Fw: FK today ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 1 Oct 2011 14:03:38 -0700 From: Liz the Lucky <lizthelucky@c.......> Subject: FK today This is something I've been musing over for a while and I'm finally remember to post here. So much of the world has changed since FK aired. The Web was just beginning. So were cell phones. No Twitter, Facebook or smart phones. What would the show be like if it was being shot now? Obviously the Raven and the Nightcrawler would have interactive websites. Would the vamps have their own sets of sites that only they (yeah, right) could access? Would there be special Net Enforcers? Or Hunter rings? Medical changes. One of the things I love about FK is the biological element of vampirism. Imagine if Nat could use all of today's equipment. Thoughts? Hey, Vachon's had his own page for years - it does look dated though: http://laplor.tripod.com/vachon/home.html ;) Laplor ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Oct 2011 18:17:49 -0400 From: Brenda Bell <webwarren@e.......> Subject: Re: FK today At 17:03 10/1/2011, Liz the Lucky wrote: >So much of the world has changed since FK aired. Maybe not, if they wanted to keep the illusion going... OTOH, the Nightcrawler probably has his own XM Radio Channel as well as several shows on BlogTalkRadio... >Would the vamps have their own sets of sites that only they (yeah, right) >could access? Like blood-wine purveyors (or the Vampbear's Neck of the Week subscription)? (One wonders if/how retinal-scan biometric security would work on vamps, especially if/when their eyes change...) I could see LC Twitter-stalking Nick, with accounts and avatars of all his victims, with bit.ly links to a "you need human/live blood" site. Also, vamps using multiplayer games and social sites to stalk their next live prey much the same way as child predators. >Would there be special Net Enforcers? Or Hunter rings? Naah, just LaCroix game-mastering, owning, and moderating all the *real* vamp sites... >Medical changes. One of the things I love about FK is the biological >element of vampirism. Imagine if Nat could use all of today's equipment. Do you think she could sustain an episode just trying to figure out which genes have been added, subtracted, and/or altered, and how many different vampish variations there are of each? One of the comments was that the production style would have been different because newer (for the time) shows were much more of a quick cut, short scenes type of thing; no longish scenes of exposition. So, the way the series would be produced and shown would be much different today than originally, not even mentioning changes that technology would have made in the show. Janette, at least, was interested in making the Raven profitable, so there'd be some sort of splashy, eye candy-ish page featuring exclusive drinks, bands, etc. (And you just know she'd be getting any band she wanted.) Maybe with a special, secret area for, ahem, overdayers? Hmm. Given how rapidly videos can go viral on youtube, would vamps still be a secret? Because sooner or later someone will catch a vamp flying and upload it. Had more, but I'm still in omygodomygot mode after the Doctor Who finalle. Wow. >>Would the vamps have their own sets of sites that only they (yeah, right) >>could access? > Like blood-wine purveyors (or the Vampbear's Neck of the Week > subscription)? (One wonders if/how retinal-scan biometric security > would work on vamps, especially if/when their eyes change...) What about retinal scanners that *only* work with vamped out eyes? >>Medical changes. One of the things I love about FK is the biological >>element of vampirism. (Maybe she could > figure out what *really* happened to Janette in "Human Factor"...) Not a whole episode. But a season long story arc would really work. Everything from photoshopping, to mass hysteria, to special effects. Like alot of things in our world, the common wisdom will accept something long before the "educated" and such will. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2011 00:09:32 -0700 From: Megan Hull <mistrydder@y.......> Subject: Re: FK today >One of the comments was that the production style would >have been different because newer (for the time) shows >were much more of a quick cut, short scenes type of thing; >no longish scenes of exposition. And I really don't think that would have worked very well for FK, to be honest. The exposition was where we got our (admittedly inconsistent) character development. *tries to remember the shows that were on in the early 2000s. fails*. >What about retinal scanners that *only* work with vamped out eyes? Do their retinas change? *ponders* I'm thinking that would require an iris-pattern scan, not a retinal scan. Or maybe an eye scan that checks the amount of light reflected from the eyes? That might work if you were going for something keyed to vampires in general, instead of specific individuals. >Like alot of things in our world, the common wisdom will accept something long >before the "educated" and such will. That's because the "educated" see so much baloney come and go before a nugget of truth comes about. :P (Anyone remember those copper bracelets that were supposed to cure arthritis?) The first thing that pops into my head is the availability of online classes-- do you think some vampires would decide to go to college? Or get a telecommute job? - Megan "Eternal nights too short, How quickly melt away, With all the love we shared once, Forever in a Day." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2011 00:17:52 -0700 From: Andrew Caruthers <slinter@j.......> Subject: Re: FK today On Sun, 2 Oct 2011 00:09:32 -0700 Megan Hull <mistrydder@y.......> writes: That's because the "educated" see so much baloney come and go before a nugget of truth comes about. :P ================================= Yes. So much that they fail to recognize the real thing usually. (Anyone remember those copper bracelets that we re supposed to cure arthritis?) No. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2011 04:36:42 -0700 From: "Libby A. Smith" <libratsie@s.......> Subject: Re: FK today **(Anyone remember those copper bracelets that we re supposed to cure arthritis?) No.** I never heard anyone claim that they'd cure arthritis, just that it'd help with the pain and some people still swear they will. When you suffer from chronic pain, believe me, you'll try even the most outlandish thing. Even if it is just a "mental" reason it is working and not a scientific one, you will keep using the copper bracelet. There's probably still be people that swear the videos have vampires. The question whether others will believe those who claim so. A lot of what has been listed in this thread existed to some degree when the show went off the air. We did have portable phones, they just weren't small ones like today. We did have webpages at least towards the end of the show. We did have email (this list existed). We didn't have Facebook, though. I wonder just how many followers the Nightcrawler would have ;-) --Libby ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2011 08:15:54 -0400 From: Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> Subject: This time last year.... This time last year, we were all geared up for war. The first post had dropped to the list; we'd just found out what the war premise was; and there was mad writing going on as each faction made its first moves. (Or people packed and booked tickets for Toronto, depending on whether we're talking real or virtual.) It was my first war. I'd heard so much about them, and was thrilled we were finally having another one so I could take part. Just as everyone had said, it turned out to be a lot of fun. I had a great time!
