Subject: FK Wiki - Dead of Winter Con???
Can anyone help me with information about the two Dead of Winter
conventions? I've been expanding the page in the Forever Knight Wiki
(http://foreverknight.wikia.com/wiki/Dead_of_Winter), which originally said
only that they were held in 1994 and 1995. A bit of googling turned up a
number of interesting snippets of additional info, but also raises a lot of
questions. I'm hoping there are still people on the list who can cast their
mind back that far!
1. When were they held? "Winter" lasts for months, and runs over the New
Year; so I can't be sure--the more so since I have picked up dates ranging
from December to February! How long did they last (a day, weekend)?
2. Where were they held? Boston, I gather. (Both?) Can anyone remember
more specifically, i.e. the hotel?
3. I gather that some of the actors were scheduled guests. Can anyone
remember who, and which year they attended?
4. Apparently there was a writing contest for Dead of Winter '95. Second
place in the serious fiction category was won by Brian Russell Hauser's
"It's the thought that counts". Subsequently, a number of the stories and
poems were published in the fanzine, Bedtime Stories from the Dead of
Winter,
(a) Was there a writing contest in '94 also?
(b) Can anyone remember what the *other* categories were (e.g.adult,
humour, poetry)?
(c) And who won?
(d) Of course, if someone has a copy of the fanzine and could send
me more info on that, I'd be able to fill out its page, too. We don't have
the names of any of the stories that appeared in it.
5. Susan Garrett's website says that Vampire Dance was held on Saturday,
3/12/94. At this, she wrote the story, "An Invitation to the Dance", by
popular request and with much encouragement.
So...there was a dance? Any more details? Was this just one year
or both?
6. There are pictures of Amy wearing costumes made by Valerie Meachum.
(Amy Who?) Was there a costume competition?
And, of course, are there any *other* con activities that people remember?
Panels? Sessions? Stuff in people's hotel rooms? All is wiki-worthy!

was there. I know the first was in January. It was held then because
originally it had been scheduled to be a Boston area Star Trek con, which
Nigel would attend. That con fell apart, but NIgel was still available, so
Lora Hains of the FK Fanclub (yes, the one who later provided the name for
Natalie's suicide friend in Last Knight) produced the mini-con Dead of
WInter.
I don't remember the date of the second. I do know Deborah Duchene joined
Nigel in attending. Both lasted a long weekend, coming in on Thursday
night (for me), programming on Fri., Sat., and Sun. morning. Con was over at
noon.

The first was at a rather swanky convention hotel.. I know we freaked the
mundanes who were also in the hotel the first time. :) One hotel was
actually suburban Boston, Worcester, Mass. I don't remember where the other
was, except that it was in Boston, or the names of either.

I don't think so. It was pretty spur of the moment because of limited prep
time.

I only remember that the second year dance coincided with a new ep of FK so
at first was sparsely attended. We were all in the rooms watching the show.
I think the Fix was the ep. because I remember coming down to breakfast in
the elevator w. Nigel next morning and asking him if LC's presence in the
loft was Nick's hallucination or real. He said real.

Yes. Amy Hull. I can ask her to write you if Valerie, who is still on the
