Two thoughts come to mind about why he even approached
the Confessional.
1) He was gloating
2) Some deep seated guilt that he hadn't identified
consciously.
It is often true that criminals "want" to be caught.
Given the tone of the scene, it's a tough call,
although I lean slightly more toward "gloating".
Hmmm. I feel a fiction coming on about the killer...

I gave Susan Field the heads up about 2 months ago that season 3 was in the
works (although I didn't know an exact date yet), but she still felt like
the ad was a good idea, particularly to thank them and ask for new movies.

Actually mag with the ad goes on the stands in August, The issue has an on
sale date of Aug 15th
well in advance of the October release... so its a nice way for the fans to
thank TPTB for the three seasons on DVD...

A third one could be . He wanted to torture a priest. How terrible it
would be for a priest to have someone come and confess to murder then tell
him he's going to do it again knowing that he can't report it without
betraying his whole life's work and everything he believes in.

It is also a GREAT way to increase interest in the 3rd season DVDs. A lot of
fans who are not on this and other FK lists may contact TPTB asking about 3rd
season DVDs, and when they find out they are on their way, pre-order them.
The ad could boost sales which is really a good thing ;-)

I don't know that I would agree it was "torture". I
got the impression that the killer was truly a pious
man who thought he was doing "good" in some twisted
way, and I think he held respect for the priesthood,
although he might have been frustrated that the church
wasn't "able" to cleanse itself.
