With all the bits of coninuity we've been fed recently, I just
assumed that this was a nod to Nick's memory loss in "Night in
Question." He <has> been getting along better with LaCroix,
and, to me, Nat's line and his reaction indicates that he may
still not remember everything from his past. The LaCroix he
interacts with in the present is much less antagonistic, so much
so that if he's still Not Quite Right in the Head (no brick jokes,
please!!!), he may not automatically equate "evil" with "LaCroix"
anymore.
*Really* intriguing episode, and well-directed. Too bad Ger didn't
take his shirt off in those love scenes, though. ;) And the ending
with Tracy was just plain silly. That was the only point during
the episode where I did groan and say, "Oh, come <on>" at the TV.
Nat was definitely looking at Nick with intense longing, and I
thought he was giving her the same look while explaining what
feeding is/was like for him. Definitely thought he was trying to
convey to her why she was such a temptation to him, and why he
shouldn't give in to that.

Gotta come out of lurkdom to comment on this one.....
I knew this would be good - I love Gillian's stories. They're always
thought provoking and delve more deeply into the philosophical questions
than the purely *cop* stories. So thanks, again, Gillian, and thanks to
Nigel for some insightful directon.
Tracy and Vachon: So glad to see Vachon again. I've even grown to like
Tracy. I particularly loved the absurdity of their friendship. (Come on
over and have a drink with me, OK?) She's drinking her soda pop; he's
drinking his blood-in-the-bottle. ROTFL! Hurray for BB's expressions when
Tracy pushes on about Nick Chevalier. Love it.
Music: I love the music during their (T & V) second conversation.
Wonderful! I think it was Carrie who mentioned that it came from AA. I
immediately ran to the VCR to find it. I haven't found it yet. Carrie, do
you remember the scene?
What a haunting, musical moment.
Houdini: Yup. Houdini Night on TV. Here in Houston we get HL right
before FK. Reminds me of the Moonlight Sonata night in the past when that
was played on both shows in one night. Also the week they shared guest
stars - that was a good one, too!
I loved Nat's expression when Nick described the life force in the blood.
Oooooh. Naked longing, someone said. Absolutely. Take me, take me, she
cries out. Nat seems to leave her scientist persona for a moment and let
herself get caught up the romanticism of the moment. And Nick pretends not
to notice. Of course, he notices.
Ending: Loved the fact that Tracy's probably the musician reincarnated.
As a believer in that sort of thing, that would make lots of sense. I
believe that we sometimes find ourselves interacting with people that we've
known before, worked with before, loved before. We might not remember any
of it - I'm not sure that it even matters. I think what matters is what
we do *now* when we're here. Yet, I think soul paths intertwine again and
again. It would be so interesting to pursue that theme and check out when
Nat and Nick met before - or when Tracy and Vachon met before. Fanfic
anyone?
To sum it up - this episode had me talking out loud! Yes! A really good
one. I can't believe this is ending. I can't believe this is ending!

