But then, when's the last time you saw a cow "give in gracefully" No prey gives in gracefully (or it gets wiped out fast!)-- that doesn't mean the predator is either "evil" or morally wrong. Christina K.: >children of Lacroix! No guessing how old she is, but I'll be she's older >than Janette. Now, correct me if I'm wrong (like I have to *ask*! <g>), but why are we assuming she's older? I have to rewatch the ep again (on many, many different fronts), but was there some comment that indicated that? [If not, she could well be younger-- only 400 years, maybe?-- and simply not have met Nick before.] And did we see any indication that LC _wasn't_ royally p*ssed off at Problem Child for killing Chip-off-the-old-block Daughter? Just because he's apparently forgiven Nick by 1996 doesn't mean Nick didn't catch hell for it at the time ;-) And I want to say something in <gasp> Tracy's defense-- when it comes to not recognizing "N. Chevalier" as a past name of Nick's. Fun as it was to groan as she almost- didn't-quite-is-she-isn't-she-gonna-make-the-connection, I can't blame her for it. There are a lot of people out there with similar names. And you've got to remember, because she (thinks she) knows all about vampires and she has "proof"-- see BB2-- that her partner _isn't_ one, it would take something really obvious to make her see it (and I'm not getting into whether that's already happened or not! ;-). "Chevalier" is *obvious* to us, as it was to Vachon, because we know Nick _has_ past names. Even if Tracy made the translation, I can see it being perfectly legitimate for her to respond with "Hey Nick! Isn't that weird. He had the same name as you." Face it, it's not that uncommon a name, and Tracy was definitely _not- operating from a "the past killer was a vampire, therefore he may very well *still be around someplace*" perspective. Had she made that critical mental connection at any other point, then I agree, she should have gotten it. Deb asks: > So I didn't feel compelled to shred this one. Or even to throw socks > at the TV. (Dianne, do you think I am getting soft in my old age?). Could be, dearest... could be. <g> As for me, I'm going to have to rewatch this one tonight because I was apparently watching an alternate reality episode last night (was I feverish and didn't know it???) in which the constant repetition of the flashback scenes _really_ got on my nerves and slowed the story way down to almost yawn-level. :( Dianne Dianne la Mercenaire... -*- <cat.goddess@p.......> -*-"We must be powerful, beautiful, and without regret."-*- ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 5 May 1996 20:28:12 -0400 From: Karen Kasting <KatrynK@a.......> Subject: Francesca--Bovine Implications Given the description of what human blood does for vampires, does this then mean that every time Nick drinks down cow's blood he has all manner of insights into bovine memory and experience? However, living in "America's Dairyland", I had images of Janette (or Nick) taking a mouthful of cow and getting a "flashback" to having the milking machine clamped on one cold winter morning... <ouch!> However, I lean toward the idea (for no particular reason) that the 'memories' fade with time. Just that it was one of those scenes which are lovely to look at but tell very little). Editing, the cuts between times periods = <~fingers to lips 'magnifico!' kiss noise~> The breathing track in the background was a good touch but got me worried about what my suite mates in the other room would think i was watching. Body: That mating dance of Nick and Franny's was interesting - that open mouthed, Yar!, "Hungry Like a Wolf" thing. And Nick had the hair plumage. Very "Wild America". The actor who played Frank - may i commend him and his parents. That's a great instrument, that voice. Like a lighter James Earl Jones or Lurch. Very nice. If i had woofers hooked up to my TV i could have better scared my suite mates. Nat wouldn't have ruled out a *man* wearing lipstick. i was surprised she exclusively referred to the then-unknown perp as "she". Right off i thought Frank could have put on lipstick. There weren't any other characters besides the doctor and this didn't feel like a "Dark Knight" where you have no idea whatshisnamehospitalemployee guy even exists until part 2. Was a little thing but i was very disappointed in Nat. Come on. 'Men'. Don't forget all those *other* valued lingerie customers. <le sigh> LC's beautiful. Now, yes, i had a shrunken tub of ice cream before me and, once again, my usually arrow-straight sleep schedule was disrupted but my head was still pretty clear for this scene... i tell you, Nick grew slack-jawed and started staring, the set was suddenly real bright and trinkety, and then !BOOM! - there was LC in froufrou collar tame enough to ignore and a smart, dark jacket - all smooth curved lines. <sigh> Beautiful. Nick had Frankenstein hair but it was a turbulent time, he was an unruly kid and i was happily distracted, at least for a moment. Nat on this "woman's" motivation for killing: "Highly repressed sexuality." <looks at Nick> Of course *we'd* have CD put a little something extra in that look. Not that Nick would see if. Maybe if we gave Nat posterboard graphic displays in bright colours, computer-designed slides, and a pointer stick for a multimedia