When I first started watching FK my favs were Lacroix and Natalie.

And then I started writing fanfic and slowly my list changed. Tracy
jumped to the top of the list, then Lacroix, Screed, Urs, Miklos, the
Inca. I like the little characters I get to play with the most <g>
Then, somewhere along the way Lacroix all but fell of the list.

FK is a good ensemble show---the characters mesh with and play off of
each other so well it's hard to choose any single character as my
favorite.

But, since we're choosing, my favorites have to be Nick and Lacroix.
Both are complex in different ways. Nick is a flawed hero---his faults
and failings make him interesting where a purely noble character is
boring and predictable.

You could say that Lacroix is Nick's mirror image---a flawed villain
laced with a streak of the hero, so while he's deliciously dark, he
has moments of nobility and goodness that life him out of the realm of
cartoon bad guy.

How so?

Since vampires aren't aerodynamic and don't fly in any manner that can
be explained by physics, their ability to fly has to be metaphysical
in nature. They presumably could fly at any altitude because they
don't need to breathe (was that ever stated in canon, or is that a
fanfic convention?), although the extreme cold of the higher altitudes
would result in their freezing and suffering tissue damage (Nick with
freezer burn? Ewww!).

 I guess I

Hang gliders and gliders are quite slow (hang gliders are airborne at
20 mph; gliders fly at speeds averaging 35 mph). Since we see Nick
blur into invisibility by moving too fast for the eye to follow,
presumably at those moments he is moving considerably faster than
35-150 mph. Whether or not a vampire can maintain high velocity for
any length of time is debatable, although we have the evidence of
Divia's ability to fly from Egypt to Toronto while carrying a corpse
in one night.

Of course, this brings up a related problem---even if a vampire can
maintain supersonic flight, the friction of a non-aerodynamic body
moving through air (even the thin air in the stratosphere) would burn
off clothing, hair, and turn your speeding vampire into a very
fast-moving overdone potato chip. And then there's the sonic
booms---when they accelerate past the sound barrier they'd produce a
lot of noise and leave a sonic trail across the countryside. (Having
grown up when supersonic flight over populated areas was permitted, I
can attest to how noisy and china-rattling sonic booms are.)

So, since we do not see burned, naked vampires or hear sonic booms in
Ontario, we can only conclude that the metaphysical aspect of vampire
flight includes pretection from the consequences of the laws of
physics. Perhaps vampire flight is more akin to teleportation when
they want to go somewhere fast (think, "I want to be...HERE!" and they
are), and simple levitation when they want to take the scenic route
across Toronto while carrying dying psychics and arrive with only
slightly mussed hair.

Hmmmmm...
Honestly it depends on my mood. Usually it is Nick because despite
all the angst, he is quite a dynamic character. He can he high and
low (and we all know about the lows)
I waiver between Janette and Nat again with my mood. Lacroix, it
depends too. <see a pattern here>

I guess I am glad that it was truly an ensemble show, because
everyone had a part to play. Yes Nick was the lead role, but he had
to work off other characters for his character play correctly.

I guess that is why I am a Die Hard with other tendencies. <g>

The flawed hero and the flawed villain... very well put, Nancy. And of course,
the fact that neither of them are perfect at what they're trying to do make
them all the more perfect for the show <g>.
Other than Nick, I'd have to say I'm equally split between Schanke and
LaCroix, for obviously divergent reasons. Schanke is someone I would just plain get
along with, he reminds me of my closest friends-- friendly, open, a bit goofy,
and insanely loyal and good-hearted. Which is kind of funny, because I started
by watching the third season, and when I saw Dark Knight, my reaction was
"Where's Tracy? And who the heck is this clown?"
LaCroix appeals to my more intellectual side, besides being wonderfully dark
and gleefully evil. He's extremely complex, which makes him fun, tho
difficult, to write, and his intelligence and very deliberate manner offset the more
'gut reaction' tendencies both Nick and Nat display. And besides, if I could get
a garentee he wouldn't kill me, I'd love to have the chance to sit and debate
with him for a while. A good, no-holds-barred, take-nothing-personally debate
is hard to find.
Which brings me to another question, which I guess isn't off topic if we use
FK charecters to discuss it: why is it that evil seems to be more
intellectually challenging than good? At least, it seems that way in fiction.