I think this was definitely one of the best FK eps ever produced. Knowing it
was a Gillian Horvath ep, I had very high expectations and I was not
dissappointed. She captured the essence of what it means to be a vampire.
There was so much I liked about this ep. I'll try to restrain myself, but
I have a feeling this is going to be a long post. (but I promise I wont
mention Nietzsche!!)
Souls: Do vampires have them?? I think this was the big issue. I seem to
recall in a previous ep. LC told Nick that vamps did NOT have souls. But
when Nick comes to him with the reincarnation theory he dosen't dismiss it as
a possibility. Has LC changed his views over the years? I thought the
Nightcrawler monologue was one of the best ever. (and did you catch the
close up on those lips??? I almost had to get up and take a cold shower) I
won't repeat the whole monologue, but I like the end where he says "Perhaps
to be immortal in this way, is an eternal judgement, a true life sentence
from which we sinners can never be absolved." Well, according to the
Buddhists, that is exactly what reincarnation is. Life is suffering, and if
you don't get it right you just keep coming back, over and over, until you
manage to reach nirvana.(simplified version) Do you think Buddha could have
used a happy pill? What a downer! Anyway, what I concluded from this is
that in admitting there is the possibility for vampires to re-incarnate, LC
is admitting that vampires may in fact have souls. ie: "Her soul has him..."
The bloodlust: The scene between Nick and Nat was riveting to say the least.
Finally he opens up to her. Now she can truly understand why it's "such a
tough habit to break." I loved the look on her face. I think it was much,
MUCH, more than scientific fascination. Put yourself in her shoes...how
would you have felt? Personally, I would have insisted that he bring me
across right there on the spot! "Imagine if you could know someone's soul
just by sharing their blood...." Sign me up! I know people have discussed
the option of vampires surviving on bags of donated blood, etc, so they dont
have to kill, but dosen't that defeat the whole purpose of being a vampire???
Where is the eroticism in that?? I don't know about you but I don't think
it would be very sensual to suck on a blood bag! Tracy actually had a good
point when she said killing was part of a vampire's nature. Why do we feel
compelled to impose human standards on beings that are not human??? Sounds a
bit egotistical to me. As if humans are the ultimate authority on these
matters. I think not.
Vachon: Well at least they used him. Liked the trippy music and the
reflection of the candles on his guitar. Very gothy. (is that a word?? it
is now) Dosen't have a good poker face though. Wouldn't want to take him to
Vegas.
Tracy: A violinist in a former life? And now she's a ditzy cop. She must
have done something really bad in between lives! And if she was there as
Faubert, why didn't she remember Nick??
Frank: Wow, this guy was super creepy!! What a demonic voice. I kept
waiting for his head to spin around! When he showed up at the Dr's door
dressed as Francesca w/ the knife I swear I was under the coffee table! The
guy was good!
Fav. lines:
LC: "Harry Houdini had a rather nifty trick with handcuffs...."
(As do I , but thats for the OTHER list...you know the one)
Nat: "Because he's EVIL?" LOL!! Who's been reading our list.....
Worst line: Tracy: "Go swallow a sock..." typical Tracy
Sex scenes: I just love it when Nick is vampy! Does this mean I have Dark
Knightie leanings?? Don't tell Uncle! I thought the scene where he is in
bed and she puts her fingers in his mouth and he giggles...etc....was very
erotic. (Why can't LC get scenes like that???) But the hair...(Nick's)
um...it was pretty scruffy, in fact I think I noticed a few dreadlocks
sprouting in the back. eww.
I liked a lot of the effects too.
The slo-mo flashbacks were great. I also like the part where Frank is on the
couch and says "I know who he is!" and the camera does 3 quick zoom-ins.
Don't know what that is called but they do it on Homocide all the time and I
think it is very effective in making the scene more dramatic. I liked the
use of shadows and light. As a photographer I instinctively notice things
like that in TV shows. Ok, so I'm weird! As if you didn't know...
Questions:
1. Why is LC smirking when he says "Nicolas Chevalier"? Did he just pull the
name out of his you know what?
2.Why isn't LC pissed off about Nick killing one of his spawn?
3.I knew Francesca was going to munch on Faubert immediately...so why didn't
Nick pick up on it? I mean she asked him to *dinner* and then immediately
took him to hear Faubert....Was he expecting a filet mignon? I guess this
would fall under the brick theory.
Ok...had enough??? ;)

Not really a spoiler, just a question.
The actress who played Francesca looks awfully familiar to me. I think
she's been in FK before, but maybe not (it could just be that she's one
of the only 37 actors in Canada and I've seen her in other things).
I thought at first it was Larissa Lapchinski, who played Emily Weiss in
last season's Stranger than Fiction, but the credits list Maria
Syrgiannis as Francesca. Can anyone help me? It's driving my a little
crazy, not being able to place her.
Talk about deja vu! :)
p.s. And why wasn't Maria listed in the beginning credits? I thought her
role was as bit as that of the therapist, and SHE got mentioned at the
beginning.

Interesting thought. Although, what if the choice only occurs when there is a
chance of being revived? A wooden stake through the heart seems pretty
permanent for a vamp (unless, of course, you are LaCroix). I had the
impression that the choice offered in ND only happened because there was a
chance for Nick to return each time to the world of the living. I don't think
that there is a choice given when that chance doesn't exist.
Francesca certainly did die suddenly. I wouldn't call it murder though. I
think the comfrontation lends itself to a battle of vamps with Nick as the
winner. I don't think he ever intended to kill her until she went ballistic
at Nick setting her captives free.
Perhaps it is the unfinished business that caused the soulful feedback loop.
Kind of like a spiritual rift that can't be sealed until there is closure for
Francesca. Thoughts?

