How long a life does a vampire tv show have? Blood Ties was okay with
a healthy dose of cheese in the mix. If you think about it we were
probably really lucky to have three seasons of Forever Knight.
In terms of longevity I might place it behind Angel, Buffy, and
Dark Shadows. A few of the recent (say in the past ten years)
attempts haven't lasted more than one season. Are there any shows I'm
forgetting, which outlasted Forever Knight?

Dark Shadows immediately jumped to mind.
Considering Forever Knight was cancelled several times and
resurrected, we are very lucky to have had three seasons.
Come to think of it, wasn't it cancelled each season? Or was that not
an issue after season 2? I didn't start watching until season 3 so
wasn't around the list until then.

I think it was only cancelled after season 2, there was about 2 years
between seasons 2 and 3. Then Tracy and Reese took over for Schanke and
Cohen.

Coming out of my crypt for a moment.
The show was aired in Fall of 1992. 13 episodes were first produced by CBS
in the US. CBS liked the show and had 9 more episodes taped and aired. This
first season was then canceled. The fans rallied and got the show back for
the 1994 season. This time a full season was aired. The series once again
was canceled . The 'fans' went on a big letter writing campaign and once
again the show was brought back for the 1996 season.
The show was then canceled once more: as to the reason, I'm not completely
sure. Low ratings was the rumor. But what can the broadcasting companies
expect when they aired the show at 1:30 in the morning. Forever Knight on
independent stations and , in my opinion, never reached it's
proper/interested
audience.
So if anyone ever says to you the fans don't make a difference, site the
efforts of the Fans of Forever Knight. We are a really great group
of people.

Actually, CBS didn't air the second season as I recall. It was
sold on a syndicated basis to whichever station wanted to air it. I
remember this as although I didn't watch it then, I had friends who
did, and seem to recall them talking about it

This time, the cable channel USA picked it up thus all the third
season changes. It was also sold on a syndicated basis. I'm sure of
that as I watched it on a non-USA station, then would watch it again
when it was aired on the cable USA channel.

Since it was aired on independent stations for 2nd and 3rd
seasons, local stations had control over when it aired. It didn't
show at 1:30 in the morning here. For the third season (and I think
the second) it aired at 10:30pm Saturdays where I live.
I suspect if it'd been airing on a major network for all three
seasons, it would've been cancelled sooner (although this, of course,
is a guess on my part). Networks tend to be less forgiving about
ratings.

Someone asked if low ratings were the reason for the cancellation of
FK in its final season. No, actually it was cancelled by USA, who
pulled their investment out, because the production company for
Highlander made doing so a condition of USA's getting Highlander in
repeats. I know this for a fact. When it happened I was sworn to
secrecy by my source. FK was running against Highlander in a lot of
markets and was making inroads. So USA caved. The only reason we got
the full season was because the German production company insisted on
the fulfilment of their contract. Notice how suddenly the script
quality went back up? That was because USA no longer was trying to
dumb it down so FK's own people were back in control. For example,
we no longer had things like LC running a strip contest with that
cheesy speech about getting in touch with oneself by getting naked.
Nigel Bennett tried to quit over that one, btw. He told me so himself
at a later convention. I am glad he didn't, but I couldn't have blamed
him if he had.
The irony, for those of us who knew what really happened, was the
suggestion that that same company should be approached about taking
over and producing FK! At the time we couldn't say anything. I
finally told the list several years later when the rumor got going
that it was the fault of Aaron Spelling, on behalf of Kindred: the
Embraced. Nope, A.S. had nothing to do with it.
We heard later, after the fans' third season campaign and the
listmembers who went to the Las Vegas convention where syndicated
shows are sold to local stations and programmers, that if FK had been
a show on one of the big three networks (this was before Fox), it
would definitely have been saved. We also know now that USA had
planned to push FK hard, just before Highlander's producers got into
the act. Ger had been supposed to come and do several days of
personal appearances in Las Vegas, and there was going to be lots of
FK merchandise there. The FK mugs are a good example.
