Mom & Dad - Computer - Ger in "Richard III" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2006 12:49:25 -0800 From: Knight Ranger <knightranger1228@y.......> Subject: Mom & Dad - Computer - Ger in "Richard III" I apologize for the cross-posting. I wanted to write and thank all of you for your sympathy and support. The last year and a half have been absolutely the most horrible time of my life. In July 2005, my Dad ended up in the hospital in Los Angeles. He was in the intensive care unit for 4 months. He was part of a new clinical drug trial and the drug that was supposed to help him ended up killing him. He died on November 7, 2005. I had been driving back and forth between San Francisco and L.A. (about 400 miles and 6 hours) all summer long. My Mom did not want to live alone, so I spent the month of December 2005 packing her up and moving her in with me. She lived with me for 2 months when, in March 2006, they discovered she had cancer during an exploratory surgery. We had just booked a 2 week trip to London and Paris the day before she went to the emergency room. Needless to say, the trip was cancelled. It was discovered that she had a very, very rare form of sarcoma and that the “specialist” that dealt with it worked in L.A. So, in April 2006, my Mom went down to stay with my sister in L.A. and get chemotherapy. Again, I spent the summer driving between S.F. and L.A. Then in July, while at work, I re-injured my bad knee and was laid up for six weeks. At the end of August, my Mom had a second surgery that removed most of the cancer tumor. With more chemo, the doctors said she would be all right. She was getting better and we were very hopeful. But, then she got an abscess infection and couldn’t recover. While fighting the infection, the very aggressive cancer started to grow again. She started getting weaker and weaker. I went down to L.A. on October 12, 2006 expecting to stay a week and then go back to S.F. I ended up taking a leave of absence from work and staying for 2 months. Most of that time was spent sleeping on a cot in my Mom's hospital room. Around my birthday (October 19th), the doctors said she only had days to a week to live. A week later, on October 27th, we put her in hospice care. She lived for 4 more weeks and died on November 28, 2006. Some of you have met my parents in the past. Either when Ger was in L.A. with “Gross Indecency” at the Music Center or in Santa Barbara for readings at the Lobrero Theatre. REST IN PEACE STEPHEN L. GRACE June 26, 1928 --- November 7, 2005 MARCIA M. GRACE August 10, 1933 --- November 28, 2006 I'm back at work and trying to go on, but its very, very hard. It will also take a lot of time. We are a very close family and I miss them both so much. The only good thing that happened in the last 1-1/2 years is that this summer I finally got a computer at home. No more staying late at work, working through lunch, running to the public library on my days off, or running to Kinko’s if the library was closed. I can now get online from my apartment. Reading through (and deleting most) of the thousands of emails dating back to July 2005 will definitely keep me busy and my mind off other things. And, because I need a break and have to get away for a while, in January I’m going to Washington, D.C. to see Ger in “Richard III”. Even though "Richard III" is not the best play for it, I know seeing Ger will cheer me up a little. I would love to meet up with other Ger/FK fans that are going to be in the area for the week of January 20-27, 2007.
