Subject: Re: Ice Storm Roll Call I lost power for about 12 hours on the 22nd, but fortunately it came back on before it got too cold. The damage to the trees in Toronto however, is severe. I've seen several large trees that are basically now just 15 foot tall stumps. Marg, lurking in the City of the Knight. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jan 2014 08:32:28 -0500 From: Stephanie Kellerman <stephke@i.......> Subject: Re: Ice Storm Roll Call I'm a bit farther south in Louisville, Ky. The temperature is now -1 F. I was in San Diego last week to visit my son, daughter in law and 3 granddaughters. Flew back on Saturday. Glad I didn't try to fly back on Sunday since over 100 flights were cancelled. Also don't let anyone tell you that letting your faucets drip ALWAYS keeps your faucets from freezing. Mine are frozen even doing that. I just hope the don't burst. I will be running to the store for water and hope I don't have to use an ax to pry my door open like I did yesterday. Fortunately I had a fire place in the living room. I moved into that room and waited and waited and waited... for a hydro truck to appear in the neighbourhood. One finally arrived late Friday night. By the time the power came back the temperature in the living room was hovering in the the low 40's. It was probably in the low 30's in the rest of the house. I never wanted to know. Subject: Re: Ice Storm Roll Call All is well in Minneapolis. We are, of course, quite used to low temps. It was -20F on Monday when I went to work, and I had no problems except that I looked like a kid from Southpark in my parka, Sorel boots (thank you, Canada, for such an excellent product), high-tech insulated gloves, and a scarf. Just about everyone was at the office, just a few folks worked from home. Today there are reports of black ice on the roads and there have been lots of spinouts, but it's somewhat warmer (-10F on my car thermometer on my drive in to work). We're almost out of the Arctic Vortex; tomorrow will be fairly normal with a high of 5F, and they're saying 33F on Saturday (heatwave!). This is really nothing---I remember the two-week stretch in the 80s when the temps didn't go above zero. My employer hired a tow truck to orbit the parking lot of the large plant at quitting time to jump-start the cars whose batteries died during the day. My car's tires would get flat on the bottom, and for the first five minutes of my drive home would go "thump-thump-thump" until road friction warmed them up enough to go round again. So yeah, this is just a little cold snap! And here I was thinking of complaining 'cause it was down to 42 degrees about 2 am and if this continued there *might* be a freeze. Living in Phoenix can be such a trial sometimes. ;-) Seriously, it's good to hear people are coming through this o.k. I grew up in Upstate NY, so I do know what cold is and can appreciate what people are going through, and god bless all of you who aren't used to dealing with it.
