Vampires making love was so ambiguous that I don't think in
either case that it made much difference.

I believe that later on in the series it was implied that vampires
could make normal human love, but there would be a tendency
that when climaxing they would bite their partner as part of the
culminating act. Other vampires would survive, but normal
humans might not.

An interesting physiological aspect that I don't think has
been addressed is that the human sexual response system
is essentially hydrolic, and the fluid used is blood. This might
be a problem with vampires. Would the (particularly male)
vampire need to ingest/imbibe a certain amount of blood
first in order for the process to work?

Finally, I think an important perspective is that of the
fan - viewer - reader and just how much he or she
wants to see Nick and Nat get it on. Their attitude
towards the functionality of vampire love-making
is based on this.
