Riding to Stop Diabetes / Tour de Cure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 22 May 2010 18:14:35 -0400 From: Brenda Bell <webwarren@e.......> Subject: Riding to Stop Diabetes / Tour de Cure (Posted with McLisa's permission.) On June 13 (my fiftieth birthday), I will attempt to ride 50 miles in this year's Tour de Cure to raise money to further the mission of the American Diabetes Association: to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all those affected by diabetes. We all know folk whose lives have been touched by diabetes -- on this list and elsewhere. (I can think of some old quote lists asking Libratsie if she has has eaten!) I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2002, and Frank (my other half) -- who had been bordering along the edges for about a decade -- was formally diagnosed about two and a half years ago. I can list a number of my family members and friends outside FK fandom who also have diabetes, and that's without touching the diabetes online community (or communiTIES) in which I've been so active the past two years. In this period of time, I've also learned how frequently diabetes has been missed, misdiagnosed, or mistreated -- especially in those who develop Type 1 diabetes as adults, and those in low-income and ethnic communities -- to the point that it's often not until these people develop complications of diabetes that the underlying cause is diagnosed and treated. With the funds raised in the Tours de Cure (there are a number of them held all around the United States), the American Diabetes Association will be able to support more outreach programs into communities at risk for diabetes as well as research to improve the treatment of diabetes -- and maybe even one or more cures. This will be my first time participating in a charity bicycle ride as anything other than a car-bound (or rest-stop-bound) radio operator, and I'm eagerly anticipating the event (even if it *does* mean I'll be 50 years old that day!). Please help us in the fight against diabetes by sponsoring my ride. I'm trying to raise at least $500 (do you see a theme of "fifties" here? it's quite deliberate, I assure you!). You can sponsor me online by going to http://main.diabetes.org/goto/bfbell where you can make a secure, 100% tax-deductible donation. Brenda F.
