire throw big, tough Vachon, Lacroix, and Nick around like Barbie dolls is way up there on the scare-o-meter. Or maybe it was the someone's-watching-you direction. <shiver> Whatever it was. This one got to me. I'm not not not going to get into questions of good and evil here. Too many issues; let me just say... I'm really glad Divia is dead. Fun as she was to watch, she's far too scary. Fun: Watching Lacroix get arrested. The interview was priceless... and Reese's evaluation of LC was dead-on.("He's guilty of SOMETHING!") Vachon and Tracy making equally blank, what-do-YOU-know? eyes at each other inside the parked car. Lacroix doing his impression of "Scared Straight" on the cowering inmates of the jail. {"Clearly I have a future as a positive influence on the disenfranchised.."} (Really, really cooooolll... hee hee hee) Divia. As I said, genuinely scary; the idea of her mind overwhelming Urse's and Vachon's is not inconceivable. Why did I enjoy watching her? Probably because, like the actress who played Francesca last week, she is one of those who "gets" how to play a vampire. Convincing! And complex. And I could almost feel sorry for the brat... if she weren't so VIOLENT and cold. The irony! The wonderful irony. Nick tried to kill Lacroix two years ago. Lacroix tried to kill Divia two thousand years ago. Divia DID kill her master. Talk about one of those family cycles of violence. Oh, and continuity. This thing had more continuity than any other episode so far, both to FEVER and A More Permanent Hell, and to the series as a whole. [And eyebrows weren't even an issue in this ep. :) But I liked Divia's leather outfit. Did she rip it off the graverobber, or what?] Not Fun at All: I'm very bummed Urse is dead. What a waste. Of character, of potential, of time. Should've done more with her while they had the chance. I'm very, very bummed that Vachon is dead; and I'm almost as bummed that Tracy still doesn't know about Nick, and there's no one she can tell about Vachon. [Who's going to write the first fic of Lacroix wiping Trace's memory of Vachon's death? hmm?] I still dont' think Vachon can't be resurrected; hey, if Divia can come back after all that time and decapitation, then Vachon can recover after a short dirt nap. Obviously, telling if a vamp is dead is pretty difficult. Nat missed the boat entirely on Monica/Jacqueline in "Hearts of Darkness"; Divia came back; Lacroix survived staking first season; Vachon can be alive. Apache, go to it! It's all in the eye of the beholder, and I wouldn't write a death certificate for him or Screed yet. Divia crying at the end... "Daddy, save me..." Ohh, sad, scary, get me out of here now... Enjoyable, but Not Fun: Lacroix feeling isolated, and Nick comforting him. (Awww!!!) The flashback. Like I said, disturbing... I feel sorry for this amoral, cruel, selfish little monster. Daddy's Girl really has no limits, does she? I think the Enforcers would have gotten to her sooner or later, if Lacroix hadn't taken her out. So Lacroix might have had the right idea. On the other hand, the idea of having her as his master for the rest of time might have pushed him over the edge too. It's a toss-up. Tracy and Vachon. There should have been more, damnit. But what there was, was good. More of a suicide on Vachon's part than anything, although Tracy was holding the stake. I STILL can't believe Nick didn't tell her the truth. This can't end so, so, anti-climactically! ["Tracy..." "I'm here---" "Wish me luck..."] Natalie worried about Nick; and that tender look that Nick gives her with the "don't worry, I'll watch my back". (Which just about guarantees the next bit, doesn't it?) Divia vs. Lacroix. The fight 'til the death. Sometimes on this show, you know who's going to win too soon. I knew Lacroix would come out of this alive---but I wasn't sure HOW or IF Divia were going to die. This fight was actually worth the entrance ticket. Lacroix willing to die, until Divia taunts him with killing Nick. Divia's pushing him around like an action figure, LC trying to kill her and failing, then... Nick saves the day. How? His goodness? The fact that he was older than Vachon and Urse? The blood connection to Lacroix and Divia? Contrariness? I don't know why Nick is still alive, but whatever the reason, I'm glad he saved Lacroix. And prevented Lacroix from saving Divia. {How did Nick get there if the sun was shining? Details details don't bother me with details...} Good judgement call on Nick's part, letting Tracy remember about vampires. Although, I hope this means she has a chance at figuring out the truly obvious in our... sob. Last episode!! Weep. I can't believe it's almost over. I just can't. It could very easily have been a two-hour movie -- should have been! There was so much stuff crammed into this ep. So many stories to tell in greater detail. I loved the interaction between LC and Nick in this ep -- very moving. I think Nick's compassion for LC surprised them both. And Nigel's acting was superb! *This* is award winning material!!! The subtlety of his facial expressions, his body language, all throughout the ep -- excellent! He said more with the miriade of expressions that crossed his face in that scene with Urs and Vachon in the Raven than could ever have been expressed in words! You can't see me, but I am *standing* <clap, clap, clap, clap, clap> As always, Vachon, Tracy, and Urs were under-utilized! Though, I must admit that Urs, who had the shortest death scene, had the best/most-intense one. Why was she the only one of the three who fought back? She and Divia really went at it in that elevator -- guess Urs wasn't so eager to die after all! Vachon and Nick just kinda took it from her -- guess they were paying attention when their moms told them never to hit a girl.