Me either. As far as I can see, the only time for war this fall would
basically be the first two weeks of November. That would allow a month,
more or less, for discussion and planning, while still getting the war done
before Americans have their Thanksgiving. I'm not saying it's impossible,
you understand. I'm just saying that options for this year are *very*
limited.

My only caveat on leaving things till after Christmas is past experience.
During the Six Year Hiatus, the question of war was raised *twice* in the
fall (albeit even later than this); and on both occasions it was immediately
postponed as impossible until the New Year. The same thing happened last
year, as I recall. In all three instances, the New Year came and discussion
did *not* recommence. The holiday season had basically blanked people's
minds!

I'm torn. The risk in waiting till the New Year seems obvious. On the
other hand, scheduling for war this fall will be *tight*.

Every time this gets raised, someone suggests that we have a one-week war.
However, the shorter the war, the more condensed everything has to be. How
are we going to fit in everything that people have come to expect?

First (and last), people write their own getting-to-Toronto stories, and
also spend time lingering over their departures at the end--and who can
blame them, but it does take up a couple of days at either end. In the
past, there have been attempts to curtail this part of war; but that's just
spoiling a part people's pleasure.

Once the war premise is revealed, it takes a bit of time to get reactions
organized. Only then can the actual "plot" of the war get underway. Not
that the war premise itself is ever all that war consists of.

I'm sure no one who's been there will forget that wars have developed their
own traditions. In other words, there's a bar fight *and* a party to fit
in, and often a third pan-faction get-together, as well. Anyone who has had
to organize one of those things (and I'm speaking as the person who, during
the last war, wrote a multi-part Thanksgiving dinner that was attended by
almost everyone) knows the lengthy behind-the-scenes to-and-fro of e-mails
necessary to bring it off successfully.

In other words, a one-week war is a no-hoper. Two weeks (plus a little lag
time for late posts) is pretty well the minimum--and also, if you look at
old wars, a fairly typical length. Much longer, of course, and RL becomes
intransigent in its own demands.