presentation on her ticking clock. Think he'd get it? Maybe if we promised to serve refreshments at the end for those who followed along. "All right, then. What did we learn?" "That you are sexually frustrated and have no social life because you're waiting for me?" "Very good. Here's a garlic pill and a protein shake to wash it down." Note to extras casting director: recruit the local high school chamber orchestra and have those four 'musicians' mingle in the precinct scenes. The poor guys probably didn't have a tape going that they could play-sinc to. Never agree to be a musician extra unless they've got a tape going (and will guarantee in writing - notarized, dated, non-refundable deposit - that what's on the tape will be what's on the soundtrack for that moment. And that they will match it during dubbing). Okay, Nick is going up to compliment the violinist and i'm cringing, i'm cringing, "Don't say 'Thank you, Mister Mozart...', don't say it..." <whew> All clear. Of course, once she said "Faubert" (uh, saw the name in the end credits and promptly forgot it, Faubeur? Forgot. Will check later), i immediately started racking my brain for names of famous violinists from the 18th Century (for $500, Alex). Blast this show. i'm never going to be able to relax during a flashback introductions again. Fran's dark eyes and white hair - like the recent Hellraiser. Spooky, spooky. Those are horror show eyes that would bleed and water if i ever saw a pair. Love it. Would have been *really* grotesque if Fran, LC, and Nick were all powder and caked white skin with fat, black, beetle-like beauty marks - one on each of their faces - cheek, nose, eyelid. Guess grotesque wasn't in the plans, dagnabit. Frank's tripled "I know who he is": Now this is what i love about certain directors (no, i'm not kissing up, hush it) - the ones who seem more enthusiastic about the craft, being newer to calling the shots camera-wise. Experimentation, quirkiness, trying unconventional angles and cuts, none of that straight-forward, drama of the week fiddlefaddle. i like seeing the *art* in directing every once in a while (and it doesn't just have to be for a "vampire" episode. Some of Fallen Idol's present day scenes were nice and spiced up - the stalled Caddy in the street, near the end, for example). That's one of the reasons i loved Ger's first ep so much - the atmosphere he put into it, the things he tried, techniques he used. Not for the whole ep, of course. If i wanted to be confused, i'd rent a foreign film. Tracy is incorportated fine in this one. So far. Poor Frank. They're gonna know you took it. Steal something else, come on, be a good thief who cares about the job he's doing. You gotta care about it, Frank, otherwise you might as well be honest and, idaknow, sue the tapes off of her. The morning after: i love the way Ger says "Francesca". It's not a name, it's a pelvic thrust: "frranCHEscah..." Everybody call me that now, i wanna cool name. But you gotto say it right other wise you might as well use the high, nasalled "Ehreeka" that i so love, adore and thank my dear, sadistic parents for. Violinist is drunk at the "height of his talent". Oh no!! No!!! Ack, ack, they *know* the people they drink! Ack, no!! All those people they drank who were peasants and who toiled and strained all their lives, the diseased and sick who were rotting inside and out, the maniacs, the insane, the neurotics and psychotics, the spacy empty-heads and the studious exploding ones... There'd be *no* temptation for me to drink from *anyone* at all 'cause i'd perpetually be worried about where this guy had been and 'how he felt about it', ick. Ack, ack! Pain, suffering, ignorance, anger... drinking people nowadays, no problem, but i would have been starving back then. And the battlefield? LC's "free food", sure, but i wouldn't take it! i'm okay, no one needs to respond to that part. It was just my finger-jerk reaction to it. It's a wonderful concept, just one that (like the whole Near Death thing) we'll be expected not to think about for future and past episodes. What's wrong with a story arc and canons?! Show it out of order, i don't care! Oh, TPTB won't check. Go on, live a little. And Vachon experiences nothing as he sips from his bottle. No, if he were feeling/thinking/taking in something, we'd see it. If he reacts to "Chevalier", he's going to react to a suddenly onset feeling on the night he lost his virginity as a 17 year old Victorian governess to her respected, 50-something-physician-and-father-of-two employer. (Hm. i do like the vague parallel between drinking from someone and "feeling"/"being" them and past lives, tho.) Now 1st season Nick, i could see this fitting in. Remember those dramatic swigs and that orgasmic "Ahhhhhh, now *that's* a drink!" expression? Frank/Fran at the window meld/melt - Ah! Nice! Would you two team up for a horror movie sometime, please? Mr. B and Ms. Horvath? A ghost story, please? How about it? 