How so? Since vampires aren't aerodynamic and don't fly in any manner that can be explained by physics, their ability to fly has to be metaphysical in nature. They presumably could fly at any altitude because they don't need to breathe (was that ever stated in canon, or is that a fanfic convention?), although the extreme cold of the higher altitudes would result in their freezing and being injured (Nick with freezer burn? Ewww!). I guess I > always sort of figured they could fly, in general, as > fast as something like a glider/hang glider and go > faster than a car. In one of my fics, I had vampires > able to fly from Seattle to Portland, OR in an hour or > so, and it is a 3.5 hour car/train ride, which puts > them at about 150MPH. Hang gliders and gliders are quite slow (hang gliders are airborne at 20 mph; gliders fly at speeds averaging 35 mph). Since we see Nick blur into invisibility by moving too fast for the eye to follow, presumably at those moments he is moving considerably faster than 35--150 mph. Whether or not a vampire can maintain high velocity for any length of time is debatable, although we have the evidence of Divia's ability to fly from Egypt to Toronto while carrying a corpse in one night. Of course, this brings up a related problem---even if a vampire can maintain supersonic flight, the friction of a non-aerodynamic body moving through air (even the thin air in the stratosphere) would burn off clothing, hair, and turn your speeding vampire into a very fast-moving overdone potato chip. And then there's the sonic booms---when they accelerate past the sound barrier they'd produce a lot of noise and leave a sonic trail across the countryside. So, since we do not see burned, naked vampires or hear sonic booms across Ontario, we can only conclude that the metaphysical aspect of vampire flight includes pretection from the consequences of the laws of physics. Perhaps vampire flight is more akin to teleportation when they want to go somewhere fast (think, "I want to be...HERE!" and they are), and simple levitation when they want to take the scenic route across Toronto while carrying dying psychics and arrive with only slightly mussed hair. He's not mine, and not a lot of fan's favorite - although that's nothing against Nick as I love all the characters. Everyone character has his or her fans just like with any television show or movie. My favorites, in order, are Screed and LaCroix. Say, this could be a fun topic!<g> Does anyone else count favorite characters other than the main ones? FK has such wonderful characters that I don't think it is unusual for some fans to have favorites that perhaps even appeared just in one episode. --Libs Cheryl <fknight420@c.......> wrote: I realize that, Angus has suffered alot, in a way still does, my feeling about LaCroix being hurt was a personal one. The others go in cylcles and it really depends on which season, which episoded I am watching. There is an occasional playfulness about Nick in the first and second seasons that is just delightful. Natalie too, had some great moments in the first two seasons, of strength, humor, sarcasm. So there are times when I really like them both. I really like Nick in the third season when he is unsure of himself, like in "Night in Question" and "Sons of Belial". I really liked Stonetree, but there are things I liked about Cohen and Reese too. I think it's cool that FK people who were minorities as captain all three seasons. And I gotta love Schanke, even when he's annoying. He just grew on me. <g> Laurie of the Isles <Laudon1228@y.......> http://1-mad-squirrel.livejournal.com/ "Never meddle in the affairs of vampires, for you are a walking juice box and would fit nicely in Nick's trunk." - me ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2006 23:14:00 +0800 From: eruve erundun <eruveerundun@y........HK> Subject: Re: Fav Characters? was Re: Episode discussion: For I Have Sinned-- new question Not necessarily in this order (too hard to decide!): Nick, Nat, Don, Jeanette, LaCroix, Grace, Cohen, Stonetree, Reese, Divia 'Fraid Vachon, Urs, Screed and Tracy never quite grew on me. But I love all of the rest of the characters as well. Each character and the person portraying him/her/it<G> brought a different and unique element to the show that we all love. It wouldn't be FK without them! Terri eowyn23@j.......