I've been thinking about this a lot. Maybe he just didn't like her
very much. I mean, he could have brought her across in a moment of
passion and not had any particular attachment to her.

Francesa, a daughter after LaCroix's heart in some ways -- but to live in
the same place for 400 years strikes me as rather dangerous. Avignon is not
exactly the boonies -- during part of that period, it was the Alternate
Vatican, for heaven's sake! Wonder how she managed it? Wealth and
eccentricity would not be enough, IMO.
Also, wouldn't LaCroix also be disturbed by the lack of discretion? The
"Toast of Paris" accepts an invitation to visit La Comtesse... and is never
seen again. Hmmm. Arrogance is fine, indiscretion is not (from LC's POV).
My compliments to the actor who played "Frank". An excellent job. I've
know people with "gender confusion". His gestures and movements were right
on the mark. Lovely job.
Nick and Nat in the morgue (conversation about blood): Oh, my Lord and
Lady! When I read that comment abstracted, I'd've *sworn* it was a
Vachon-to-Tracy description. To hear that out of *Nick's* mouth...<gasp>!
I don't blame Nat for her look of facination. That's more than she's
learned about the *reality* of vampirism all season!! Now, was it just me,
or was that look on her face also saying, "This might be a *lot* more
complex than I ever thought!"?
I don't understand, especially at this point in time, why Natalie would draw
the line at reincarnation -- hell, she's seen ghosts. Isn't this just sort
of the next step on the line?
I don't think, BTW, that reincarnation is just for the evil. I think they
are beginning to probe just how much more complex the whole Universe is,
here. Tracy's reincarnation (don't have any problems with her not being
musical, BTW; Frank wasn't feeling "gender confused" until 3 months ago) is
more of the "I'm not finished here!" variety. And the conversation on evil
between Nat and Nick -- he got handed a bit of a crowbar on *his* worldview,
too!
All in all, this one's top mark. The murder was simple, but what was behind
it was *COMplex*! This is what FK *should* have been all along. Lovely.
Wonder how long it'll take Trace to figure out that "Nicholas Chevalier"
could Anglicize to "Nick Knight" in... dare I say it? a heartbeat? <EG>
The contrast of the careful conversations between Nick and Nat (although
this was, as I noted before, the deepest I've seen in a while) and the
casualness of Tracy and Vachon's is very nice, too. Gods, I love looking at
that boy!<SIGH> She sure is handling "vampire info" a lot better these days
-- real progress. Nice. And he is beginning to get really backed into a
corner on keeping Nick's secret. Heh heh. I'm waiting for him to throw up
his hands and confess all. It looked like he was about two minutes away
from it here. <VEG> Oh, the fanfic opportunities.
Well, enough ramble. What fun!

Actually, Nick is an artist and musician in his own right. What he's giving

That question hit my mind too after LaCroix didn't die in Dark Knight -
however, there is the question of age I suppose. Although older than Nick,
obviously she isn't as old as LaCroix and perhaps could not survive the

Regarding the similarities of the game in GVP and Reese's reference to the
game Manning was playing with him in JD, John wrote:

I caught that little reference too. I thought that not only was Nick seduced
by the GVP game, but everyone was so brushing him off about it that he felt
he was the only one who would bother to look for the clues. Also, there was
a definite time limit in the game (as it was being rewritten as Nick
played). Someone else probably would have been given a new game without all
the klews.

Reese was probably happy both his detectives were working
together on the same wavelength for a change, but don't you think
he was wondering just how come both of them were so knowledgeable
about the "vampire myth"? :-)
BTW, that reporter (name failing me at the moment) passed Frank
dressed as woman in the psychiatrist's office and didn't notice anything
at all strange about her (him)? Something tells me this guy doesn't
get a lot of front page bylines or journalism awards for his investigative
skills or his powers of observation.

