"Flight Risk" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2017 07:27:36 -0400 From: Brenda Bell <webwarren@e.......> Subject: "Flight Risk" I started running a thought experiment on how the past 25 years of technology changes may affect our vamps' abilities to use their powers undetected --Security cameras and home automation might make it difficult for a vamp to "whammy" undetected, while most of the on-street traffic cams mean a quick flight could be viewed via live stream and stored in the cloud. The hidden alleyways of a quarter-century ago are perhaps more likely than the open street for business-owned security cameras, which today's crime dramas would have us believe are directly linked into the local law-enforcement network. Unless our vamps are able to temporarily disable these cameras, a quick-flight getaway might entail making it to the roof of a skyscraper and flying rooftop to rooftop. This would entail high-precision flight either along the route of a many-storied fire-tower stairway or, if the stairs were designed with an open center (to see up and down quickly), a high-precision flight up that center opening. --We know that at least some of our vamps are fond of modern technology (except when it gets in the way of a fresh meal). It's been at least fifteen years, maybe more, since GPS location has been embedded in mobile phones in a way that it cannot be disabled. A sudden change in altitude, outdoors, might be another method of detecting something akin to a vampire's flight. One might not think of it unless one was looking specifically for that sort of change, but it's something a group like an anti-vamp NCIS or CSI crew might use. (There's no reason to believe that Enforcers would NOT be on such a crew, especially if that crew was searching down rogue vamps.) Turning off the phone might not work, and if it were always in a RF-blocking pouch, it would be useless for receiving phone calls from the vamp's current social network. --While quick altitude changes might be argued away with "I was playing with mounting it on my drone", the presence of drones being used for both business and pleasure might further clutter the flight environment, posing both detection and injury risks. Drones might pose even greater risks in suburban and rural environments, where there is more room for humans to play with them. Any thoughts on how our vamps might deal with these "flight risks"?
