It was, yes. The word we have for the stripe on a Senator's tunic and
toga are "purpura", hence our word purple. Very expensive dye, yes.

At least one of us (me).

Sure.

Nigel said that during an interview (by telephone, I think) with TJ from the
list (whose last name I cannot remember at the moment because of incipient
senility). I *think* I have the sound file somewhere of Nigel actually saying:
"The Uncle in the what? The Uncle in a WHAT?" and then the quote you cited.
I'll have to go digging.

Google is your friend. So, of course, are Nancy Braman (archivist for the
list digests) and Stephen Fellows (who supplied her with digests for a few
months in 1996). Whence cometh the following sequence of posts.

It started on 3 Apr 1996, when L. Katherine Queen (in a post entitled "Re:
Purple thong") said,

"In response to what Monique wrote:
        >I'm not swaying towards being a cousin, no really, I like Nick.
        > D*** that purple thong! Can't get the picture out of my head.

What about a purple thong... do tell?"

Now contextually the purple thong seems to have been mentioned only in
passing (though I haven't been able to spot Monique's post). Anyway,
subsequent "thong"-titled posts were actually about *Nick's* attractions.
However, the following day, Katherine followed up with another post,
"Faction Questions". Being a newbie she had several queries about terms and
characters. Among other things, she wrote:

Still don't know what the purple thong comment was about, but
        it was tantalizing..

Those were the days of multiple digests per day. People clearly spent
*much* time on list! So the rest of the thread comes entirely from later
that day.

* Alora C. Chistiakoff answered some of Katherine's questions, but said of
the purple thong, "I have no idea *where* that came from either...but I'm
sure someone will explain."

* Dotti Rhodes (in a post entitled "Re: Faction Question") said, among
other things, "As far as the thong is concerned - wait on that one, it has
to be explained just right!!"

* And Jackie (in a post entitled "You forgot the Feather!") said:
        If I remember right......
Wasn't it Uncle in a leather thong with a purple feather between his
legs? From the original thread, he was to be on display at the Raven,
dancing....gradually, the list members disrobed the venerable ancient until
the final image sent most of us to the floor paralyzed with laughter!

At which point I was getting seriously tantalized myself! Alas, no one
seems to have volunteered to fill in the details--and I can only hope that
memories are jogged now.

Y'know, seeing this post does jog what's left of my memory. I seem to recall
now that the purple thong appeared in one of Tippi's parody fics. Do archives
of the FKFIC list from this same period exist anywhere? I'd check a week or so
before this post.