'Nicholas Chevalier. The man coveted by many but played only by a select few: Wyn Davies. Gere. Keanu.' i can't hear the name "Chevalier" and not think of Keanu "Ahye say, is the cahstle fah?" Reeves. Actress who played the doctor - liked her. Not overdone. Not underdone. Not runny and getting all over the toast side of the plate. And *especially* not a raving professional woman or weepy, break-down one. Francesca on art appreciation through plasma suckage - loved that. And think of it, you'd never have to study. Just sip and know. But i'd have to do it *right before* the exams. A little Dali, a little Picasso, a little Renoir. Or for that pesky biology class, a little katydid, a little chimpanzee, a little cow... Wouldn't work for physical science unless you knew some famous physical scientists (i'm thinking of geology class here). 'Cause no matter how much vampiric strength i have i'm not going to squeeze anything i can use from that rock. Hm. Maybe a little professor... Fran to Nick: "You can play as [Faubert] does"... No, no, i don't care. i don't want to separate single eps from a series. These Intense Discussions on LC and love, the nature of evil, Nick and his relationship/oops no relationship with Nat, what he "owes" her, if anything - they're at once wonderful, thought-provoking, and absolutely pointless (tho i try to participate if i can!) because no FK writer has ever talked to another as far as i can see (not counting the team of Bedard and Lalonde). Janette must have been quite the little entertainer during that False Witness flashback. What if Nick had drunk from the antagonist in Capitol Offense? He'd have lost that "clew" and gotten a cool drawl. Oh, my - and LC in "Bad Blood". Sandra thinks Uncle is bad enough. Now imagine him suddenly channeling Jack the Ripper. Well, without the upset stomach and diarrhea. Nick on Frank: "Sexual freedom is the freedom to kill." That's a quote to petrify my mother with. Sexuality is bad enough... LC learns about the newly-returned Franny, Nick leaves, then LC clicks on the mike. i want a comedic ep where LC forgets to turn it off, Nick comes over and talks vampire, and all of Toronto is freaked out of their mind. Imagine Reese spewing out his Chinese food. Imagine Tracy crashing her dad's car. Imagine all those mentally-imbalanced people musing over conspiracy theories in their rat-packed apartments (the bulk of The Nightcrawler's audience) suddenly rising to arms, with audio proof that the goverment was, indeed, up to no good with that alien technology they gathered at Roswell. Um, i hope LC's monologue to his listening audience didn't need our attention. 'Cause i spent mine writing that down. Nick: "The evil in me will affect someone else..." Nick really loves to hate himself, doesn't he? He's like those annoyingly pouty people. He must be doing it for attention. Pretend he's invisible, Nat. Maybe then you two can talk about something other that how damned he is. He's not evil, poor kid. Man can't tell the difference between true, murderous evil, and simply annoying us to death. Someone who tries so hard to be good (good at being repetitive and good at ignoring encouragement and sunny smiles) isn't "float around and find somebody through which to murder" evil. Enough. "Hope we find him before these memories make him kill again." So it's now 'Make me forget before I kill again!', now, is it? (Sorry. A 'stop before i kill again' joke.) Vachon holding his guitar to the flicker of candlelight (and pose of pin-up calendar). If he drank from Les Paul, do you think we'd finally get a good song out of that boy? Frank in drag at the the doctor's door: Brilliant. The actor, Mr B, the wardrobe mistress/master, makeup artist, whoever decided he should even look that way, Gillian for putting him there. Listen - i do not get scared. i haven't seen *everything* but i do know that TV never scares me. But they got an impulsecomment out of me - one of those reactionary mutterings. i'm *very* impressed. Ger: "Compo sit". What are you saying? No, it's not working, try again, Ger. Ger: "Compass it". No, i don't know. i need more. Try taking a deep breath first. Or write it down. Oh, comPAHzit. 'Composite', got it. Now, don't make an issss...ue out of it. Doesn't need a trip to the la...BOREatory to help me figure it out. Don't let me throw you off your shhhhhh...edule. (Just playing "spot the Brit". Don't mind me.) Fuller is ditsy but come on, fellow, you had to have noticed the woman was REALLY tall. There's tall and there's TOWERING. Plot device not to have Fran(k) kill the doctor there, to have him/her fattening them up. It's okay, just irking. Fran jumping <boing!>/landing into the scene with Nick and the caged musicians: Hey, that's what *we* do in our home movies! Anyway, if Mr B sees fit to put it in, i won't say another word about how silly you looked, 400 years old, coffin-moldy, and with that special spring in your step.) i thought that the possession/past life thing... Well, okay. i'm glad that it was made clear that this was a whole 'nother person who was killing, not Frank (in a sense Fran is Frank but that's going to mess me up so i'm going to ignore it) because i remember the uproar over "Silence of the Lambs" and how the fact that a sort-of transvestite was linked to murderous, violent perversion. Many people questioned the way that the two were connected. But Gillian kept the situation clear and i'm very glad of that. (But, anyway, FK has made just about every type of person a murderous psychopath so i don't have to worry about transvestites being singled out <g>) Tag: Tracy's regression: please don't show it. 