Swine flu and fever dreams ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 16 Nov 2009 05:25:05 -0500 From: Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> Subject: FK GeoCities websites - Merc Central (part one) For those of you who have not been keeping up with this running soap opera.... Back in August, when Nancy Taylor checked the links page on her website and realized how many of our fandom's sites were on GeoCities, she made sure to post a list only of the sites that were actually active. Nevertheless, by the time I got the post (on digest), Yahoo had somehow managed to "lose" one of these websites. Merc Central could not be accessed. Mildred Cady, the owner of the site, was on holiday. When she got home, she found that her home had been robbed. This naturally took her mind off the fact that her website had mysteriously also vanished. Since then, I have been unable to get hold of her. (There seems to be a trend here.) So.... In default of a back-up copy of the site, I am trying to reconstitute it using an imperfect version off the Wayback Machine. This has most of the pages (but is lacking two of them), and most of the graphics (but missing a few). There are also a couple of photos missing. Replacing the graphics is no big deal. So it lacked a picture of a MasterCard: I had one in my graphics collection. Cash? Okay, I'm not sure if this should be a heap of coins or a roll of American greenbacks; but I have both. Optima card? That I couldn't find. (They seem to have discontinued them.) So I substituted PayPal, which is certainly in the spirit of things. That leaves the missing pages and photos. At this point, I can only turn to *you*. Is Mildred out there? Any other Mercs? Anyone who remembers the site? Because I need your help if this site can be restored to its full glory and greed. I appeal to the Great Collective Wisdom of the Fandom. (Parts two and three will be coming up.) Both of these were accessed only through those click-on-the-form type of links, which presumably explains why the Archive Project's software failed to pick them up. Now, one of them is, I think, fairly straightforward. There is a page for the Guild Charter; but it says "accessible to members only". At that point, you can click on a link that says, "I swear I'm a Merc. No really. I am." You are then supposed to go to a page named "liar.html". I sort of figure that this is a black page with the word "Liar" in big letters. (But, if I'm wrong, the Great Collective Wisdom will tell me, right?) The other is a bit trickier. There is a page for hiring a member of the Mercenaries Guild for the forthcoming War. After you fill out the form and submit it, you can click on another link. This says, "O.K. I did it... now what?" You are then supposed to go to a page named "success.html". So what should this say? Personally, I suspect it was something along the lines of, "What do you mean, "now what"? Now you pay! The Mercs don't work for free." However, that is only the gist. There are plenty of ways that one can word it. (And, of course, it could be some other rejoinder entirely.) Can anyone remember? Greer gwatson2@r....... http://www.foreverknight.org/FK4/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 2009 05:56:46 -0500 From: Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> Subject: FK GeoCities websites - Merc Central (part three) As mentioned in Part One, Merc Central is missing two photos. There is a section of the site that comprises links to other faction pages (whose addresses the Mercs will sell you, of course, since they don't work for free). Most of the links actually go to a page for the Cousins. However, there's a little complex of pages associated with the NatPackers. First, you go to a page that says, "WARNING! Due to the alarming number of recent "defections" to the NatPack from the noble Merc Ranks, this link was modified for your protection." Below that, you are told, "Shocking new evidence of NatPackerly perfidy". At this point, there should be a picture (named "natpk-sm.gif"). The alt for the picture is, "Shocking, horrible picture here". The caption reads, "Expose: several members of the Pack attemptted [sic] to abduct the previous Grand High Poohbah outside a Madison, WI, Red Lobster." You are told that you can click on a link to go to a close-up. If you do this, you go to a second page. The second page should have a second photo (named "natpk-smx.gif") with the alt "Vamped out Packers!!!", and the comment, "Oh o.k... so *maybe* that one's doctored just a touch..." This suggests that someone did a bit of photoshopping to the first pic--adding fangs, maybe, or something like that. (There is also a third page, which is the one with the actual link to the NatPackers' faction site.) Now, as you will have gathered, the Archive Project saved all of these pages; and also saved the gifs used to decorate them (gold chain, Mercs faction symbol). But the two photos are missing. Anyone have them? Mildred? Other Mercs? Outraged NatPackers? Anyone? I hadn't noticed that logic hole before. It is not too cheesy to observe that Nick does seem to be gradually recalling things as the show goes on. In the familiar car...on streets he's patrolled for years....things started to "come back"....until he can figure out where his partner lives. All hail the wonderful antiviral drugs the doc gave me! On the plus side, I've lost almost a stone in weight in four days - that's 14lbs to you folks outside our hallowed shores. <g> So on my enforced stay in bed, with a fever topping 102 at times, I decided to kill the time I could actually keep my eyes open by watching my favourite show. ..can anyone imagine how disturbing it is to watch our favourite vampire not only fly around the screen but then sort of morph out of the t.v. and swirl around your HEAD? And the glowing eyes. <shudder> that was just WRONG. Because they detached from Nick and sort of winged off on their own round my room. Thankfully I'm feeling much better today! Note to self: when suffering from a fever, watch pretty pictures of flowers. Not vampire shows.
