Subject: Why is Schanke partnerless in "Dark Knight"?

Reconsidering "Dark Knight" as I have been, I'm reminded of something that
came up a couple of years ago, when I wrote a story for FK Fic Fest about
Nick's first day on the job at Metro PD. As we all know, he worked in
Homicide for a year or so before the events of "Dark Knight"; and throughout
that period he had no partner, even though Stonetree apparently prefers his
detectives to work in pairs.

Well, I'm sure we can all imagine just *how* Nick went about "convincing"
him to make an exception!

However, in "Dark Knight", Stonetree is faced with a case that has just been
made all the higher profile (Headline: "Vampire Killings!") since the
latest victim is not a homeless person but a security guard at the ROM. So
he decides that he can't just have one guy from the night shift working the
case, and pairs Nick with Schanke so that a day-shift detective can take up
the investigation while Nick's off duty.

This makes perfect sense. Let's face it, although we see Nick interviewing
people in most episodes, he pretty well has to be doing that before
midnight, unless the interviewee is also a night-shifter worker. We don't
get a lot of shots of him ringing and ringing a doorbell until some
bleary-eyed guy opens it in his PJs.

So Stonetree pairs Nick with Schanke. Fair enough: but it *does* imply
that Schanke, too, is currently partnerless.
