He wasn't trying to act human. In fact, out on the street, he might have been emphasizing his vampire side to try to get to Natalie, freak her out and see if she'd run off screaming or not. I think he was going through one of his dark funks, depressed about the world in general and his lot in particular, rather like in "Feeding the Beast" when he was ready to re-vamp himself. In FtB, he was among crowds of mortals, so he still had to act human, at least until he could cut one out of the herd and isolate it. This time, it was out on a deserted street, no one else in earshot or close enough to pick up on the predator in their midst. He wanted to lash out at the world, and one way to do that was to scare Natalie; it would also help him see whether she was a threat to him. Plus, as Phylis said, maybe he was just especially hungry.... ;-) Roxana, I totally agree about Nick's life in Toronto before meeting up with Natalie. He can't have been particularly close to anyone there, certainly no one who knew his secret. He didn't even go see Janette for the first time until the pilot, when he'd apparently been in town for three years. Makes me wonder if he'd just gone through some sort of crisis or traumatic event, like when LaCroix conned him into killing his little ballerina. Did he move to Toronto in a hurry, ahead of some sort of trouble with his previous life? Or some sort of disappointment, leaving him especially cynical and disillusioned about people who claim to be trying to help him? Perhaps something that put him into a deep funk, which only Natalie was able to bring him out of? :D Hmmm....perhaps this should be a story challenge on the fanfic list? What happened to Nick just before he moved to Toronto, and how did it affect his behavior when he first met Natalie? -Janet(te) -- NatPack despite the name "Of course Doakes gets the creeps off of me. The only real question I have is why, in a building full of cops, all supposedly with a keen insight into the human soul, is Doakes the *only one* who gets the creeps from me?" -Dexter Morgan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2007 01:53:17 -0500 From: Janette NatPack <natpackjanette@g.......> Subject: Re: Episode Discussion: Only The Lonely On 8/17/07, Roxana Elizondo <roxeliz@h.......> wrote: > > My opinion is that something happened to Nick to cause him to withdraw > from his limited association with humanity. <snip> > Another reason for Nick's behavior could be that Nick's was trying to > scare Natalie off and while thevampire he's presenting her isn't the real > him in most cases it would be effective in scaring off humans. > Wow, this post came in on a separate email thread than the one I just replied to, so I hadn't read it until after I sent my own. Guess all I can say is, great minds think alike! ;-) Oh, and I see that the way the quote came up in the message was wrong, the bit I quoted about Nick acting feral was from Naia, not Phylis. Sorry! -Janet(te) -- NatPack, despite the name "I think this is a friendly gesture. Kind of a, 'Hey, wanna play?' And yes, I do want to play. I really, really do." -Dexter, on finding a dismembered Barbie left in his home by a serial killer ------------------------------ End of FORKNI-L Digest - 18 Aug 2007 to 20 Aug 2007 (#2007-35) **************************************************************
