We've all gone through something similar, and, as the saying goes, misery loves company. Anyway, it may provide a warning for us by letting us know just what sort of weird thing happened to you. In addition, this could be a good opportunity to develop an FK story about Nick, Lacroix, or others dealing with computers, computer glitches, and outright computer hacking. Hmmmmmm, would the enforcers keep records on computers? Best of luck with the computer. They'd get hacked by The Fearless Vampire Killers!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2012 05:01:39 -0400 From: Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> Subject: Re: My computer being hacked Well, McLisa's brother, Larry, came a bit earlier tonight--for which I'm glad, since I *really* couldn't pull a second all-nighter. I've got a singing lesson at 1pm today (which sounds trivial, I know, but I do want to be awake for it). He's had a look at the data he copied last night. The code indicates the area of my computer that the hacker was going for Also, he backtracked them through various proxy servers--which, for once, is a bit of computer jargon that was familiar from TV (Criminal Minds and Numb3rs), at least up to the point where he actually started talking in detail, at which point he lost me entirely. He told me who's responsible. So now I have to decide what to do. It's...complicated...and I don't want to talk about it on list until I've made up my mind. You therefore know that McLisa asked her brother to help me find out who it was who recently attempted to access my computer without permission. He has informed me that, by backtracking traces left on my computer, he was able to locate the computer from which the hacking attempt was made; and that he also discovered the location and owner. It is your computer, Mildred; and I conclude therefore that it is you who are responsible. He says the code indicates that you were trying to access graphics files on my computer. I am distressed by this discovery. I do realize that you are the Grand High Pooh-bah of the Forever Knight Mercenary Guild, and that *during war* you and your fellows do engage in such activities. That comes within the legitimate purview of your faction. However, this is not war; this is real life. This isn't my fictional computer; it's my real computer. I am therefore on the horns of a dilemma. On the one hand, you are a fellow Forever Knight fan and list member. On the other hand, you have engaged in an illegal activity, and I should call the police. At the very least, I should tell Lisa and Don. Before I do anything so drastic, though, I am writing you for an explanation. I hit the wrong address. That letter to Mildred was *not* supposed to go to the list. Please disregard it. Also, to explain to others on the list. Do not necessarily blame Mildred for doing this on purpose even if it were just graphic files it looks like her computer was trying to access. Mildred's computer itself has probably been hacked. I wish I could see that code. Just because Mildred's computer was trying to connect to your computer does not mean that she was doing it. What she should be blamed for is not keeping her antivirus up to date and not having a firewall or at least not having it configured properly. Also, this tells me your computer needs to have a firewall installed/configured. There are a**h**es out there that continually try to hack computers. If I turn on my notification for my firewall, I am notified sometimes hundred times a day that someone is trying to hack into my computer. They are looking for an in to find passwords, to send spam from your computer, etc. Mildred, Please have someone look at your pc. If you are doing this on purpose someone could file a report with the police. On that note. I would be able to figure out how to hack into someone's computer just from the information in the header of the email that is sent out. I had one guy regularly trying to hack into my computer. From the information I got from my firewall I was able to hack into his computer and find out his name, email address, snail mail address and telephone number. I sent him an email and told him to stop or I would call the police. I had one guy spoofing an email address I used for my richardbasehart.com web site. I found out who he was and told him to stop. He in essence laughed at me and told me I wouldn't be able to find out who he was. I immediately sent him his name, email address, snail mail address and telephone #. He stopped immediately. Note for the people who don't know me. I am a network, security, email ,web administrator. Look at your own computer. Is your antivirus up to date? Do you have a firewall installed? Unless you have a server running on your p,. (Web server, ftp server, etc) your firewall should pretty much block ANYTHING coming in. FYI. I checked yesterday's stats and 99% of these attempted hacks come from Eastern Europe and Asia. I had 50 blocked yesterday from one IP address alone.