<G> I thought it very interesting that, when Urs left Vachon in his demented state, she went to see Nick and not LaCroix. Perhaps LC's reaction to her and Vachon at the beginning of the ep put her off? Or is there just something about Nick that attracts damsels in distress? A nice contrast with Tracy -- both blondes ask what is wrong and who wounded him. Urs goes to get help and Tracy stays to comfort him. The scene where Vachon is kneeling down in front of Tracy as she holds a stake to his heart -- this was so familiar, like I have seen the pose in a painting or something. It was almost like the 'classic' marriage proposal -- down on one knee -- but it was so much holier, like a humble worshipper praying to the Madonna. Was anyone else struck by this? Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? I would like to solicit opinions on what Tracy said to Vachon during his death scene. She mumbles and I am not sure I believe what the closed captioning says. V: "Tracy? T: <mumble mumble> V: "Wish me luck." Is it "I love you" "Javier" "I'm here" or something else? ObWeird FK Comment: I have *seen* the final LC/Nick scene before -- I don't know how or where, but I *have* seen it! Time to rant about Nick the BRICK! I am so mad at this guy! How dare he take away Tracy's memory of Vachon's death -- has this guy never heard of closure? He thinks it will be easier if Tracy thinks Vachon just moved on, but it won't be -- anyone remember Nat's reaction to Nick's attempt to slip away without telling her in 'Black Buddha'? If Tracy has half the feelings for Vachon which she displayed when hugging and comforting him when she first arrived at the church, then she will react the way Apache wrote her in "But You Can't Make Him Drink." *I* would much rather *know* that he is dead than to *think* that he didn't care enough to stay. And yet, *the Brick* allows her to remember the existance of vampires. <Hello? McFly? Is there anyone in there?> It was pretty obvious that LC could make her forget about the existance of vampires if he wanted to, but nooooo -- "That was his gift to her; we have no right to take that away." So, leave her with the knowledge that might get her killed by the Enforces (and what a thoughtful gift it was, too -- remind me *not* to tell you when my birthday is), yet take away the comfort of knowing Vachon didn't jilt her. Better to make her forget everything, or nothing and let her know that Nick is a vampire and that Nat knows, so at least those two can commisserate. I sure hope Nat bops him one good when she finds out what he's asked LC to do! Now about the duration of the ep -- one night only, right? So, how long did it take for Nick to recover from Divia's attack? He showed up at the Raven in pretty short order, it seemed to me, looking none the worse for wear. And *why* was LC so surprised when Divia told him Nick was dead? Couldn't he feel the connection or lack thereof? Or had he just been too preoccupied to notice? Bonnie (callalily@l.......) X X X X X X X X I don't think I could possibly say anymore than what has been said already. I agree with just about everyone's take on the ep, and the emotion is very, very high. I do want to answer (was it Bonnie) who seemed so upset with Nick's having Tracy forget that Vachon died. Do you really think it would be easier for her to sleep nights with the memory of Vachon impaling himself on the stake in her hands? I don't think so. She cared about him, and made the statement that she really didn't think they would work because the "evil" she felt in him scared her, so it's not as if she would feel hurt for long that he left. I'm sure if he was going to bother to plant that it was time for Vachon to move on, he would plant that they had a fitting farwell so there would be closure. I know if I cared for someone at all, I wouldn't want to remember them dying in front me for any reason, and I would welcome being made to forget. It's the same theory I have for funeral homes. The last memory I want of a person is a happy one, when they were alive, not looking at them laid out unnaturally in a coffin. Some folks say it's necessary for some kind of "closure", I don't think so, it just continues to haunt me. So that would be Vachon.... and the grave robber? ;) I've got a totally unfounded theory as to how Nick might have survived. (Hey, I was an English major; all we do is come up with totally unfounded theories. ;) We all noticed the lovely symbolism with his head lying on the sun. And we remember LaCroix' statement that the sun symbol on the sarcophagus kept Divia in check. And you would have had to have been watching with the sound turned down if you didn't