Subject: Disappointing parallels

I was watching Moonlight this evening, and

(Spoiler alert) .......
...............................................

I was very disappointed with the apparent plotline
they took, having Mick's ex come back as a human. It's
way too much a direct take off on The Human Factor
episode (Season 3)from FK.

Much as unrealistic stretch I believed "HF" to be, for
it to be blatantly plagiarized is disturbing to say
the least.

I'd agree if I thought the creators of Moonlight had heard of FK. From all I
have read, it doesn't seem to be the case. So it is more than likely a
coincidence.

In my humble opinion.......since CBS produces Moonlight now and in 1992 FK's
first thirteen episodes, they realized what a error it was for them to
cancel FK. So they figured they would bring back a show with the same theme
 as FK
only with different character names and series title.

I haven't watched too many of the episodes. I can't seem to get into it. I
enjoy Blood Ties more mainly because my husband and I keep watching for
scenery background that was used in FK. It's like revisiting FK over again
 making
me want to visit the City of the Knight again soon.

In the current episode they also ripped off(or reprised) the film plot of the
Gene Hackman film "The Conservation" where the young lovers are trying to murder
the unconvenient husband, with the plot twist/misunderstanding of the garbeled
overheard conversation of the young conspirators. The ending if different of
course. And of course the "Human Factor", vampire becomes human, altough that is
 not explained as yet.

If we are going to bash Moonlight and the people behind it, then we need to
bash Forever Knight for ripping of the vampire detective idea from PN Elrod and
several other writers whose books were completed before FK. Point being, ideas
are often similar and there's a saying in the writing world that no ideas are
 identical.

Also, to pitch a story or movie, you often have to say such and such happens
such as in the movie (insert name of hit movie).

I seriously doubt Moonlight has anything to do with FK as far as CBS is
concerned. For one thing, the same folks are most likely not at CBS anymore (I could
be wrong, but turn over is huge as networks). Secondly, like it or not,
Forever Knight was not a huge hit or we'd have had it on DVDs much more quickly (and
it would've sold much better). Remember, it was nearly cancelled after all
seasons (and was after the third).

In the business world, there'd have been no "mistake" in cancelling Forever
Knight as it wasn't bringing in the huge money. If they did think so, why not
just remake Forever Knight and play on the "known" series? Shows are remade often
 - look at Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.

Moonlight is Moonlight, Forever Knight is Forever Knight. Two different shows
which happen to have come similar concepts but are not the same. Yes, I watch
 and love them both.

I remember people claiming Angel was a FK rip-off and I'm still trying to
 figure that one out.

Back when Kindred was on, there was a person from this list going around to
all the Kindred boards claiming fans were stupid, FK was much better than "that
stupid Kindred," and all that. I don't want to see that happen again.

I love Forever Knight - I also love Moonlight, Angel (especially season 5),
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dark Shadows, Blood Ties (when I remember to watch it)
and so forth. I like a good story and if the main characters happen to be
vampires, yipppppeeeee! ;-) I wasn't that keen on Kindred, though it was "okay."

Don't get me wrong, it is fine if you don't like Moonlight. I certainly
understand. However, please remember a number of us love the show.

I don't even watch Moonlight, but thank you for that
dose of reality, Libs.

Libby, I too love any vampire show that makes it to
TV. I liked Angel for vastly different reasons, and I
love Blood Ties, most notably because I loved the
books Tanya Huff wrote. I thought the Kindred was the
unfortunate victim of unhappy circumstance (being that
I personally know one of the original creators of the
game). As someone who is writing an original vampire
novel, I watch/read almost *everything* in the genre I
can get my hands on.

Moonlight is *not* FK, and if it were any other
network, most of us probably wouldn't be so critical.
And yes people change at networks, but I have a very
hard time believing that people in decision-making
programming roles are all gone, and that some remember
FK. The plot parallels are just *too* similar, and the
episodes I have seen go a bit *beyond* derivative. I
guess that was my whole point.

Oy, sorry about that. Obviously I meant that to go
privately. This is what happens when I post on less
than a full cup of coffee.

Am I the only one who collapsed with hysterical laughter last night while
watching Moonlight? At the first scene meeting at the outdoor cafe, when
Morgan/Coraline did the "try to feed the vampire a french fry," bit I felt
it was an in-joke nod-of-respect to FK. All that was missing was the
ketchup!
