I say again because (as those who saw my blog posts on LJ know) I *was* having trouble about ten days ago. Well, that was solved by downloading a lot of Windows updates. This whatever-it-is seems to have triggered my firewall. Usually, I get some message about my antivirus (ESET) having blocked some "Trojan horse No. xxxxx", or something with those sorts of detail. This time the message didn't come from ESET, it just popped up; and it didn't give any particulars. It should be okay sending this to the list, since it goes through PSU, who must have protections like crazy. Anyway, I've called a computer support company (got through the Yellow Pages!), and I hope they figure things out. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they aren't going to want to take the computer away for a week, and then reboot the entire operating system. That happened to me about six or seven years ago; and *that* time, they said they'd saved all my files, only they hadn't, and I lost a lot. I'm backing all the icons up, so don't worry about that. The computer guy has come and gone, taking with him two very expensive hours on my VISA bill. He says someone has tried to hack into my computer. *Why* anyone would want to hack into *my* computer is a whole other question. (Do I have anything hack-worthy? I wouldn't think so.) I gather I bought a good firewall. As I know nothing about computers to speak of, this is pure luck. However, he says that's still no guarantee that a really good hacker didn't get through--which thrills me, as you can imagine. Some burglar pawing through your underwear drawer is how it *feels* like. The good news is that he's run a "complete diagnostic" and is pretty sure (his actual words) that there's nothing left behind on my computer. He had a list of "nothing" that was six parts techno-babble to six parts cute-words-for-nasty. What it *means* is that my computer isn't about to crash at any moment. This is a great relief. I *do* back things up, of course; but there are always things that one forgets. Also, it means that I can use my computer without being afraid that I'm going to infect other people's computers. On the other hand, I'm not at all happy about the hacking. However, he said that, to try to find out more would mean that he'd have to take the computer away (for who knows how long), with no guarantee that he'd find out who did it (but a definite guarantee of a huge bill to pay). Still, at least it does mean that, when the Vaqs decide what the faction for Vachon's guitar is to be called, I'll be able to post the icon, and the one for the Triumphants. That's definitely the good news!
