Tomorrow being my third Tour de Cure ride (for which I'm still looking for sponsors -- hint, hint!), my FK-ish thoughts lead to the question of Our Favorite Vamps' (OFVs) nutritional views of People With Diabetes (PWD). One of the reasons OFVs mention for choosing young, virile, umm, *victims* for their meals is the "sweet taste" of their blood. On the one hand, this makes sense in the context of humans eating meat: younger animals tend to have more tender flesh, as their muscles haven't been toughened by years of running through the woods (or grazing in pastures); on the other, it would seem nonsensical, as the average blood glucose levels of children and younger adults tend to be somewhat *lower* than those of older adults. Older adults. Like those who may be prone to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (the type that can *sometimes* be managed by diet and/or pills). "Back in the day" -- because it's not nearly so cut-and-dried in today's times -- youngsters and young adults who developed diabetes almost always had Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (the type that *always* requires injectable insulin). Without it, their blood *literally* becomes sweeter as their muscles and body tissues are unable to remove and process the sugar (and nutrients) from their blood. At first glance, this would make those of us with diabetes seem to be, quite literally, sweeter meals. Before injectable insulin, people diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus would waste away and die as their blood literally became sweeter and sweeter, as the rest of their bodies starved. The time from diagnosis to death was often less than six months. The discovery of insulin is fairly recent (1921), meaning that OFV would have seen early onset diabetes as a fatal condition during both Nick's "bad-boy" decades and his "trying to atone" ones. Would the additional sugars in the blood have made newly-diagnosed PWD more enticing (as either meals or children) to Nick (in either guise) and Lacroix the contrarian, or would the ketones that built up in their blood make it completely unpalatable for Our Favorite Vamps?
