The rules are up to McLisa and Don. Not me. I was merely asked a long time ago
to post if I saw a possible problem and they didn't pop up. That is what I was
doing. I was thanked by McLisa for doing so.

If anyone has a problem with the rules, please take it OFF LIST to McLisa
and/or Don. Their contact information is in the rules posted every weekend.

Thank you.

Please bear with me, cos I'm on digest and I don't know if McLisa, Don, or
any of our guest listowners have chimed in on this yet...

Subject: Off topic posts

Personally, if given the choice, i'd rather read the off topic posts that
have to do with if vampires are real, than all the updates about the
dead/dying people, the well wishes meant only for them that go to the
list, and all those updates that Cheryl posts about her book and family.

But maybe that's just me?

--- end quote ---

I know, I'm breaking the four-line-per-quote rule, but in a situation like
this, I feel the original context must be preserved in its entirety.

Speaking as the founder of the list back in the day (December 9th will be
our /14th/ anniversary, imagine that!), the sole intent I had in creating
this place was that it fulfill two key elements: be as friendly as
possible to everyone who visited and to talk about FK. There has nearly
always, since day... like two or something, something really early, been a
list rule that general vampire postings were not on-topic and therefore
not really appropriate for the list. Let's face it, the world is littered
with tons and tons and tons of general vampire lists, MUDs, games, chat
rooms, LARPs, etc. etc. etc. There are so very few ones dedicated to
Forever Knight specifically. The idea behind 'it must relate to FK' is to
prevent the diluting of the list commentary into generic vampire mythos
and legends and everything else. The signal to noise of FK to non-FK is
integral to the existence and very /reason/ for the list. If the list was
allowed to evolve (I won't say devolve due to negative connotations) into
a general vampire list, then its unique place and niche in the internet is
gone forever.

As for the rest of it, I'm trying so hard to read it with a positive
'tone' because tone is hard to convey in a text medium, but the wording
makes it very hard to accomplish. When I first read this note, I was
shocked. One of the things this list is that I never intended it to be is
a place for people to give a damn about one another. While I'm personally
not a praying person, I have /zero/ objections to the current
administration's decision to allow prayer/thought requests, because while
they're not related to the show directly, they're about the people who
make up this list and their families. People I've met in real life
that I wouldn't have met otherwise. People who are my friends. People
who could very well be family by choice. People I care about, even if
I'm really pathetic about writing them to tell them thank you for being
in my life.

If someone doesn't want to read about those posts, that's fine, the delete
key's not hard to find. However, I'll offer some polite advice. Please
be more sensitive to the feelings of your fellow listmembers in the
future. I can only imagine what's going through the heads of those who
have the unfortunate reason to post a prayer request and I sincerely hope
I was the only one who was upset by the apparent tone of that part of this
post.

As for the well-wishes, everyone's missed 'reply-to-sender' versus
'reply-all' at least once or twice in their lives, so I think people can
be excused for not being so anal as to check every single time. Mistakes
happen, and often people here are kind enough to apologize for the error.

As for Cheryl and her book and her family... I'm not sure why she was
singled out, but I'd suggest it wasn't entirely polite and would recommend
not doing that again.

There are other lists and forums out there where people can discuss
general vampire stuff, where people can hate each other and post snide
things about each other, where people get flamed for being successful.

This is not and will never be such a place.

Thank goodness for that.

No, Jean, you were NOT the only one, and I'm glad you spoke up. I was
planning to keep my big mouth shut so as not to add fuel to a
potential (illegal by the list rules) flame war, but I feel compelled
now to back you up in this.

Amen, and thank you for speaking up and voicing what I was feeling,
and probably many others on the list as well. While I don't mind the
occasional off-topic post about vampires in general, it *is* a list
rule that we not stray there. I *do* like updates on what the list
family is doing, and those we have lost. One of my dear friends and a
listsib (Mary Lou Manzie) was one of those recently deceased.

I've always considered FORKNI-L like a family, and want to see it
remain that way. I also enjoy hearing about FK, about the actors and
their continuing roles, and anything else even remotely related to
our favorite show. And now that we've finally attained the Season 3
DVDs, long may FK and this list live! Happy 14th Anniversary (almost)!!!

Hugs,
Nat

She was singled out because she posts a lot of updates about the problems in
her life. Prayers are one thing, but why can't the 20 million updates go
privately to the people who want them? Not to mention the off topic posts
she makes and says 'hopefully with permission.' And those private e-mails
that go to the list. But she doesn't get a public flogging like other
people---someone has to speak up about this. It's unfair. I think the
rules and public floggings should be distributed equally.

And let me clarify this for everyone again since some people have forgotten
since the last time this was brought up: People on digest receive
everything, meaning delete isn't an option.

These attacks and negative posts WILL stop immediately as per the rules.

Any further replies to these topics should go directly to McLisa or Don:

  mclisa@m.......

  argent@c.......

One of them will be popping up to post the rules, probably later today. I
highly recommend EVERYONE re-read them and refresh your memories. I'm also sure
they will have a few things to say to the list.

I agree. And I just want to remind folks on the list who, for
whatever reason, have no desire to read about other listmembers'
personal situations that receiving posts with the PRAYER header is
entirely optional; like the WAR header, it can be turned on and off
at will. Listgardener Don has clear instructions on how to do this on
his list-maintenance webpage:
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7139/fk-lists.htm.

For my part, I've always been amazed and pleased at how nonjudgmental
and supportive this fandom is, especially after getting into a second
fandom and finding the wank level there to be perfectly well
obnoxious. I applaud our listowners and maintainers for many years of
diligent work that has kept this list--and by extension, to a large
extent, this fandom--a delightful place to be.

Jeanster, I just wanted to pop up to give you a great big THANK YOU! I was
there back in the day, when you invited us all to come play in your sandbox,
and I may not have been active on the list for a big chunk of those 14
years, but I've been receiving the messages pretty much nonstop since. It's
been wonderful to see that at least *one* of my favorite cancelled TV shows
still has an active, happy fandom, and I think you had a lot to do with
that, probably more than you'll ever know or accept credit for!

I agree; outside of growing up with classic horror flicks, Fk was a huge
influence on me and so are my friends. I would have NEVER made it this far
if it weren't for all of the influence. I just signed two contracts, one for
Angus Grady; Spirit of Arachula and another contract for Nathan: The Chosen.
Two different publishers. Kristen, dying to see your novel. Thanks alot for
your kind words.

My opinion only: I truly believe they do or did exist at one point; you
become a vampire by sharing the bloodline, a simple feeding can't change
your blood you need to add the vampire to yours inorder for it to change.

Rule number one on this list is, and always will be, no flames. We
play nice with each other. We are considerate and caring of each
other.

This list is for discussion related to Forever Knight and the Forever
Knight community. That community includes the cast and crew of the
show, the members of this list, and to a lesser extent the larger FK
fan community. Posts relating to the activities of list members are
on topic. News about the loss of one of our community, while never
welcome, are on topic.

We instituted the PRAYER: topic so list members who do not wish to
receive such requests can opt out. If you choose to receive the list
in DIGEST mode you must accept the corollary that you cannot use the
filtering options offered by the various topics headers available.
It's your choice.

Discussion of vampires in general is off topic unless you relate in
some way to Forever Knight. That isn't difficult to do. Just contrast
or compare what you have to say with how it is for vampires in the FK
universe, and you're in business.

If you have any questions, complaints, or debate about this - please
contact me and/or lisa off list.
