Good point. In FK, it definitely wasn't genetic. (At least, if Nat's research
was any indication.) In other universes, vampirismt can be inherited, and
the vampires can not only reproduce in... er... "normal" sexual fashion with
each other, they can also interbreed with humans.
I liked FK's "viral" take on it, though. Nick's angst over not being able to
indulge in those mortal activites added a lot to the tragic-hero aspect of the
series.

I believe Nick could "indulge" , but with another vampire,
the exchange of blood was the thing, as I understand it
sex paled by comparison. With humans, Nick could but
he had control issues; presumably the climax of sexual
intercourse would be the biting and drinking of the 'partner's'
blood, but he was so afraid he wouldn't/couldn't
stop that he didn't want to take the chance.
