Going along with this idea, if we accept Natalie's assertion that what makes vampires is medical -- some kind of retrovirus that binds to the . . . . > 4. A vampire's very existence is a source of guilt. Once a human, the vampire must > prey on humans in order to survive. well. As a way to combat this, the vampire virus inhibits the vampire's ability to process guilt in a meaningful way, forcing them to either reject guilty feelings (thereby feeding and surviving) or be trapped in a mental prison of their own making (thereby preventing him from turning against others). Roger - - - - - - - - - - This goes along with my thinking. Specifically that the 'virus' (or whatever it ia) that turns someone into a vampire at the same time it does that destroys that part of the brain that would make / allow someone to feel guilt over the killing they do. This would also explain why Natalie's brother Richard loses it when brought across. The vampire virus not only made him a vampire, but it destroyed his conscience. At some point, Janette refers to this in Nick -- or something similar -- that is, Nick is not quite like other vampires. Remember, a vampire needs to kill or at least glut himself/herself on multiple people during first hunger. Richard was left alone in Nick's loft with nothing but cow's blood which would not assuage his thirst. What else was he supposed to do? Until he killed that woman because his hunger was too great, Richard was behaving more like Dexter than a psychopathic serial killer, i.e. he wanted to be a vigilante for good. On his situation I totally blame Nick and Nat.