'Nuff said. Secondly, with all the thanks going to Gillian and Nigel, there was something that I liked about this episode that has not been mentioned. The simplicity. It brought some of the integrity back to the show that made us all fall in love with it. Maybe being under budget took away the distractions that had crept in and brought the focus back to the characters. It really reminded me of 2nd season FK. LC's booth was in the dark, while on the air. The *new trappings* of the Raven were not to be seen. It somehow seemed more fitting for him to be sitting in that dark room with the blue light doing his Nightcrawler thing. I won't mention the leather hiphugger girl that was wandering into the scene when Nick was leaving. Everyone seemed to be having bad hair days (except LC). Has anyone noticed how nice Tracey's hair and makeup were looking before the new episodes started and in this episode, it was back to looking like she did at the beginning of the season... a little mussed and not so slick. Even Vachon's hair was a bit flat. Too much Pert-Plus I guess (a joke from fanfic...I think) ;) But, I like the simplicity of the whole show better. The Vachon and Tracey scene in the church only required a couch, candles, the guitar and darkness. Oh yes, and their drinks! The flashback sets were the most detailed except for Nat's office. But, it has always been basically unchanged. Also, did anyone else really love it when Tracey hit Vachon on the shoulder when trying to get some info out of him? It seemed so natural and personal. Like really good friends... I liked that. Well, there's much more...but I'll go back to lurkers mode... Can you just imagine, then, the next time somebody tells Nick to "get a life!" he'll say he's working on it; Lacroix might respond with "Fine -- I'll take yours!" being silly (hey, it's my birthday, I'm entitled!) And what's a vampire to do? Interview all potential lunches? Stick to children and infants? Sounds like a capability with a lot of downsides. Maybe range-fed cattle are the way to go. (That stanchion flashback would be a good one, though <eg>). Incidentally, I'm a working poet and I guarantee my feelings and memories are as nasty as anyone else's if not moreso, as a few people on this list would've been perfectly happy to attest recently. Nice try, but really -- over-romanticizing working artists yet again. Cows are nicer, really. And golden retrievers are complete and total sweeties... where's that Perry? Over on jadfe, right? There was an interesting opportunity for a line on that in Francesca -- when Vachon's explaining the connoisseurship of blood to Tracy, and sipping from his bottle as his thinks about it (as she glugs away on her can of orange soda, a nice touch, as someone remarked). If I were Tracy, I would have looked at that bottle with new interest -- "so who's that?" <gesturing at the bottle>. Maybe the bottled blood is a blend, as whiskey usually is, multiple malt -- and a 'vintage' of a single interesting person, carefully preserved, would have the same allure to connoisseurs as single malt whiskey does to that species of tippler. Perhaps this explains Vachon and Urs staring blankly into their glasses at the Raven (TG) -- no images left in the blood, no images transfered to their minds. Kinda gives new meaning to all those old horror flicks where 'the mindless undead' are roaming the streets. Thanks, Ms. Horvath, Mr. Bennett and the rest of the cast. The actor, Maurice Dean Wint, who played Frank was superb. I knew I was going to like at least at one thing about the show with that first hypnosis scene. Deborah says: >Oh and Nigel, thanks so much for that in depth exploration of the guitar. >:-) I could probably build one myself after that. You know, my eyes just kinda slid to what was _behind_ the guitar. What a ... lingering shot. I know. I'm so baaaad. (And you are too, Deborah <g> Build a guitar, indeed.) Andrew comments: >One big complaint: [Tracy] being the musician reincarnated was >interesting, and it is plausible that after all these years she wouldn't >recognize Nick as the contact was brief, but shouldn't they have set this >up in previous episodes by having [Tracy] display musical talent? The theory on reincarnation is that we don't remember, in general, the skills we had or the people we've met in past lives. We may occasionally get that deja vu feeling about someone or something, bur rarely will clear memories come to the fore. The idea is that we are learning another lesson or prosessing a problem created in a past life, in a new situation with new personalities. Otherwise, what's to stop Mozart, say, in his next life saying, "Oh, darn, I never did get a chance to finish that Requiem. Hey, Mom, do we have any blank score sheets?" You're supposed to be moving forward, not doing the same-old-same-old. As to the wonderful notion that a person's essense is contained in their blood, I know a number of fanfic writers have held that for a long time. I've heard that the spirit lingers by its recently deceased body for three days. Perhaps that includes the blood. I wonder if that is what Janette and LaCroix's "special vintage" is: very fresh blood mixed with very old wine. "It's young, but it has an earthy, robust taste and it finishes quite well." --LaCroix, TGVP Sound like anyone you know?