I have not seen the whole episode, just some scenes here and there, but plan
to watch the entire thing before Monday night.
I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one who thought that Catherine Disher
looked terrific.
I believe the look on Nat's face while Nick was telling her about the
addictive qualities of blood was fascination and had some sensual element to
it. I think she is slowly being drawn to wanting to become a vampire. I
believe this scene did more to help her along that path than any other. I
was hoping for a bit more, but was quite satisfied with what was there.
Thanks, Nigel for lingering on Catherine's face as Ger was talking.
I think Nigel did a terrific job directing the episode! I also think that
this was another of Gillian's excellent scripts!
The only think that made me scream AACCkKKK was Tracy's past life regression
at the end.
I loved the scene with Vachon and Tracy talking about the case. Poor Vachon.
He couldn't say much without blowing Nick's cover.
I couldn't believe it when Tracy said that it was part of a vampire's nature,
like she knew it as a fact. I thought - Nick don't trust her with your
secret. I loved the look Nick gave her which made her quickly cover up her
"factual" statement.
This was one of the best eps of the season. There was not an ounce of fat
anywhere in the story. I really enjoyed how Gillian worked everyone in and
made their scenes important. Nat had more to do than just be the M.E. And
she was also there for more than a scene or two.
What's with the bright pink lipstick on the guys? This isn't the first ep
where I've noticed it either. LC's eyebrows were normal again, not like the
smudged mess they looked like last week.
I did love the part about Tracy knowing it was all in front of her but not
being able to piece it all together. I hope she NEVER figures out Nick's
secret or that Nat knows about vampires. I liked her admiting to Vachon
about being dense.
Tracy was well written in this ep and for once I didn't mind her.
I think Nat was correct to point out that evil is a part of the *human*
condition, that it NEVER goes away. I believe that Nick believes that if he
becomes mortal the evilness will go away.
I did like her remark about LC being evil. We all know she does NOT like or
trust him. I also liked her comment about Francesca being annoyed to see him
again after all these years (or something to that extent).
I thought Nat seemed much happier and content in this ep than in most of this
season. There was none of the crankiness, moodiness, frustration, or however
you want to describe her behavior this season. Thanks, Gillian!!
This was supposed to be a short post, but I guess once I started I found more
to discuss than I thought. I'm sure I'll have more comments once I see the
ep from beg to end.

Warning: The botanist in me is rearing its ugly head yet again....
Nat says that the victim had eaten just a short while before being killed,
which would mean that the acids in the stomach probably did not have enough
time to react with *all* of the food the guy had eaten. If so, then it
would be very easy to identify the type of wine based on the protein strands
present. Wine has different protein strands than does milk, or coffee, etc.
Also, different wines, because they are made from different varieties of
grapes, would have different proteins, and that is how the lab tech could
identity that it was a Merlot; heck, and if the tech really wanted to, he
could probably tell the exact winery it was from based on the mold proteins
present.

I thought that Nat's reaction to Nick's momologue paralleled Tracy's

Go back and compare their facial expressions, especially the eyes. I was
half exprecting Nat to hold out her bare wrist for Nick to sample from by
the end of that sensual scene -- I would have, and I'm not even a Knightie. <g>
I did definately liked this ep, though -- very intense. But I need to try
to re-watch it before I make any further comments, that is, if I can get
past the Vachon scenes without throwing up!

portcullis like that? Unless it was reinforced, or very strong wood
(oak maybe?), I can't think that it would be very strong. But,
for the sake of the plot, it was probably wood. Of course, I also
thought those cages (which were made of metal) were far to easy
for Nick to open that quickly. Just a few nits.
That's the problem with taking a film class in college,
It changes your TV/film watching forever.

The portcullis was an internal structure of a building much older than the
house -- or at least, much less modernized. Oak would not be an uncommon
wood for such an item, and certainly a lot less *work* than forging one. It
was just being used as an internal divider, not an army-stopper, and would
probably be at least as hard as metal for the prisoners to get through,
should they escape. Much of an old castles' internal structures were wood
rather than metal.

great - What happened to GER's makeup. He looks real tired.

Nick stopped killing about one century ago (LYTD). From LC's comments on "in
keeping with your code of the past three-hundred years," we have deduced that
he began feeding *on criminals only* about four centuries ago, say 1592,
which means Nick, in the flashbacks of Francesca, is almost exactly half way
between his decision to kill only "the guilty" and his realization that "we
are the guilty; they are the innocent." Thus, his outrage is consistent.

If so, it's probably a case of "great minds think alike". It happens oftener
than you think. I had a story half-ready to be submitted to a 'zine editor,
when the next issue came out-- with a story whose background was practically
identical to mine! And I'd never talked to anybody involved with the 'zine....
It is a fairly likely occurrence, after all. :)