I would say because evil is more (for lack of a better word)
complicated.
Good, ususally but not always, tends to have a clearer reason or
result. Nick is trying to be good in order to regain is lost
mortality. That basicall it. No questions there.
But, if we look at Lacroix. We see is sadisticness and wonder where
it comes from. Yes, he has the brutality of a Roman general and
supposedly he was abused by his father, but why does he hold onto it
for 2000 years? And why does he seem to focus so much of is rage on
Nick?
It is more interesting to contemplate all of the facets of this
taboo. Because that's what evil is in today's society. We all have
the capability of evil inside of us, but we are taught to supress it.
So when a person real or fiction does not supress it, we are drawn
to that person. Look at someone like Hitler, or more recently Osaama
Bin Ladin. The news is filled with stories about him. Why is he
carrying out these acts? What will he do next?
I think society is intrigued by evil.

I now have a domain name! http://knightwind1228.com

For anyone who has the archives bookmarked as
knightwind1228.tripod.com/forkni.htm, that will still work, but now you
can use http://knightwind1228.com/forkni.htm . However, if you have my
main site bookmarked or linked to as knightwind1228.tripod.com/home.htm,
please change that to http://knightwind1228.com . There is still a
"home.htm" page there, but it's now an announcement page with a town crier
to send you in the right direction, and it won't be there forever.

What's new? New page banners, button navigation at the top or left
side, with text links at the bottom for those who have graphics disabled
or who don't want to scroll back up to the top. There's a graphic for
those who wish to link to me using one, and the story of how I found
Forever Knight. There's also a brand new guest book, linked on my home
page.

I've also added a links page. A word about this: it's very much a
fledgling page, with an obvious N&NPacker bias <g>. I do plan to include
a wider range of links at some time in the near future.

Forkni-l has been split into two pages, the main page and the dusty
vaults. The main page is from 2001 to the present, and 2000 (Jul.-Dec.)
has been moved to the vaults. This brings me to the important news.

Some time ago, list member Stephen Fellows sent me some weekly digests
from 1996--the first two weeks of April and all of May and June. He
also sent me the monthly (!) digests of Fkspoilr for May and June 1996.
All of these, in time, will be found on the vaults page.

I wasn't on the list in 1996, so I was rather stunned at the volume of
list traffic. These digests were far too long to read all at once, so
I've broken them down into easier-to-read segments and added topic lists.

The first two weeks of April and the first week of May are ready for your
reading pleasure. All fifty-one--count 'em, 51!-- parts. A big "thank
you" to Stephen!

I relate the most to Natalie on a lot of different
levels, but of course Nick would have to be my
ultimately favorite character.

Secondary would be Schanke, Janette and LaCroix.

LaCroix is sort of like how I feel about a poisonous
snake: beautiful, fascinating and deadly if crossed.

Subject: Why do evil characters intrigue us (Like LC)

Why are we so fascinated with vampires in general?
(Granted, this is an assumption that many if not most
of us like the vampire genre outside of FK. If you
don't fall in that category, my apologies.)

I hang out occasionally with the local goth crowd, and
there are a lot of dark, broody, insecure and/or
depressed people in that crowd. However, they revel in
exploring the "dark" side of humanity. Things that
make us angry, depressed, a little insane. There is
also a lot to be said for learning to embrace and
"use" pain - both emotional and physical - to express
oneself.

A lot of people flirt with these negative elements
because they are taboo, just as "vampires" embody
things that appeal to us...sensuous, forbidden,
dangerous elements of society. Untouchable criminals
that can offer us the chance to attain dark
immortality (with a correspondingly high price.)

If I look at LC, I see the quintessential embodiment
of evil, but with a proven capacity to love deeply
(most notably Fleur in BMV and Nick throughout the
series.)
