Nigel Bennett's thoughts on Last Knight (7) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 2 May 2013 18:53:08 -0400 From: Brenda Bell <webwarren@e.......> Subject: Re: Nigel Bennett's thoughts on Last Knight At 02:14 PM 5/2/2013, Greer wrote: >Thank you for posting this, Allison. At that time, his big *wink* *wink* was that we saw him raise the staff and start the strike move -- but we never saw it actually go through Nick... The idea was that Lacroix would not kill Nick, except in self-defense. Of course, we all used that "never saw it go through" as the basis for our Virtual Fourth Season, as well as a number individual writers' post-LK fiction series. Brenda F. Bell webwarren@e....... It makes a lot of sense and it's great to have a fresh perspective (in my mind) after so many years. Something to consider, as I'm going to be watching the show with someone who's never seen it! My own perspective is that LK was Part I of an end of the season cliff-hanger, and the first episode of the new season would be the Part II conclusion, where it would be sorted out as to what "really" happened and who survived and how. Unfotunately, the new season with its cliff-hanger conclusion never happened. :-( Still, the way it went has given rise to a heck of a lot of rather good fiction carrying on the stories in many several different ways, each interesting in their own ways. From what I understand, USA bought FK because of its success in syndication. Then they immediately set about changing it. Go figure. If only! Actually, the show was definitely cancelled. At the time I couldn't say this on list, but the fact is, the makers of Highlander were concerned that: (a) FK was cutting into their ratings in some markets where they competed. (b) USA wasabout to push FK hard. They'd originally had Ger set to do promotional appearacnes at the national association of tv programmers, and merchandise to go with this. Anyone have the reports from the six list members who went to Vegas to lobby for the show? I have one of the mugs that was being distributed (black glaze, show name, and a mite mark out of the rim), courtesy of one of them, The makers of Highlander essentially blackmailed USA, threatening to pull Highlander and its reruns unless FK was cancelled. USA caved, then was unpleasantly surprised by the mail and email campaign from the fans. It was huge, much bigger than they expected. The cliff-hanger effect is not in the original script. I have a copy somewhere. We were to see the stake come down, and cut to the sun coming up stock footage, with a voiceover by Nigel of the Romeo and Juliet prince's speech at the end, ("A glooming peace .... Go hence to have much speech of this.") Everybody was definitely dead, except LC and the captain. Ger, who was directing, took out everything after "damn you, Nicholas!" and the stake starting to descend. We weren't allowed to see it, but Catherine Disher moved after Nat was on the floor, to make it clear she wasn't dead. James Parriot, who had written the script, found out and put it back in. This happened two or three times, Then JP got on a plane to Toronto to make sure Ger filmed it as written. On the final night of shooting, someone woke up somone high enough in rank at Sony to overrule JP. We've never known who. I have wondered if it was Ger, but again, I don't know. So we got the episode as shown. Sony's reason was that shows with known downer endings don't so well in later syndication.
