Subject: Episode Discussion: Hunters
I like this episode because it adds more depth to Schanke's character, same
as "I will repay" did for Natalie.
In the German dubbed version this is the episode where Nick and Schanke
switch from the formal address "Sie" to the informal "Du", signifying a turn
from professional relationship to friendship.
Interestingly, the translators made some alterations towards the end of the
episode, like throwing in the line for Schanke: "Seit wann dutzen wir uns
eigentlich?", meaning "Since when do we say 'Du'?" instead of "You've read my
files?".
And instead of "You've lost that battle a long time ago", Nick says "Ich
hätte nie gedacht, dass so einer wie Du mal mein Freund wird", meaning: "I never
thought that someone like you would become my friend".
Don't know why the translators changed that, but I find this is a nice touch,
contrary to other occasions where they pretty often messed things up.

Yes, I always have a hard time with that. As an UFfer, I'd say this scene
shows whom LC considers more important. But as someone with common sense, I find
it odd that LC wants to leave Janette behind instead of coming to her assistance
as it should be his job.

In watching the three seasons and the three different captains there really
is a large discrepancy between the stories that feature the captains.
Stonetree by far recieved the most individual storylines as opposed to Reese
or poor Cohen. Now I personally like all three captains for indivdiual
reasons but I think a contributing factor to my preference towards Stonetree
overall is that as a viewer I got to know more about him. This episode and
others show us the man and friendships behind the cop.

I like the little salud gesture Nick gives to the portrait of Illse.

This really cracks me up how Natalie has complete disregard for the eww
factor in others. Grace was sort of portrayed in the same way which is why I
really dug their interactions. They both had no problem eating chicken that
Natalie had expertly cut using a surgical knife or dumping birthday cake
remains into the hazardous waste bin. Yes the knife and the forceps had been
properly steralized but there's something about the idea that their primary
function is to be used on dead human bodies that creates a slight ick
factor. LOL Natalie I love you! It sort of reminds me of an episode of
X-Files, coincidentally enough about vampires, where Scully is performing an
autopsy and examining stomach contents. The victim had eaten pizza and while
listing the toppings she finds she starts getting hungry herself.
Also, isn't Natalie's use of medical instruments other for what they're
intended for part of the Forever Knight Drinking game?

I love the picnic scene and everything about it. I like how both Nat and
Schanke tag team Nick into coming down. It really shows how far Nick and
Schanke's partnership has progressed when Schanke actually wants a turn at
talking to Nick. I also like how Nick really doesn't put up much of a fight
at the thought of attending the picnic. Also amusing was Nick's word choice.
He talks about the possibility of bursting into flames during the "hot dog
and ice cream courses". He speaks of it like a formal sit down dinner
complete with waiters rather than a casual picnic. It's a nice moment that
hints at Nick's age without actually saying it out loud.
Nick's reaction to the Schanke's team winning the ballgame was a lot of fun
and it was great to see him so enthused about the victory. It was also nice
to see Nick greeting other people from a far. It's so easy to think of Nick
as being a total terror, hence the fanon term "Knightmare", but it's moments
like these that show that Nick is well liked around the precinct.
And the NNPacker in me adores Nick's greeting to Natalie. Nick rubbing her
legs was a really affectionate gesture that can be viewed both as friendly
and "very" friendly, especially right in front of Stonetree. This light kiss
on the lips was also much appreciated. What I love about their portrayal in
season 1 is that their relationship is light and non-angsty. It bounces
between lightly flirtageous and friendly so seemlessly. And yes that final
cut does seem odd. I wonder if maybe Catherine Disher was expecting them to
call cut just before that because perhaps that's where the script ends and
when they didn't she kept going until they did. Then the editor probably
just decided to include all the footage. That's my completely uninformed
opinion.
And because I have a major wardrobe fetish the costuming during the picnic
is made of total squee. Shanke's print shirt is a riot and Natalie's
baseball jersey cements the idea to me that Natalie is a baseball fan. It's
unfortunate that we couldn't see what team she was sporting and that later
on the jersey is gone for the night scenes. Nick totally cracks me up. He
shows up wearing this GQ white suit when we know perfectly well that he owns
casual duds. It's almost like he's dressing up for the occassion.
