Factions that don't exist (3) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2012 08:40:29 -0400 From: Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> Subject: Factions that don't exist On Wed, 11 Apr 2012 21:34:24 -0700, Andrew asked: > Does the Indian woman, who brought over both Vashon and > the Inca, have any sort of emblem or icon? The Indian woman in the feather cloak who brought across Vachon and the Inca is sometimes referred to as "Angel". I guess that's how she was referred to in the script. Doesn't Vachon refer to her as being like an angel? She clearly isn't a "real" angel, though: she's a vampire. Anyway, one first needs to remember that the symbols were never applied to the characters. They were for the *factions*. The first symbols were drawn for the faction pins at Dead of Winter Con 2 in 1995. Some of the factions created after that were also popular enough to have symbols. (In fact, quite a few came up with their own.) However, I'm pretty sure no one bothered to create symbols for characters that did *not* have factions. That sort of misses the point, after all. Of course, the question then has to be: why do some characters have factions and others not? Sometimes it's obvious: Nick, Nat, LaCroix, Janette, Schanke, Tracy, Vachon, Screed: all had a fair amount of screen time, are popular, and have a lot of stories/art featuring them. However, where supporting, recurring, and guest characters are concerned, it's a bit more hit and miss. Some have factions: the INCArnates (the Inca), the Diviants (Divia), the Urchins (Urs), the Fleur-Boosters (Fleur), the Cohen-heads (Cohen). Sometimes factions were created, but hardly anyone joined; or a name was suggested, but the faction never quite emerged: the Scorpions (Stonetree), the Reese's Pieces (Reese), the AlmaDens (Alma), the Academy (Aristotle). To be perfectly honest, I don't think the feather-cloaked "Angel" vampire was ever all that popular with fan writers. (Were there any stories written that featured her?) Anyway, she never had a faction. Therefore, obviously, there was no symbol created for it. Actually, there are quite a few characters that never had factions. For example, when you sign up for FK Fic Fest on LiveJournal, there's a section for you to list your faction. I've always said that I'm a Die-Hard; but I've also put in a number of minor factions for characters I rather like (such as Aristotle, Reese, and Stonetree). And then I include a few others: the "Feliksities" and the "Blue Knighties" in 2010, to which I added the "LabNatties" in 2011. Two of these are fraction factions that don't actually exist (though I bet you can figure out what they mean). The Feliksities are a faction for Feliks Twist--and again, it doesn't exist. Why, I don't know: there aren't a lot of stories about him; but then there aren't a lot of stories about Aristotle, nor ones that focus on Grace, Myra, the Inca, or the police captains, all of whom have factions. I bet I'm not the only person who has invented names for non-existent factions that *ought* to exist but don't...yet. Who else lacks a faction? As far as I know, none of these have one: * Jenny Schanke. In the last war, I mentioned the "Jenny-Poos" in passing; but they don't really exist. * Nick's nephew, Andre. April called this faction the Andreivitchs; but that was another tongue-in-cheek invention. (See, I knew I wasn't the only one making up faction names.) * Bourbon. (The "House of Bourbon", anyone?) * Daniel, the Cockney boy from "Father's Day" * Francesca * Alyce Hunter * Richard Lambert and/or his wife & daughter * Q'ara, Divia's master * Barbara and/or Richard Vetter, Tracy's parents. Once upon a time, the name "Vetterans" was proposed for Tracy's faction; but it would work even better for her parents, if you ask me. All of these factionless characters have appeared in at least some fan fiction--and I bet there are others! (Of course, we just created the Blackwing faction for Marian Blackwing, didn't we? Otherwise, I would have had to add her to the list.) Then there are the couple factions that don't exist. Bearing in mind that most *claim* not to require romance (and the CotK definitely don't), it is seriously weird that no one ever created a Nick & Schanke faction. The "Pardners" maybe, or the "Buddies"? The >"Pardners" maybe, or the "Buddies"? I might suggest that one as "PotM" for "Partners of the Month", the episode in which Schanke moved in with Nick because he and Myra had a spat. (For a while, there was talk about an item-faction -- similar to the CaddyWhacks -- springing up around Schanke's duck lamp.) There are also a number of "trinity" factions, but those are primarily "slash" factions (physical intimacy an integral part of the relationship): Dark Trinity, Unholy Trinity, Unholy Alliance, etc. The Unnamed Faction (Lacroix/Nick; faction HQ is Don Constantine's house) is another slash faction. There is also at least one faction based on a relationship that did not occur in canon: the Unsuiteds (Lacroix-Schanke and/or Lacroix/Schanke, originated at Bridging the Knight, IIRC). Brenda F. And perhaps Selene, Divia's mother, might be the "Selenoids"? Okay...going back into lurker mode, now! ;) On Fri, 13 Apr 2012 08:40:29 -0400 Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> writes: > On Wed, 11 Apr 2012 21:34:24 -0700, Andrew asked: > > > Does the Indian woman, who brought over both Vashon and > > the Inca, have any sort of emblem or icon? > > The Indian woman in the feather cloak who brought across Vachon and the Inca > is sometimes referred to as "Angel".
