Query about War One ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 23 Mar 2011 15:04:04 -0500 From: Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> Subject: Query about War One I said yesterday that, after I gave my conference paper, there was one question I couldn't really answer. The person asking was very intrigued by our wars, never having heard of any fandom coming up with something that (more or less) defused the sort of factioneering that can lead to flamewars and fractious splinter groups. However, she was curious to know how much discussion and organization had gone into the *first* war. I told her that it was started with a post by Laurie Salopek that contained the first installment in the story: LaCroix summons three Cousins to Toronto, and orders them to attack fans affiliated with Nick to force them to change affiliation. Looking at the actual story, though, I see that it is attributed to "Laurie M. Salopek, Margaret A. Newman, John E. Dencoff", so presumably the three got together to plan it out, even if it was Laurie who dropped the actual post to the list. But how far did they let members of the other factions in on their plans? Reading the war, one gets the impression that, as things progressed, people who'd been reading the early posts got excited and wrote themselves in--which accounts for a lot of late arrivals. The question therefore pertains particularly to the people who were the objects of the earliest attacks, most of whom were Knighties. How far did *they* know that some sort of "attack" was coming? Were they warned in advance so that they would take that first post in the spirit intended? (One might even ask, "Were they volunteers or conscripts?") It occurs to me that, if that first attack came out of the blue, there might be someone too tied up in RL to be able to take the time to write their reaction post. So it makes sense that there'd be some prior discussion--maybe *off* list--at least between the Cousins and the embryonic Knighties. And how did people *not* involved in that first war react to those first few posts? Did people know something was in the offing? I guess I'm asking this of those who were there, way back then. We don't seem to have copies of FORKNI-L preserved back that far; and, in any case, a lot of this probably happened in private e-mail anyway.
