Another point to bear in mind: Nick took his oath on a bible. Now, I know
that this is common practice on television; but, in real life, people often
don't. I don't just mean people of other religions taking the oath on the
religous documents of their own faith (e.g. a Moslem on the Koran). That's
irrelevant to Nick. But there is also the option of affirmation.
If Nick had affirmed, he wouldn't have had to put his hand on a
bible--and we would have missed that striking little bit where he is trying
to hide the pain of his hand smoldering as it trembled on the book. Of
course, *outside* the story, in the real world of the studio, they simply
*had* to put this scene in for its dramatic effect! But, within the story,
one has to motivate it.
It is, on the face of it, such a silly torment for Nick to suffer
when he could avoid it so easily. The likeliest explanation is that, being
still devoutly Catholic (for which I think there is a lot of evidence in the
show), Nick couldn't bring himself to affirm. To do so would be a denial of
his religion; and he just couldn't bring himself to do that.
If he's that religious, then perjuring himself when he's sworn on
the bible might be something that he'd find very hard to do. It's one thing
to give a quick, easy lie; and then to repeat it simply because it's the
answer that everyone wants from him. But, in the courtroom, after taking
that oath, he's lying before his God.
Maybe that also factored into his decision to tell the truth?

If so, then there are three things going on. First, he takes the oath.
Second, he realizes the sun is coming closer, so he simply has to decide one
way or the other: there's no doubt that he wanted to get out of there
*pronto*. Third, he remembers (yet again) all the past, and the parallel
with the lies now. In the face of the urgency of the sun, he daren't dither
any longer. And, in the face of his oath, he can't bring himself to lie.
You think?

I don't know what Canadian practice is as to oaths for witnesses, but I just
finished my fourth stint as a jury member. This was in two different states, one
of them the very Bible-Belt South Carolina. Nobody swore on a Bible. In both
states the oath included "swear or affirm" and ended "so help you God." It made
a really good visual though, like the shot of him reaching toward the cross and
his hand bursting into flame in the Joan of Arc flashback from "For I Have
Sinned."

This has always been a favorite episode of mine.

McLisa, a bit hurried these days, but here.

Ger said at the Toronto Trek that he looked like a guppy in the flying
sequences! :) IMHO, he's right. Notice that the other two seasons only showed take
offs and landings, which according to Nigel at a con simply meant jumping down
from or onto a box which the audience couldn't see.

Found this on another list and it confused me a
moment. LOL
It finally dawned on me they were talking about the
character, Natalie on One Life to Live

Jeannie

Gnat obviously didn't want to be a Forensics person
all that bad.

One bad relationship and she changes her career
choice? Why couldn't she just have gone to work for
another police station or the coroner's office or
something?
