My friend and I were at dinner and my car exploded. The started to smell funny, then smoke started coming from the cigarette lighter/dashboard. Nervous, I drove to the first place I could - a Brakes Master, then I hastily parked as it continued to smoke, opened the doors and we got the hell out of there. Smoke was POURING from the opened doors. The car alarm went off, then the horn, as less than five minutes later, the battery exploded into flames, blowing the windows out, followed by the engine. I was in a state of disbelief, followed by panic and blind instinct. I don't know how we got out so quickly. Everything in that car is burned, gone. Nothing remains but a burnt out shell. The steering wheel is gone. The seats are so melted that the metal is bent and sagging. The seats are gone. The back seat is melted. My SCA stuff in the trunk however, was untouched, and the gas tank did not get touched, despite the flames engulfing the entire car, front to back. Someone was watching out for us. Someone wanted us to stop for dinner. The miraculous thing? I was taking Jen home. If I hadn't decided to take us to dinner, then driver her home before heading back myself, I would have had that happen to me on the freeway, alone. In short, I would not be here. I still shouldn't be here. It's a miracle either of us are unscathed. They had me on an oxygen mask for little, then they did 2 chest x rays, a breathing treatment, arterial blood gas and I had oxygen via nasal cannula for about an hour and a half. The external hard drive that I had my information on it for all my IM clients, school stuff, and all games other than SWG was a total loss. I I had taken it to my friend's and had it in the backseat. (I was getting some things from her). So now I have NO money, and no car, so I can't even go look for a job now, or do anything for that matter. No more kung fu, or anything, for now at least. I haven't the money, nor the car anymore. BUT, I am alive. Alive and untouched. As is my friend, who helped save my life but deciding that she was too tired, and that we should take my car. Today we found that there are quite a few recalls out on my car. There may be a lawsuit as well. I am still shaken, but amazed to be here. http://tinypic.com/r/219t6qa/4 That is a shot from the front, looking into the backseat. Also my fiancee broke up with me on Halloween, and my father is going to have to have surgery in his neck, to help prevent more strokes. If you all could send us some good thoughts and prayers, I'd be really grateful. Megan MacLean Also... anyone else laughing over Twilight? I had a nice convo with another FK fan in my dojo of all places, about how much more awesome FK is. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 2009 22:40:12 -0700 From: Walt Doherty <wdoherty5@c.......> Subject: Re: PRAYER - car fire >I just got out of the hospital about a day ago. It's little things like possible death and destruction that make you realize what's really important: things like dojos and FK. :-) Anyway, what's truly important is that you are still around to comfort your father, you and your friend wll always have interesting thoughts about dinner, and you (and a lot of us) got a good laugh out of Twilight. Bright blessings on you Walt D ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 2009 01:00:14 -0500 From: Wendy <w.rigney@v.......> Subject: Re: PRAYER - car fire Oh, my God, Megan. You surely have some wonderful Guardian Angels looking out for you! I am grateful that you did stop - and are still with us. Things can be replaced. People cannot. Prayers are definitely with you. I will also say a prayer for your father. Take care, Wendy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 2009 10:18:45 -0000 From: Lorin <vachesang@1.......> Subject: Re: PRAYER - car fire Oh thank God you both got out ok. Jobs and possessions and money pale into insignificance when it's a life or death situation. That photo is seriously alarming. Someone is certainly looking out for you. Ouch. I've seen a fully-involved car fire once. The flames were fully 40 feet in height at the time we passed by; police and fire had set up a perimeter of about 1/4 km (1-2 blocks). From what I could tell, had the driver and/or passengers not already gotten out, there would have been nothing left of them to identify. The phrase "scary" doesn't even begin to describe it. >My SCA stuff in the trunk however, was untouched, and the gas tank >did not get touched, despite the flames engulfing the entire car, >front to back. Wow. That is an incredible stroke of luck, given how much SCA stuff is handmade and irreplaceable. >The external hard drive that I had my information on it for all my >IM clients, school stuff, and all games other than SWG was a total >loss. Do you have backups you can use to recover some of the info? >So now I have NO money, and no car, so I can't even go look for a >job now, or do anything for that matter. I understand that, as I've been on the market for about 2 years and the big issue is that I don't have a car (or a driver's license), and cycling is difficult in winter weather. >Also my fiancee broke up with me on Halloween, and my father is >going to have to have surgery in his neck, to help prevent more >strokes. Sure brings things into focus. These are pics we took after it was put out: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/GondorRangerGirl/Car/car030.jpg Left side, front of car. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/GondorRangerGirl/Car/car031.jpg Left side, back. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/GondorRangerGirl/Car/car014.jpg I think this WAS the front. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/GondorRangerGirl/Car/car015.jpg The backseat. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/GondorRangerGirl/Car/car016.jpg Dashboard/side. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/GondorRangerGirl/Car/car017.jpg Dashboard - yes there is no longer a steering wheel. Desiree has sent me a copy of Merc Central from about 2001. It was recorded as preparations were underway for War XI, and contains the full text of the page "liar.html" (which is a lot of fun), a lot more pages for faction links, and one of the missing photos. Invaluable: there is no way I could possibly have come up with a substitute, especially for the photo! This 2001 version is not quite the same as the imperfect copy I already had: it looks as though the site was revised slightly after War XI was played. So I'm going to try to merge the two. The result will be neither, and hence inauthentic; but it will preserve bits of both where I would otherwise have had to make a choice. I am still missing the doctored "vamped-out" version of the photo. If anyone should have a copy, would they please send it to me? Failing that, I will have a go in Paint. I figure fangs.... Much thanks to Desiree!