get that Divia was supposed to be "Evil" with a capital E. What if the same symbolism that repelled Divia gave Nick strength to fight back? I'd like to think that all his years of striving more or less determinedly toward mortality would have some effect on him. So, in that case, maybe LaCroix was right. What an emotional buffet, jeez! Self-fulfilling prophecy: I thought it was a nice three-way parallel in that Divia killed her master, Lacroix killed his master, then Nick killed (temporarily!) *his* master. THANK YOU, whoever wrote this ep, for giving us a little continuity here. Now I can understand, in my own mind anyway, why LC and Nick's relationship has been so stormy. I mean, LC probably didn't have a lot of faith in the Parent-Child relationship, not after knowing what Divia did to her "parent" and then what he turned right around and did to *his*. You get to believe something so much that you begin to act in subconscious ways to make it a reality. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Maybe he believed all along -- could not believe otherwise, given his experience -- that Nick would turn on him one day. Sigh. Gawd, what a great relationship. But I can see where things go back to the "way they were". I mean, it's hard to erase almost 2000 years of baggage! I can see where LC would either distance himself or do something characteristically wicked. A part of me even WANTS it to happen that way. However, another part of me, the Unnamed Faction part, wants the two of them to rent a condo together and set up house. I agree with Bonnela about Nick's request to whammy Trace into thinking Vachon had just skipped town is poorly thought out. A gal needs closure! Trust me on this one! All my boyfriends skip town for some reason, and it just BITES! Anyway, I also agree with Dotti that letting her remember that she was holding the stake that killed Vachon is a bad idea. I'm hoping LC will utilize his newfound sensitivity (the Wicked Cousin in me shudders) to make Tracy think that Vachon staked himself. It's a good compromise. I'm still tingly. Does the tingly thing go away after a while? If NB doesn't get the Gemini for this truly inspiring performance, then something is screwy with the universe. It was just... perfect. You people might have made decisions in my absence. ;) >(Can I start a LaCroix/Divia faction, or is that just too sick??) Well, yes, it's sick, but who cares? ;) Do it anyway. I think it should be called "Embers" in honor of Diane Shea's fic by the same name. She posted a story a couple weeks ago that almost parallels Divia's seduction scene in AtA. The scene becomes even more poignant for me when LaCroix agrees to leave Tracy's memories of the existance of vampires intact as Nick asked him to. This was a father and son who cared for each other, who NEEDED each other. It was a wonderful scene. Other things I noticed: The scene with Nick and Divia at the loft. The look on Nick's face as he tells her "You've come her to kill me." It's the, I know a secret kind of look. I think he knew he would be injured but had already realized he could survive. He didn't even vamp out during the struggle like Urs did. And the ending shot with Nick unconscious on the painting of the sun, man oh man oh man oh man, what wonderful imagery. Kudos to Jon Cassar! To Nigel, be prepared for another Gemini pal. What a performance. I believe the best for this character yet. Loved the range of emotions. Loved especially, the scenes in the precinct with Reese, Tracy and in the holding cell. If there was comedic relief, Nigel provided it. Throughout the whole ep I laughed, shouted, cried and whispered encouragement. All because of the riveting performance from this very talented actor, and this for a character I have worked very hard to dislike (I am a Knightie after all). The scene between Nick and Nat in the morgue made sense to me. Nick reassured Nat with that touch to the face, Nat shared her concern with her words and her expression. What was left unspoken was as telling as what was said. It was a precious moment. Vachon and Tracy-- I don't get the scene in the car when Tracy pronounces her understanding of the 'evil' in Vachon. Where did that come from? There wasn't any perkiness in that. I understand her thinking that there is a simularity between Vachon and LaCriox, but why not Nick? She said in MBiaV that Nick is like Vachon in a lot of ways, yet she had never made the leap to vampire with Nick, and did almost instantly with LaCroix. I don't think she trusts her own instincts. The emotion of the death scene in the church was a bit subdued, I thought. Tracy shed more tears at her disappointment in Vachon in BB than she did at his death. I am sorry to see Vachon go, though. Divia. The continuity with the tone of her character was wonderful. She felt menacing in AMPH, and the menace was carried forward very well. She had a cold, calculating menace. A true daughter of LaCroix, "amplified a hundred times". Interesting that LaCroix had only three individuals in his life close enough to him to warrant killing before he was 'alone'. I guess that's all for now. Wonderful stuff, this. One more <heavy sigh>. Carrie, Slovenly Knightie CKrumtum@g.......
